Like blue jeans, a t-shirt and black boots, the tubers will always have a place in motorcycling and I'll do my part by keeping my 98 S1W and 97 S1 (well, hers) on the road!

XB's are great bikes but they lack one thing...TRUE GRIT.... Almost In a way that Clint Eastwood will never be a better cowboy then John Wayne.

makes me wonder what the folks will be saying in 5-10-15 years . . . . .

yeah, that new ZC Buell is great! more comfortable, better handling, that carbon fibre frame is aces, and the 145 rwhp is wonderful, but it just ain't got the soul of the old XB series . . . now THERE was a bike . .. . . why, one time, lemme tell ya, get me a beer there youngster, there I was . . . . Outdated Maybe

Replaceable probably

We just added an 02 S3T to our stable, over the Vstrom and GS 1150

Saved a bundle, besides it uses the same belt, pulleys, brake parts, plugs, FI parts as the 2 X1s in the fleet.

Looking for a 02 X1W to add later in the season.

Ride then like they were meant to be ridden

Out dated I think not!
when did the sr71 become out dated & passe?
when did the XB70 become out dated & passe?
when did the '60's camaros the fire birds or the mustangs become out dated and passe?
when did the RR,RS,RSS,s1,s2,s3,x1 become any thing other than classic?

Each of the above is a statement, about genious, talent, excellence, innovation, or just fun.
Each is in some way a milestone, unique, or desirable. Did their creators stop when these machines were built or did they continue to persue the call of excellence?

How many of you know any thing about Clarence "Kelly" Johnson? He is associated with the ww2 piston engine fighter p38 "Lightning" this is just one of his designs, U2, Sr71 are part of his handy work. One of his mottos was that if it does not exist we invent it The group he founded also created the F117

Buell Motors? why thats Hd's Skunk works
As for Us "tuber" owners why we own a small piece of history, Think of it as a book mark

Hotrod, if that's the X1 with the blue header. I know where there's a new, un-sold one in a dealers basement.

Dawg -- Kelly's one of my personal and professional heroes! the man's approach to life, and "work" (is it work if you love it?) is an inspiration, to me at least . . . .

I attended a talk given by his number 2 guy (whose name is lodged just behind the set list of the last Quicksilver Messanger Service gig I saw, sadly) -- he was speaking about building a hi-perf work group -- he said, in the mid seventies, that when he needed to expand his group, he'd go out the the parking lot at quitting time, and find the folks that drove pickups and motorcycles, and approach them first -- makes ya proud, yes?

Bombero:
Just what little I have learned about about him has astounded me, I know nothing of the areas out side of his historical significance relating to aircraft, There are some thing like 5 or 6 significant aircraft, piston and jet to his credit. those are the only ones I am sure of.

Some intersting parallels with BMC came to mind, hence the comments above.

also like our "rouge" scholar Tramp points out, >> his smile's not outdated<<
Well said my friend ......

people often point out the cracks in my front fender (which I found alongside the Bear Mtn. Pkwy) and tell me I should repair 'em.
My answer is always that my a*s has a big crack in it, and it works jess fine....

"I think he would disagree with you."

That was the line Robert Duvall uttered to John Wayne in "True Grit". He did disagree with him.

A couple centuries ago I was in boot camp at MCRD and one of the Jr. Drill instructors (SSGT Grimes) come into the squad bay w/ a P38 in his hand. He called all of us recruits up to the classroom and then started shaking that little can-opener in our faces. "Just for your information, recruits ", he said. "This item is no longer known as the John Wayne, since the Duke died last night. From now on it's known as the Clint Eastwood."

So now there's 80 ex-marines running around this world who call the P38 a Clint Eastwood.

When XBs first came out, the tubers were quickly overlooked by the flashier younger siblings, but now I find that when Brankin and I are riding on our tubers into a bike infested area, that they now get equal billing. As time passes, they we become, more and more a novelty.

Tubers are as outdated as Americana.

Hotrod, it's in Grand Rapids, MI. Wild Boar H-D. Check H-D's website for dealers near zip 49331 and they are actually the one located in Hudsonville, the one in G.R. is just a clothes store now.
