Thought I'd post some pics of a custom under tail piece I made to get rid of the ugly stock rear trunk/fender/license plate mount piece. I fabricated the piece out of a sheet of aluminum using blocks of wood, a big dead blow hammer, my vice, my dremel and my bench grinder. I should have had it powder coated for durability, but I wanted to get it done the same day, so I just spray painted it a crinkle finish to save time. I'll probably remove it and powder coat it later. The stock license plate light was removed completely and then I used a taillight lens from a Buell Blast because it is clear on the bottom, allowing the lens to do double duty. The under seat lock was relocated underneath the tail. It is in the right front corner of the pan under the seat, but really hard to see in the photos. This whole piece is a little dirty now, since this has now been on my bike for a couple months. I used all stainless steel fasteners with lock washers when I put this together. Rivets probably would have been better, but I wanted to be able to remove this later to have it powder coated.    | ||

That looks very clean. What did you do about the turnsignals? Is it water tight? | ||

I'll try to upload the close up pic in a larger size. As far as the turn signals go, underneath the plastic trunk there are already aluminum mounting blocks on the tail. I just cleaned up the aluminum area and mounted the signals right back where they were. This is not completely watertight, but neither was the stock trunk. It is just as watertight as the stock trunk was. If I have problems in the winter, I'll probably tape or caulk around the edges on the inside of the trunk.  | ||

Nice work, do X1's have the little thumb screw for the seat, if so how do you get to it now, as I am planning on making something up for my M2, hopefully it will turn out as nice. | ||

Ceejay, Thanks for the compliment. The X1 seat is just held on by the locking latch. The is no thumb screw. I relocated the lock from the side of the "trunk" to the bottom of the undertail. The latch part is in the same position as it was before. The thumb screw might be even easier to deal with. Good luck. |
