there's nothing wrong with mine...just a question. When and why did HD stop using removable tappet blocks? Do you hafta junk your cases if the holes wear? |

no you dont have to junk the cases, but you do have to tear down your motor and have the tappet guides in the cases over bored and purchase oversized tappets to repair them.. hope this helps.. |

Thought it was something like that...what is the advantage to no blocks? |

harley dosent have to make the blocks,, and then put them in the engine.. less parts ,, less cost, already had to bore the holes for the blocks any ways.. they last a while too. by the time they go bad,, its your problem not theirs..besides usually if they fail its because some thing else did first. some thing wipes out the tappet bearing, it wipes out the cam lobe. the extra pressure wipes out the bore in the case.. hope it makes sence.. |

Speaking of tappets... I aquired a ratt-a-tat-tat sound in my '98 S-1's motor; tappets and pushrods were in order. All apart and ready to put back together but the new tappets look nothing like the old ones. The oil holes are in the wrong place. I ordered part #18526-89 and that's just what the box says but does anyone know if the part number is superceded by a new one? |

i replaced my stock ones with cranes after hearing some horror stories about stock failure. probably just a waste but the oil holes didnt line up exactly where the ones on the stock ones did. other that that they were pretty much the same though, they have worked fine for me for several thousand miles.. dont know if it really helps but? aaomy |

Actually it does.... It turned out that the tappets for my bike were superceded by part number #18526-89A. The difference being just what you said, the oil passages not lining up as the original ones did. I had the tappets oriented with the holes facing the wrong direction so the tappets wouldn't pump up at idle. I just turned'em around and voila!, no more tappy-tappy |
