I need to upgrade the primary chain tensioner on my 99 X1. I already bought the upgraded part from Dave S., but just realized I probably will have to change the gasket when I take the primary cover off. Has anyone done this already? Will I need a new gasket?

Delta -- yep, you'll need a new gasket, specially if you don't have one --

the good news is that the local HD store will almost certainly have one -- it's a sporty part {smile}

make sure it's the new metal gasket -- open it up nad check, I'm sure there are folks out there with the old-style gaskets they might try to give you by mistake, yes?

btw, it's an easy job, really ... put a layer of scotch tape of the shift shaft splines to save the seal

Be careful getting the shift shaft lever off. If you pry too much on it, it'll break.

Those new gaskets last a few times I heard.
Don't pay for the old style. They'll probably try to offload the old ones on you. >: )

You can get the shifter linkage off with a battery terminal puller. Loosen AND REMOVE the bolt before using the puller. I think I bought mine for about $2 at Harbor Freight.

Those instructions from the X1 files will be a big help even though I have the manual. The instructions in the manual aren't that detailed. I've got to buy some more parts before I get started. I was planning on switching to Mobil 1 full synthetic 75/85W when I do this. Anyone have any other recommendations on fluid? I've read the recommendation on the X1 files, but thought I'd ask.

I could be wrong, but I believe all 99 X1's had the wimpy tensioner unless they have been upgraded. I'm in the same boat. I'm not the original owner. I doubt mine is upgraded already, but I won't know for 100% sure until I open it up.

I think Delta is correct; all tubers up through 2000 had the wimpy tensioner. There is no way to see it without removing the primary cover. The X-1 files page has photos of both kinds clearly showing the difference:

Yes. My 2000 X1 had the wimpy one.
I replaced it when my primary gasket went.
It was worn about as bad as the picture above.

I replaced mine right after I got my 2000 S3 (used) at ~6,500 miles. Old shoe looked OK but they can evidently fail under stress (i.e.- hard starts, wheelies, etc.) so I installed the new one.

Thank you very much, everyone!!!

I'm 1/2 way between Phonemanjustin @ 15K and Smokedaddy @ 25K. I have 18K on my '99S3... However, if you ask my mechanic, he will tell you my bike is an anomaly... I still have the stock front brake rotor - no noise or banging or anything. I just upgraded to the new muffler carrier... I have the Race Kit also. I never had to replace any rubber bushes, they just never failed. I've never had any issues with muffler or muffler bracketry failure... I did have the rocker box oil leak failure though... Wound up replacing the rear 3 times, the front once... and I've received all of the recalls and upgrades, to my knowledge... That is why this site of just so important! I will be replacing my "shoe" shortly based on the information I just received here. THANK YOU!!!

You should check and see if you have the new style shifter detent plate. The change was made in 2000 but my 99 X-1 had the new style installed. Supposed to make shifting more positive. If you change the plate replace the clip holding it on also. See pictures here.

I replaced the tensioner on my '99 at 14K. It was the new shoe, so a previous owner had been in there before, but it was well used. I didn't feel at all bad about doing it again.
Oh yeah, notice that the torque is in INCH-pounds.

Thanks everyone... I have a "Chain Adjuster Assy" in my hand. I picked one up this morning while running errands.

Bandm - My shifting is positive... no problems that I can feel. Is there something I can feel or hear that will give away the old vs. new detent plate?

I really don't think you can tell until you have the cover off, and by that time you might as well change it.

Clutch does have to come off to replace the detent plate. You'll have to pull the stator and clutch basket off as one assembly, because of the primary chain. The clutch should start to come off easily, the stator takes a bit of work to get off because of the magnets inside of it. Pull the clutch basket off just a bit, then start working the stator off. Wiggle the stator assembly a bit and it'll come off pretty easily.

One hint for installing the primary cover... cut a few pieces of 1/4-20 all thread to put in the case first, then put the primary cover on. It'll help you out a lot woth lining everything up. If you don't have the all thread, pretty much anything you can use to line everything up (a finishing nail, chunk of coat hanger etc.) will work. Makes the whole assembly procedure a whole lot easier.

Update:

I installed the new chain tensioner yesterday. It seemed to go fairly smooth, so I'll go for a test ride today & make sure. I found I had the wimpy tensioner on mine, but it didn't look too damaged. Of course I only have 5500 miles on my bike. I used the manual and the instructions from the X1 files you guys pointed out to me. Many thanks on that.

I just took a test ride of 98 miles. No problems at all and bike shifts much smoother with the Mobil 1 synthetic in there. I also tossed a tube of the Rocket Fuel octane booster in the gas tank. I picked some up yesterday to try out. Our gas out here in the Peoples' Republic of CA sucks, so the octane boost really seemed to help that as well.
