Yo All from Philly, I bought a 99X1 over the winter. It is truly an amazing machine, has the race ecm, V&H, cam, remapped FI, cooling fan, de-snorkeled, handles very naturally and brakes like it's chained to a tree. I am Ohhhh Soooo happy. I have some questions and I know it's all been rehased many times but I am confused. First my breathers ooze oil into my intake and air box. There is a catch can with a filter on top that is fed by a hose from the top of my oil tank. There are no other oil lines to the catch can. What does it do? It never seems to fill with oil in 2000 miles. It has a second unused fitting that I could plumb the breathers into, should I do it? I also want to gear it so I have lower top speed and more rpm at low speed. It would be better in stop and go traffic. Is there a pulley combination that you can recommend and where are the parts available? I have read all kinds of things that my bike has 29/61 pulleys, 27/55, I don't know what is stock and whether to change front or rear. Thanks Den 99X1 |

"It's my understanding" sombody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can change 1 pulley. I believe they are sets to use the same belt length. I also "believe" they are geared as low as it gets without converting to a chain. I suggest to leave it alone till you get some miles behind you, you may get used to it and like it. The catch can should have the head breather tubes routed to it. Early on, alot of guys overfilled the oil tank (as it is a dry sump motor) then when they started it the oil in the sump caused an overfill situation and it came out the top of the tank. The previous owner may have made that mistake and creatively solved it not understanding what happened. |

Thanks, I did overfill mine the first time I changed the oil. Had oil coming out all over, what a mess... I had considered that the belt length would change and pose a problem if I changed one pulley so I appreciate your response on adjustment. Oh well, no easier wheelies and even faster accelleration for me. |

if you change one pully you must change the other.. but you can do this to achieve your goal.. just do some research.. you can swap out the stockers for different teeth combo's for different goals... just make sure you keep the ratio the same... don't change the total number of teeth.... |

There is a 26 tooth front pulley available for Baker as well as DB. Depending on the age of you belt, you may have enough adjustment to make this work without changing the belt. Good Luck |

you can, in fact, make some of the available pulley changes without chaning both, and retain the stock belt -- there's a fair amount of adjustment available -- for instance, stock US front pulley and Euro-spec rear pulley work just fine with the stock belt, with the adjustors almost all the way back |

Pulleys can be changed without touching the belt,AFAIK,just one belt offered.I had a 27/55 set-up on the S-2 at Bonneville, just had to make some spacers to get all the adjustment out of it.The parts books show some Euro only parts that apparently do the same thing. If you change from a 29-27 or from a 55-61 no belt change necessary. No such beast as "matched pulleys".If you have the stock pulley standard on an X-1 it will be a 27tooth.You will need to go aftermarket to get a smaller--i.e. 26 tooth. No other rears I am aware of other than the 61 US or 55 Euro ones.Mind I have heard you may need to clearance the newer aluminum swingarm if you went to the smallest combo--27/55,I had the early swingarm. |

Hey thanks for the help. My service manual says mine should be a 27/61. Baker does make the pulley in a 26. I will count the teeth on mine, it had a lot of mods to it already and I know the speedo is off by 10%..reads higher than the actual speed. If I get a 26 tooth does the aluminum one have wear problems in a street application? Thanks again, Den 99X1 |

The baker all aluminum pulley is for racing use not street use. BUt if you want one I have a brand new baker 26 tooth aluminum pulley I will sell you for $100. They go about $200 retail. ddunn@satx.rr.com |

Hi Dan, Thanks for the offer but I want the steel pulley. I still want to take mine apart and make sure it's not the 26 t already. Den |
