It's a 12. The one on the bottom is actually the same bike after I traded parts and converted it.

I took a primary I had laying around, stripped it with a brush attachment for a drill. Then started my way up the "grit ladder" with sandpaper. Then once you reach desired finish, start polishing.

In my defense, I think it looks good for only being able to obtain 1000 grit sandpaper. I wanted to go to 2k grit, but I couldn't find any locally.

I also switched the shifting setup to GP, & removed the Emissions Cannister.

In the process I had the opportunity to fill the Primary (just changed oil last week) with Full Synthetic, and adjust the clutch, as well as reset the primary chain tension.

I spent more than 60hrs sanding and polishing this piece, but keep in mind, I did all of the sanding and polishing (with the exception of the final finish coat) by hand, without any powertools except the drill for the initial stripping of the finish.

wet sanding with 2000, then hit it with some mother's and a buffing wheel, it would look like chrome! i respect that work, i spent 14 hrs on my pipe and 7 hrs on my supertrapp!

i've had good luck polishing metal with Scotch Brite pads, of varying "grits" (this stuff hangs in long after sandpaper has given up), and/or steel wool, #0 for the initial work, up to #0000 for the finer detail, along with the polishing "fluid" of your choice (Mothers for me, please).

sandpaper has it's place (right after i've finished all the prep work with several different files), but i like the effects from the Scotch Brite pads and/or steel wool for the final polishing stages.

these two items can even be used dry, to burnish the metal, with good effect. always experiment on an inconspicuous area first, of course.

SLeeZ, how's my polish work holding up on the Thong?

All I could find was up to 1000grit, and they didn't have steel wool fine enough at the stores. It's hard for me to find exactly what I am looking for over here. The only place I was told I could get 2k grit would have been an autobody shop, which I don't know where one is.

Yeah, they're Converse. The license plate is on there somewhere. I got the tail piece from American Sport Bike. The plate should actually be in the stock location of a 9S. It's funny you noticed the shoes because that's all I ever wear and sometimes I take alot of crap over it.

Brineusaf,

If you are down to 1000 grit it is probably time for the NevrDul magic wadding. It comes in a can and looks like cotton wadding saturated with something. If you have PX around that caters to Navy folk or Marines, they probably have NevrDul.

Last I knew, Air Force policy was that if they wanted it to be polished they issued it to you that way, right?

Those investment cast primary covers will not polish up as bright as billet aluminum stuff will because of the granular structure of cast aluminum. Your look like they are about as bright as investment cast aluminum gets.

Aluminum can be chrome plated, look at the chrome plated replacement covers offered for the H-D models. Don't think I've heard of one for the Buells though.

Another tip, the Marines have some stuff called M-Nu that comes in a little bottle with a brush applicator. It is used for restoring the finish on flat black insignia. That stuff is great for touching up rubs or scratches on anything painted flat black.

M-Nu works good on gun sights too, but you still want to smoke them with soot them too.

Jack,

NevrDul magic wadding - i saw this... i remember using it to polish some old bathroom fixtures. you think it will turn out better than my 1kgrit and mothers polish?

...and they didn't have steel wool fine enough at the stores.

give whatever steel wool you can get your hands on a try, even the "less fine" stuff, and you might be pleasantly surprised. try an inconspicuous area first, and even try the stuff dry. i've hand-polished a TON of m/c parts over the years (including the frame on my VFR), and steel wool, used at the right time - even stuff that seems too "coarse" - can be amazing.

in the final polishing stages i actually prefer to use the stuff dry, as Mothers, and other polishing "fluids," actually "melts" the metal a little (at least in the case of aluminum) to aid in the polishing process.

this is all well and good early on, but towards the end you don't need a chemical burrowing into your metal and exposing pits and the like.

at this point, burnishing with steel wool is a great way to go - gently, almost with a lover's hand - as you're not diving into the metal, simply putting a shine to the very tiptop layer. again, even #0 steel wool can be a blessing when you're trying to see your reflection in a primary case, and if you CAN get some finer stuff, so much the better.

i shouldn't have to emphasize that the steel wool be as virgin as possible - any foreign bodies embedded in it (say, from lying next to your bench grinder for the last couple of months), will have a way of ruining your day.

the primary case pictured above looks great, but with a little more caressing could be even prettier, IMO.

Right, well... maybe this winter when I have the free time and no opportunity to go riding I might give it another shot. But for now it's more than good enough for me, I'll be ordering 2k grit paper in a few weeks for some other parts anyways, maybe I'll add some super fine steel wool into the mix as well.

I just missed a pic. . . the one day I don't have my camera, I hear a huge bang a couple minute ago.

Tower crane outside my window on skyscraper just collapsed.

Streets full of crumpled crane and emergency vehicles

Install Firefox (it's a web browser). Much less glitchy than IE6. Or you can install the beta version of IE7.
