I recently bought a 98 S1W I hate the rear fender. If I relocate the plate under the tail light is it safe to run without a rear fender? Or will there be a problem with throwing water and dirt into anything that shouldnt get wet? | ||

Get a fender from a S-2 or S-3 and you are good to go. | ||

This hugger will give the water protection for the under side. It can be easily trimmed shorter if you want a less full fendered look. It is light pre-preg, not that heavy stuff that Buell used for the original. License plate bracket is here Al | ||

Speaking of rear fenders and huggers and such, did my RS ever have one when it was stock? It does not have one now, and there's always a nice coating of (whatdya call that stuff- mung?, spew?, smegma?) under the seat area and on the frame and swing arm below the battery - yech! AL | ||

RS and RSS did not come with hugger rear fenders. Guess you just have to clean it more!!  | ||

I've got a Carbon Fiber fender thats been trimed down that fits a S1 and ?. Looks real nice. $40 if you want it. I run with no inner fender, I just like the look better. The only problem that I ever have is rocks chip up the paint some on top of the swingarm. I'm going to cut a small piece of 3M paint protector to place on the top of the swingarm to prevent that. My fender problem is a little different from what preceeds this in this thread. I have a 1997 S3 and the fender (not the subfender) keeps fracturing. The holes where the turn signal mounting bolts and wires go through the fender are apparently weak points and the fender tends to crack through them. I've relpaced it once already and even reinforced the holes on each side with two layers of fiberglass before I installed the replacement. No matter, it cracked anyway. Has anybody experienced this and does anybody know of a solution? I think a welded-up alloy fender would solve the problem permanently, and that it'd look really good anodized black and clear-coated, but I don't know of anyone who produces such a product. Help! | ||

nobody makes a metal fender for a Buell and it would be a ton of work to make one. I suggest you just buy an aftermarket carbon fiber fender to replace your stocker. | ||

Try this ARA...I repaired mine with a larger surface area washer and munged up some 2 part epoxy specific for plastics/fiberglas.Also make sure you install the turn signal hardware before it cures.Spray some flat black paint and your done. Fiberglas is kinda weak when used for patch in this particular area.My right rear signal still vibrates when at idle revealing a small fracture that occurred prior to the repair.that's just cosmetic stronger than new.   | ||

Bulliedan: It appears that the aftermarket concentrates on the subfenders. Other than the dealer, I haven't found a source for the fender to which the turn signals and license plate are attached. Nitsebes: I'll have to look for that special purpose epoxy. Thanks for the hint and the photos! Do you think that my cracked fender could be repaired using that stuff, or it is a gonner? A friend of mine has a MIG welder and I'm pretty good at metal fabrication. If I can find some 1/8th inch alloy, I bet I can fabricate my own fender. The shape of the stock part is pretty boxy, so I think it can be done in a home shop environment. | ||

Mine broke on my 97, also...I just left it off and fabbed a license bracket....I was thinking that the saddlebag bracket off an S3T might add the needed support...the bracket under the plate. I have one that I bought, trying to piece together bags, that I'll never get to. I could sell and send you for $65....DaveS could probably get you one...or ebay -Al |
