Has anyone here thought of or tried this? I like the Airtech S1 stuff, but I have heard a lot of negative comments about their quality and customer service. I think the XB parts look sexier, too.

Tom,
I'm planning on mounting a Firebolt fairing on my M2 sometime in the near future. Have been talking alot about it with Spidey...he did it a while back and there seems to be quite a bit of fabricating involved to get the fairing on a tube frame, but as I'm sure you'll agree, it'll will be well worth the effort.

I'm sure spidey can weigh in with much more detail than I can.

Anyone else put an XB fairing on a tube frame...I'd love to hear how it went.

Devdawg:
I've see Spideys setup firsthand. That is what got me thinking about it in the first place. I've never been completely in love with the rectangular headlight in my S2. I was thinking about the factory XBR fairing or the full Sharkskinz unit sold by Hals. I am wondering if that one would be tall enough and wide enough to work on the tube frame. Its pricey, so I might just go with the factory unit.

I have been thinking about it as well, and I think I may try to fabricate a 2006 Confederate Wraith-style fairing for my S1W. It amounts to one big sheet with few contours, and maybe some forming for the leading edge for airflow...I dunno... I just love the Wraith!

Tom,
The rectangle headlight is the main reason I haven't gone that direction.

I see something similar to the Sharkskinz at yoyodyneti.com, but those would need work to put the Head light(s)in.

There are a couple of taller shields that fit the Firebolt fairing that would give you a little more wind deflection.

I've seen a few other universal fairings that would work but none that look as good as the Firebolt, I think....
Let me know how it's coming.

Tom,
A full XB faring kit will ot fit, it is designed to wrap around the lower frail rail of the XB so you will have a Ugly Gap and mounitng would be a PITA.

I am not too familare with the S2 faring mounting system But I do know there are Two tubes that come off the main frame to support the Faring stay on the S2 that would either have to be delt with OR removed completly and welded over.

If you want you can come over my house when the weather warms up and we can take a look at what we can do, I still have the XB stuff layin around so You can get a Idea,

BUT the stuff isn;t for sale, sorry but it is waiting on a Helmet for it's replacement. (Dev will get that one ; ) )

Let me know Ted I'd be glad to help ya out!

S-2 fairing stay is a separate piece, slides into front of frame tubes holes.unbolts,no cutting needed.

Yeah but there will be two tubes that remain after removal that the XB faring won't use.

Does the S2 faring still mounts to the neck also?

Spidey:
Yes, there is a support bracket from the neck to the fairing support. My Feb. build frame has the add on cast aluminum/u-bolt support bolted to the neck, my March build frame has a bracket welded on the neck.
I am envisioning building a fairing support for the new XB unit that attaches to the frame in the same manner as the original S2 fairing mount. If those open frame tubes are there I might as well try to use them, and I can replace it if the need arises.
You are waiting on a helmet to replace the XB fairing? Have you been reading Streetfighters magazine, bloke?

Still cannot envision what tubes you are refering to.If you take off fairing mount there is nothing on the front of the bike anymore.

I figured those were what you were refering to but cannot see them being in the way, they barely stick out beyond the downtubes.

I don't consider them in the way, they are just a little extra tubing that the other (M2/S1) frames don't have. I want to try to fab up something similar to the stock fairing mount that will slide into those stubbies and accept a Firebolt fairing.

Thanks for the tip on Yoyodyne. That is way more affordable. I didn't care for the Wraith when it first came out, but it has grown on me. If they could get the price down a little....

Tom you would have to make a WHOLE new mount for the XBR's faring if you were to do it like that.
magnesium don't weld too well ; )

I want to put my fab skillz to the test, plus I've got way too much free time.

I've got lots of great ideas floating around in my head, just ask me.

Tom

It is the SharkSkinz XB upper and bellypan with an Airtech tail section.

Your question was the first time I'd ever come across someone else with the same thought, so I had to end my lurker status and figure out how to post a picture.

Glad you like it, I think it turned out well.

I knew that was the Airtech GP rear, but I wasn't completely sure that was a full XB unit on a tuber, it looks better than I expected. That is EXACTLY what I am after. Can you please post more pictures and give some details. There is a lot of black there, so it is hard to make out some of the details.

Thanks
