Well, in five months I wore out the back tire on my X1. (That sure was fun!) I still had the stock Dunlop 204 on there from when I bought the bike. My front still has a lot of tread on the Dunlop 204. Dunlop no longer makes the 204's. I'm planning on getting a 208 series for the rear. Are there any problems with replacing just the rear or am I asking for trouble doing that?

you'll probably get opinions on both sides of the fence, tire manufacturers will tell you change both at same time but they may have ulterior motives. i am by no means an expert, however for the 15+ years i have been riding i have never changed both tires at the same time and never had any problems no matter what bike it was, including my cyclone! i have always bought a tire closest to what was on there in retrospect...

depends on how you plan to take those corners. if you are really gonna be burning the edges then stay with the same brand and type. youll have a more consistent breaking point and slide ratio. if i have to miss match i always try to run a lesser rear with a better front. that way the rear breaks free first, more like a power slide. if you are just doing normal riding and slightly heavy cornering them it really dosent matter. right now on the bike i have a 208 front and a 205 rear. i will still hard corner with it but feel a little more stability with my other (208 rear set up) on the bike. but thats just me

Factory standard was D207.
I have always replaced the tires one at a time as they wear out. I haven't had any issues but I don't push it very hard.
I am currently running D205 in the rear and it feels great.
I had a D208 on the rear before and that will drop you on your A55 when it's cold but when it warms up, you can use it like a post-it note : )

My Cyclone came with D205's. I went through 2 sets of those. I switched to the D220's, a better tire in my opinion.
I went throught 2 rears for each front.

However, I'm switching to the Bridgestone BT010's and 020's.
I put the Bridgestones on my S2 and they TOTALLY changed the character of the bike.

The 20's are sticker than the 10's, I put a 20 on the front and a 10 on the back.
Very nice combination.

What the ...???!?!!?
The tires WEAR at different rates, so change them at different rates!
anyone who tells you to change them at the same time is full of it, man.
Sometimes, if you're doing alot of twisties, your front will 'peak out' quickly and dictate a change. other times, maybe doing a lot of straight running and sliding, your rear will wear faster.
two different tires, two different jobs (1 drives, 1 steers) 2 different attitudes,
two different service intervals.

Okay, think I'll just change the rear then.

Next question is what Dunlop tire is closest to a 204? It sounds like it may be a bad idea to put a stickier tire on the rear than the front, so any suggestions? I want to stick with Dunlops.

Hey I stick witht eh D208s...as nate said, when cold..they are slick...

I keep running the same ones, so I just change which ever one is worn..no stress there...

Again, depends on yoru riding style....

The 220 replaced the 205, which replaced the 204.

I'd stick with the size recommended by Dunlop for your 5" wide wheel - 170/60.

delta -- your front will tell you when it's time to change -- visually, you'll be able to see cupping on the tread -- tactically, it won't feel as planted as it used ta was -- replace as needed

If you were happy with the 204, you will really be happy with the 200.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I ended up picking up a new Dunlop 205 for the rear for only $85. I couldn't pass up that deal. That way I figure the compound won't be much different than the 204 on the front. Maybe by the time I wear out the new rear, the front will be ready to change too.
