shredded the oil pump drive gear on 1998 sportster was running 6500 rpm in 4th gear, was about to upshift when i felt a vibration????? looked down and oil pressure indicator lit up. pulled clutch, shut her down, coasted all the way home. oil pump is full of drive gear particles. Harley store claims not to sell the old obsolete oil pump. any one know who DOES sell a new stock oil pump assembly? got 50,000 extremely hard abusive miles on the stocker, so no real need to do anything fancy here.

He is somewhat correct in that the old pump has been superceded by a new part number. Just get a pump for a 2002 Sportster and you will be fine.

Isn't there some other minor changes that need to be made when upgrading to the newer pump? I don't recall what they are but do recall enough to know to ask about it when the need arises, or something like that. Don't recall if it's an oil line routing, or gasket trim, or drive gear change, or something else that needs to be tweaked or changed.

Might be nothing, ignore me, or verify it and post back. I think I'll walk down the hall now.

You will need to tap the case (arrow) and place a check valve in the line. The old style pumps have the valve inside and go directly to where the arrow is. The fitting with the pressure switch is the pump output and the fitting with the arrow is the input to the engine. The check valve is between the two. I also have the oil filter mounted in this line, and an oil cooler mounted to the sump return line, the fitting above the arrow fitting. There are kits available to do this as Rick_a says.

That must just be on a Sportster because there is no work necessary to put the pump on an older Buell.I don't believe the new one is for a 2002,old # is a -90,new # is 26487-98.If your dealer cannot get one get hold of Dave S.

Jim,
I just used 2002 as a reference for his obviously dumb parts guy to look up. wasn't trying to imply it was a 2002 part number

The picture is the mod for pre 91 for the 99 pump (disregard). The 99 pump 26487-98 has been superseded to 26204-91A and is a direct replacement for 91-05 sportsters and buells. Go figure the the numbering system?

FMJ here's a GIF I saw, don't know if you have it or not.
