ok, ok, im willing to admit it i have no life.. ok actually i have no life and like to change things that i dont think are quite right..or could be better.. so heres the deal.. most people think that the s2 air cleaner backing plate is some what less than desirable,, the s2 came with two different style backing plates. a early one and a late one. the early is a greenish, fiberglass, thin plate, top in the picture,, the second or latter version was a black " molded" could have been vacuum formed much thicker plate. made of a slightly softer plastic.. the problem with both these designs is that they flex and the black ones crack allowing unfiltered air into the carb. personally i always thought it was kinda cheese too. the other issue is removing the breather lines from the carb if you have a s2 and wish to fix this problem NHRS offers a beautiful backing plate thicker filter elements to boot. a beautiful piece as attested to by many a bad webbers. i throw the old 4 jaw on the lathe and square up the block and start cutting the back. this is how the back of her is going to look. it also gives a nice place to grip while machining the rest of her.

now that i have the back ready i put a three jaw chuck on the lathe and mount the piece up, its starting to take shape here. i start boring out the inside to the proper diameter. then i start taking passes at an angle. and then well ,, lets just say ive always been good with an etch o sketch.. and yes this is all hand crank. no cnc, not even a dro on this old crate. |

One of these days I'm gonna get me a BIG block of 6061 (about 3' X 5' X 8') and take it to Aaron and have him mill me out a MOTORSICKLE! Prettier metal work is NOT to be found anywhere! Dude - YOU ROCK! AL |

thanks guys,, it help knowing its appreciated or at least liked,, oldog,,, honduras?? hows the job?? man i loved that crazy frog thing,, should have seen me on my way to work this morning and on the way home,,Ding Ding,, if ya see any good women who like motorcycles mail me one ok!! dont know weather it would be better to have her speak english or not!!!!!Bong Bong,,, was noticing that the front on my buell kinda looks like the chase bike in that. lefty,, 3'x5'x8'.. man thats a big bike...im definitely gonna need help cleaning up the chips from that one!!! ok so here are some on the crab pictures... i kinda wanted to intimidate my shop vack you know something that looks like i could suck in small children,, at the beginning of the year i started running the bike with a dynojet thunderslide kit.. unfortunately the results were less than desirable,, think the slide was actually opening too fast. since, i have gone back to a modded previous set up. my current carb is set up is a stock slid with front radiused and vacuum port opened to about .116 a #48 pilot a 190 main a emulsion tube from keihin racing, and a nokh needle spacered up .0625. and the thunderslide accelerator pump spray jet. |

Aaron: LOL the frog is prolly from here!, 125 2strokes every where, this a.m. waiting for Oscar, saw a woman in a dress riding no gear side saddle behind her 'ol man Ding ding! Gorgeous women every where, sumthin in the water, would give us the trots. The local police ride 250 4 stroke dirt bikes, army in cars/trucks. I would go out roaming but 1. no habla, 2. was told by customer not to leave the hotel except with driver from co. (banditos) Bam Bam Are you going to fit a contoured plug of some kind over the screw heads? I wonder if the other Aaron ever played with any thing like this?, I would like to see a dyno comparison with & with out its worth 5CP (cool power) You still riding the dirt bike to work? baug baug |

hell oldog,, i ride everything to work,, today was the buell,, tomorrow will probably be the 62, and if the weather stays nice then probably the 125,, ding ding,, wish i had one of my 500 two stroke on the road.. kinda missing the sound of the rabbid chain saw right now,, Bawwwww.. i should really look into dealer plates or something!! your plug question,, not on a street versions,, but if i were ever going to take her to a track that wouldnt be the only thing getting filled and smoothed.. ok now that i have that part done,, time to start on the backing plate,, the backing plate is made of .120 thick al plate. and yes its supposed to have the hump at the top. it goes with my choice of filter i wanted to use a 2" filter so i got a 2" k&n for a old FL. the lower part has a molded hump in it. dont know why ,, just does!!

and now for the next stage. on the stock s2 filter a couple other things bothered me. one the filter always shifted on the older backing plate, the second version tried to correct this by installing a raised step to keep the filter centered. the other thing i never liked was the fact the one mounting screw was basically in the carb mouth. a big post interrupting flow. i started with another al plate .120 thick added my mounting holes and used 1/2" al posts to set the height on the top plate. this top plate is a guide for the air filter and allows me to move the post away from the mouth of the carb but still use my stock cover. i set the top plate so when assembled it matches the internal top of the filter media. thought this might help smooth air flow as its drawn threw the filter.

so now shes pretty much done,, just one more little addition i wanted to play with.. a cone to help control carb velocity and help resolve the small low pressure pocket that forms just above the carb mouth.. so back to the lathe and my etch o sketch fun,, hey if all else fails i can always get a job designing bras fro madonna! now she gets bolted to the top plate in the center of the intake. voilla

Way Cool! where did you find out about the low pressure area, would you think that it would exist in the mouth of a throttle body on a fuellie? |

no problem,,,, ok so now all thats left is the install.. the blue is a sealant,, i want this to suck,, just in the right way!!! and with any carb parts make sure you use locktite or some sort of thread locker.. dont want bolts sucked threw your engine.. and that folks concludes todays broadcast..... |

that is outstanding........ just wondering why you chose to keep the angle rather than laying it flat like the race air cleaner? |

wow! low pressure area exists due to the fac that the carb (or throttle body) is er, ehem, sucking, yes? creating a low pressure area, which acuses air to rush in through the carb (t-body), mix with the sacred fluid in hopefull appropraite portions, explode, and push to forward -- good fun yep, same condition on carbos and fuelies, both hey AA! how'zabout posting this stuff in the KV, so it'll last longer -- just a suggestion, as it'd be a shame to loose this stuff (Message edited by bomber on August 11, 2005) |

AA, dude, I bow to your manual machining prowess. Excellent work. I haven't turned cranks and pulled levers much in the past 15 years(and don't really want to, I've got a shopload of CNCs), but you do some very good work. And I think I figgered out why 6061 is skyrocketing in price these days. YOU'RE USING IT ALL!

"...don't want bolts sucked through your engine" I can vouch for that one! To quote Mr. Canfield - "remind me to tell you sometime!" Aaron - I'd gladly sweep up your chips up all day to watch you 'etch-a-sketch' on that lathe and mill for an hour or so! Nice work! Thanks for posting this stuff! keep it up! Bombers' got a good suggestion - this needs to be in KV too, so as not to have it relegated to archives. AL |
