Well I have owned my 00 X1 since Thursday. I put about 300 miles on it this weekend. Here is what I have so far. Rocker box leak. Broken bracket for voltage regulator. Here is my BIG PROBLEM.

It cruises along fine at 80-90 no problem. When I try hard acceleration from a stop or from cruising speed it has hesitation and bogs down. I know it could be a great number of things but is there anything really common to the Buell and really obvious I should look for. I am not used to having 5 sensors to deal with.
Its a darn shame to have a little hot rod bike like this that takes off like an 883 Sporty. Any hints let me know.

Hmm i just got a used x1 2 weeks ago , so far I havent had any problems with it but i was prepared to take it to a dealer and have it checked out. Thye should charge more than an hour. Since I am a harley tech and you arent i think you would be grateful for the info that they will be able to tell you after a pro check out. Like you say it could be alot of things. DID you try here yet?http://www.saintjohn.nbcc.nb.ca/marriott/x1/

I had this same problem on my used S2. Apparently the previous owner had done a lot of modifications to the bike and after he found out how little the dealer was going to give him for a trade in he put a stock exhaust from an S1WL on it for trade in. After I found out about this I put a better flowing aftermarket on and ta da!!! It runs like a scalded dog now.

If it doesn't already have it install the Race ECM. Tha should help the boging.

MMMI,
Most dealers don't know their butts from a hole in the ground when it comes to Buells. taking it to a dealer to get it checked out is like taking your dog to a butcher to get surgery Sure they might know what parts do what but do you really want him cutting on your dog?

PS,
That doesn't apply to all dealers as there are a few good ones but it seems like most dealers mechanics just don't know how to work on Buells.

Not to hijack this thread but what should the labor time be (for a dealership mechanic) to replace the front rocker box gaskets on an X1??

TIA
Frank

Frank,
Do yourself a favor and get a service manual, a set of allen wrenches and a torque wrench and do it yourself. Its a fairly easy job and you will gain intimate knowledge of your machine if you do it yourself.

It took Spidy (not a buell tech, but very good w/ buell engines) and i about 2 hours to replace both cylinder rocker box gaskets on my 02, X-1. by yourself, if you have a decent mechanical skill shouldn't take more than a couple hours.. just make sure to get the new rubber/metal gaskets not the paper replacements. and scrape off the old ones good w/o gouging the heads. no worries

ratchdaddy - have you had the TPS re-set? my 02 X-1 was bogging down BAD! the same scenario as yours.. after i got the Supertrapp IDS, and K&N kit... so spidy re-set my TPS, and voila. but since i got the Race ECM, it is much better at acceleration... Check your plugs, wires, O2 sensor, and possibly temp sensor.. but get a TPS re-set before any of that... most dealers can do a TPS re-set in like 5-10 minutes (if they arn't jerks, and know what they are doing). if they come up w/ any error codes, i.e. Temp sensor or O2 sensor, they are SIMPLE to change out. if no error codes, then take it for a spin and see what she does. If she still bogs down, i would get the race ECM, and see how that works.. problem is once you get the new ECM you must have yet another TPS re-set.

Hope all goes well. ENJOY THAT BIKE!!

I apsolutley aggree theres alot of guys who dont know a wrench from a micrometer at some dealers and the one around here is one for sure. They do have one old guy in the i know of dont know him that well though but hes been at the dealer for like 10 years. I havent yet but should inquire about thier current knowledge, current feeling around is that they suck. Our other dealer in the city doesnt sell buells but they do sell 20k bikes and cant keep up with chrome bolt on jobs. I decided not to work there either.

Ratchdaddy,
Might be TPS related. That's all I got for ya, sorry. A good tech will probably diagnose it right quick though.

Well as far a good techs go, I will have to do some checking around out here. The nearest HD dealer doesnt even sell Buell parts. Anyone have any good recommendations in SoCal? I live up in Twentynine Palms so I will check with Palms Springs HD next.

I used to do all the work on the 97 Sporty so with a manual I can figure most stuff out. Just not real well versed with the EFI thing.

Does the dealer have to reset the TPS? That is what it sounds like from everyones post.

Ratchetdaddy,
A scan tool is required to do the TPS reset so you will need the dealer or an independent tech with the factory scan tool and Buell cartridge for the scan tool. I think the scan tool is an OTC Monitor 4000 but I can't swear to that because it has been so long since I've seen one of those things up close (they've been obsolete in the auto repair scene for years). Standard Ignition's BDM is the new scanner for HD and Buell so if you knew a Subaru technician (Subi uses that scanner also) and had the cartridge for him that would be another way around it.

Ok so I reckon I need to be on the lookout for a good buell tech somewhere in the palm springs area. Any suggestions?
