My 98 s1w has this very odd noise in the motor,.Im not sure if its valve train wristpin noise or rod noise at the crank or a bearing ,,cam ,,.It seems to eminate from all over not just one spot and its a rotational noise that only rotates lets say 3 times to the cranks 7 times ,,Im trying to get a lead before having to tear it down and splitting the cases! I realize that basically this a noise better heard audibly ,,but I thought i could at least attempt to see if anyone has had similar problems! Any insight good or bad would be appreciated! Take a big, long screwdriver and, pressing the end of the handle to your ear, put the tip on various locations on the engine to pinpoint the location of the noise. You'll be absolutely amazed at what you can hear through a simple screwdriver. It's like a mechanics stethescope. I had a very similar noise, but I don't want to sway your diagnosis by telling you what caused it (yet). That 3 to 7 ratio of noise to crank rotation leads me to believe you should audio-inspect the cam case first. |

Must be some karmic thing, mine was idling very slow this morning, like 800 rpm instead of like 1050, very slow and lumpy. When I gave it throttle it would buck a little first like the vacuum dropped (rose) to zero then take off, otherwise it ran normal and strong. A first that I hope heals itself. Good idea with the screwdriver! I will remember that one. |

'valvetrain wristpin noise'??!?!?!? relax, check your oil level, don't get obsessed with splitting acses just yet. 9 outta 10 times it's VERY minor. stop trying to pinpoint a diagnosis ("3 times to every 7 of the crank"...How do you figure that out?) and just check the obvious. you'd be shocked about hwo much valvetrain noise bad gas can give you. |

I used that Screwdriver idea on my cars alternator a while back, cause i thought the bearings were shot.. sure enough they were. You could hear the grinding from the bloody screwdriver.. but you must make sure it is a good one.. I noticed my wooden handle ones work 10 times better than plastic or rubber handled. Just FYI... |

Listen to Tramp, use KISS (keep it simple, stupid). Simple things first. On a recent ride, I had a clacking noise on deceleration. thought sure it was slack in the primary chain. Turned out to be a bracket for the muffler vibrating because a spring had broken. Look intensely for the simple things first, then proceed to more critical ones. About 50% of the times its something easy. |

I can't tell you how many times the clanging of my (ever-shifting) kickstand against my swingwarm has caused me to consider conrod inspection..... |
