So today I looked at the new bikes and thought, "that new Ulysses is pretty cool with the bags and the way it is really multi purposed." Before I always thought that the new XB line was to small for two up riding, carrying luggage, and uncomfortable in general. I think the new bike is like an S3 on steroids!

Now with that said, they will still have to pry my M2 from my cold dead hands, but the new bike will deffinately be worth a test ride.

On a positive note, I noticed in the parts section there is an updated high performance oil pump gear for 2006 available to the public. I may be buying one of those!

Koz, I feel the same about my M2. Tubers never die, and now they are "classics"!

I think that depends on the individual. I wouldn't trade or sell my S2T for nothin! Not that I don't think the new model isn't cool, quite the contrary. If I was ever able to afford one, it would just make me a mutiple bike owner.

I am just glad to see Buell lean back towards a multi purposed bike again!

I was thinking that about the Ulysses as well, but it's too tall for me so the S3T will soldier on.

My S3 is the only bike I need.

With a good Mikuni carb on, performance is so close to FI it's not funny. The old PM rims are tough and light. And I can work on it myself!!!

Yeah I do like the no computer crap on my M2 also! Maybe those new Ulysses tires would look tough on my M2?

You know, the FIRST thing I thought of when I saw pics of the Ulysses is "hey, I could take my current critter flattracking"!

You really could, too. Dayum.

There's a "free for use" small flattrack course at one of the Hollister off-road places...

Couldn't be too hard to make a hot-shoe. Scrap metal, some straps...hmmm...

On that oil pump gear: do we know if it's just "tougher", or does it flow more oil?

Chase,
You want an S1, find a way to buy this one: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/129642.html?1122263115#POST483 349

Sounds positively yummy.

Or, talk to me about the shop S1, which is also for sale. Low miles, customized heavily (over $20K invested), basically stock engine, but loaded with other goodies.

I'm keeping my S1W, though!

that new oil drive gear, what years does it directly replace? on early bikes does the gear on the pump need replacement, also? 92,95,97?
my assumption is that that replacement gear goes on the crankshaft, behind the cam drive.
thanks,
tim

my S2 is likely outdated in some resepcts, but then, so am i.
it's not planning on stepping up to a newer owner, and i'm not planning on stepping up to a newer scoot.

Yeah, my shovel is outdated, too. And the Commando, and the Bonneville.

But I still grin every time I ride'em, and that's the object of the drill as far as I'm concerned!

i think the only thing outdated is the fairing of my s3. it resemble that of a late 80s/early 90s jap bike. one reason im planning on trying out the xbR fairing, get a more up-to-date look.

and while id love to have a xb12r for daily use, i wont get rid of the 99 s3, its a great bike

when would simple, effective, and reliable -- be outdated.

Sure go drop 11,000 on a new bike. Have fun dealing with the dealerships and the warranty issues. Then once the warranty runs out.. ouch.

Right now since I am in school and on a limited budget. My x1 with a carb is within my means and I can fix it. Maybe in 2 years when I am making the big bucks then I can afford to pay the dealership 50-90.00 per hour to fix any problems. Maybe by then there will be an aftermarket option to yank the computer and fuel injection. that would be sweet.

don't limit yourself to a buell fairing. look into some of the cool offerings of the aftermarket. match your stock paint on a more exotic fairing and now you're demonstrating the kind of thinking that actually gave us Buell MC in the first place....

How hard is it to replace an oil pump gear? More oil flow is always gooooood! Anyone ever do one? Den 99X1

Denfromphilly: Oil pump drive gear replacement is evidently not too bad of a job. Check the Knowledge Vault for detailed threads on the subject.

The new gear is not a question of more flow, it is a question of flow versus NO flow when the standard gear shreds itself, which has been known to happen.

I love the comments, keep them coming!

I love classic muscle cars and I am starting to think the older my tuber will get the more it may be in that realm. It won't be as famous as a Yenko Camaro (drool!!!) but it's easy to maintain, clean, and sounds 100% balls to the wall

Smoke, no signs of wear on my oil pump gear at the point where my pinion gear was just about toast. The pinion gear is the one with the new part from Buell.

Replacing it by the book is tedious, but not particularly difficult. Both rockerboxes have to come off.

That being said, my local dealer vouched that it is possible to do cams without pulling the rocker boxes, by putting the engine at the right places at the right times.

And possibly, with creative use of putty knives when pulling the cam cover, making sure the cams stay in the bike instead of coming out with the cover, I wonder if you could not just pull and replace the one necessary cam without pulling the rocker boxes.

But regardless, it's just time consuming, not necessarily that hard.

Tubers Outdated? No way!!! Just a different style of motorcycle.

Not to mention, how many manufacturers do you know that introduce new parts to extend the life of their discontinued models?

I think Erik & Company really did their existing customers a service concerning the oil pump drive gear issue and pray that it becomes a trend both with HD/BMC as it can only result in a better image of their products even among the naysayers.

I'll never grow tired of the old S1. If they could design a bike as I thought it should be, nothing comes closer.

It's the same way I feel about my 1911...fits my hand perfectly and with a little tweaking is the thing of dreams, man.
