What needs to be done? The local dealer said it was a 2 day deal. Things like change fork oil, pull swing arm, hata hata. Wants big $$$.

They replace all replacable fluids.
Check for play in the neck bearings.
Adjust primary chain.
I think they check for the frame alignment.

It shouldn't take two days. It sounds like they are using your bike a a training exercise.
Try a different dealer.

at 20k the neck bearings should actually be removed and inspected, not just checking the play and adjusted..... that should be done every 5k...on a 20k serv, i would prolly spend the better part of a day.... but definatly not 2 days

My '01 x1 is coming up on 14k i think I will do 15k early, and check the oil pump. any other trouble areas you can think of?
I adjusted the P-chain early as I had to replace the gasket, shifter bolt kept getting loose(leak)
the FSM has ya taking the bike apart to check simple stuff, I would like some tips if you would not mind. the Isolators look ok, swing arm and neck bearings?, what a bout wheel bearings?

basicaly wheel bearings are sealed. just jack the bike up and spin the wheels and look and more importantly listen for anything unusual..... grinding, etc...

i was told the extra time (and money) for my 20K service went mostly to the forks... they need to pull them off and use them like pogo sticks to bounce around the shop... or something. i figure they know what they're doing, so i just pay them and eat ramen for the rest of the month.

yes at 20k the fork oil is to be changed... which requires removing and disassembeling (sp)

Speaking of service intervals and such.
I'm purchasing a 99 X1 with under 1000 mi.
1. What are the regular service intervals?
2. B/C it is that old (even thought the mileage is low) should I be checking something that would normally be done in one of the later services?

2 days is reasonable in a busy shop -- it's not 16 hours of actual work, but two days elapsed ain't unreasonable

The swingarm is removed to adjust and repack the swingarm bearings at the 20k service. It's not a simple procedure. The mechanics are probably finding ways to beat the book time, though.
