Conversations with real LEOs show that Domestic violence calls are the most hated and feared, for the twin reasons of great personal risk, ( arresting a drunk, strong, violent thug, and getting stabbed by the bruised and bleeding wife you're trying to protect ) and utter futility. Honor Harrington Harry Potter Twilight Honor is my favorite since it's Hard SF, and the Adult series in the three, although suitable for children if you don't mind answering tough questions about death, war, and politics. I'd rate it good for tweens but not kindergarten. There is great evil in this universe, slavery, racism, cruelty, and bureaucracy. Our heroes fight for rights, obligations, freedoms. Harry Potter otoh is unabashedly for children, and adults wanting escapism. There is great evil... Pretty much same attitude, completely different universe. I favor the martial arts and weapons competence in Honor over twitch magic wand when it comes to personal combat, reflecting my own preferences, but I also prefer the handwavium of hyper drives to tramsmogrification, flight by counter-grav over magical brooms. But both are author's devices for moving the plot and characters around. A historical romance has horses and daggers. I don't mind stretching the imagination. Either series is a good example of a growth of character and journey through maturity, albeit Honor starts with young adults and Harry with grade school kids. Twilight? Utter adolescent trash. Pretty much every bad idea from toxic codependency to unrequited obsession is on display, and to be fair, the Bad Guys are basically Mean Girls with superpowers and in rival gangs/cliches. ( I only read #1, so it's possible the later books were better, but from the movie trailers... I doubt it ) I'd be mildly interested in a study on IQ between Harry Potter & Twilight fans. I have an obvious opinion.  There's a remote chance for an Honor Harrington movie series, but I think Hollywood has to get a new generation of executives and that's probably going to take an asteroid strike or worse to change, although movies like Arrival and The Martian do give me hope. The Morality Plays in popular fiction directly affect the morals of each generation. Harry Potter is imperfect, but it's light years better than Twilight. J.K.Rowling vs. The Karens... In retrospect, the folk complaining about promoting witchcraft in children's books, really should apologize as the Woke Mob attacks Ms. Rowling for refusing to accept their own impossible magical transformations and Pure Blood Conformity. It's far easier and less risky in today's Post 1984 world to explain to children that magic wands are imaginary than to counter pedo grooming and abuse of children psyches in today's miseducation system. | ||

( 19 times the "normal" suicide rate per one probably flawed & biased study, so be very skeptical ) I do think based on watching relationships get trashed by hormone use, among Lesbians I personally know, that it's quite likely there will be massive depression going on, ( often among the affected not taking Testosterone ) and withdrawal problems with changing brain chemistry. How bad it is to realize you screwed up your body and remorse, I can only vaguely imagine. And it's been true for thousands of years, that kids who are L, G, and/or B, have suffered from depression and suicide dealing with their desires and the cruelty of other children, society, religious rules, etc. I was kinda hoping that the recent increase in tolerance by the public for Gays ( I use the term here inclusive to multiple non -standard sexuality ) in the late 20th & early 21st century. In the Western world. Would reduce that problem. Reduce. I don't expect instant miracles. But I don't think this really has anything to do with gay & women's rights, except the apparent exploitation of the movement by these pedo/gender/psych cultists. Martial arts, both SCA fencing and "heavy" full contact armored combat. Fencing is sex divided in the Olympics, but not SCA. Speed, accuracy and aggressiveness are more important than mass and power, so we let everyone compete equally. That's not true in "heavy", speed and accuracy is still a winning way, but raw power counts. If I can force you off balance or stop block your weapon, better yet, leverage it out of line, I can take advantage. If both fighters are equally skilled, the bigger/stronger will win. That's true in every martial art. The main reason the SCA doesn't have classes by sex, is we don't have enough female competitors to have separate classes, and for Monarchists, we are very egalitarian. To be honest, girls don't win a lot of heavy tournaments. But they have fun. They understand the advantages and that they have to be better. Totally different world in Title IX sports. | ||

I do not hate cyclists, but some of them sure act the ass on the road. They want to be treated like vehicles but they run stop signs and lights. They hold up traffic and refuse to ride on the shoulder or use the bike path that is provided for them. I guess that makes me racist some strange how. | ||

I'll spread some blame around, most Congresscritters refuse to remove the old drug laws for various reasons. Some don't want to be seen as soft on crime and doing nothing takes little effort. Others do very well in bribes. And some are anti liberty and love the Power the War on Drugs gives them to oppress, especially the more racist aspects. I also point out very few Congresscritters want to abolish the IRS, since it's how they get paid and get money to pay back those who bribe them. That's practical. And mostly bipartisan.
