It Was A Bargain!!! Today, I blew my budget and I don’t regret it. Actually, I started a spending spree yesterday. I was at Wally World and I was going to buy two pairs of curtains for the bedroom. Instead of two pairs, I bought four. I was afraid that if I waited until next month, they’d sell out. I’ve had that happen to me in the past. So I bought the four pairs and put them on the plastic. I figured that I could pay half now, and pay the other half next month. Then, when I got home and looked at my e-mail, Iron Pony Motorsports in Columbus sent me a letter saying that they had Kilimanjaro and Katmandu Jackets for $138.99. I got fired up when I read that and called them. I guess they’re Blems or something, but they usually sell for $499.95. I asked if this was an Internet only kind of deal, or were they in stock and the guy on the phone told me that they had them in the store. So I called David and talked him into driving up to Columbus today. It snowed a little bit last night. Not much, maybe 2 inches; but it was enough to make the streets messy. Anyhow; we went up to Westerville (a suburb of Columbus) and spent about an hour and a half at Iron Pony. Now, Iron Pony Motorsports is a motorcyclist’s dream of a shop. It’s huge! I think it used to be a K Mart; but now it’s filled with motorcycles and all kinds of accessories. They sell something like 7 different brands of bikes - Indian, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Triumph and Can Am three wheelers and they have thousands of different gear items from incredibly cheap to top of the line expensive. You can get cheap Chineseum jackets for $38.00 or you can buy Klim jackets and pants for over $700.00 each and hundreds of others in between. I looked at both Firstgear jackets and grabbed a Kilimanjaro. Tried it on to make sure it fit and that was all I needed. It went into the shopping cart. (A motorcycle accessory shop that has shopping carts!) Then, we went over to the boot section and I tried on a bunch of different boots to see which fit best. I wasn’t buying today, but I wanted to note which ones to come back for when I get my Income Tax return. I tried on boots from Milwaukee Leather, Firstgear, Noru, Alpinestar and Tourmaster. I finally picked a pair that felt best from Noru. David took a picture of the label on the box, so I’ll know which boots to go after when I go back. I also grabbed a couple of packs of socks that were two pairs for $4.95. I got the jacket for $360.00 under MSRP. We left Iron Pony at 1:30 PM and we hit a Mexican restaurant that was about a mile away and struck gold once again. The food was really good. I got a Colorado Burrito that was very flavorful and David had a Fajita that he liked. The salsa that came with the chips was extremely tasty. It wasn’t hot, but it had a wonderful flavor. I’ll be eating there again. Maybe I’ll try to organize a Meet&Eat there when the weather gets warmer. Have a really good lunch, then hit Iron Pony so that people who haven’t been there can see what it’s like to visit Candyland. The ride home was pretty uneventful, with the exception of finding gas at only $2.99/Gallon at a Sheetz near Washington Court House. I got a cup of good coffee there and drank it as we drove back to Cincinnati. It was a great way to spend a grey winter day when the temperature stayed well below freezing. And I have a new jacket that I’ll be wearing to the Arctic! |

Crusty's snippet: Angel or Devil I got that e-mail about the Buell Super Cruiser being on display at Daytona and my mind has been racing since. I feel like I’ve got the old angel on one shoulder and the old devil on the other. One’s telling me that I shouldn’t go and the other is telling me that I should. there are compelling arguments for both sides and I’m not too sure which side is the Angel and which side is the Devil. When I look at them, I see myself in both. Arguments for going are that it wouldn’t cost that much. Camping in Deland at the Fastlane Campground is only $15.00/night. I don’t know gas prices between here and Daytona, but I figure $200.00 would be ample and I expect that the prices would be lower as I went south. Even if prices stay the same, That should be enough. I can eat pretty cheaply when I’m traveling. One other thing is that I can get a “Super Ticket” that gives me admission to both Flat track races and to the Daytona 200 for $100.00. I could do the trip for under $500.00. I could Demo ride bikes and see the accessories show for free during the day and see the races at night. That’s besides checking out the new model Buells. I’m enamored with the Super Cruiser, but I also would like to see the Super Tourer. My friend Roy has a strong interest in it. I could also check out the big swap meet right by the campground. And the weather is forecast to be almost Ideal - highs in the mid-70s to low 80s and sunny. One other argument for going is that it will give me a chance to check out how to pack the Express with my gear. I’ll bring the same amount of gear that I’ll be carrying on my trip to Tuk. It will be a good shake down ride. Arguments against going are mainly, Five Hundred Bucks is Five Hundred Bucks. I’ll need that when I go to Tuk. But I’m thinking that I can do both trips without too much strain on my finances. If I owe Discover $500.00 at the end of my trip to the Arctic, the interest will only be something like 10 bucks per month and it will be paid off within the next month or two. I have a few friends whose opinions I respect that will have nothing to do with Liquid Assets after the way they screwed Erik Buell. The way I’m looking at it is that if Buell (Liquid Assets) goes belly up, then all of Erik’s innovations will just fade away and he and his companies will be a minor footnote in history. However; if I buy a (LA)Buell, I’m showcasing the advances Erik pushed through, in spite of all of the Corporate resistance he got from the forward thinking executives (HA!!!) at the MoFoCo. Those brilliant buffoons took the engine that was promised to Erik and re-engineered it to the point that it was useless for a Sport bike. But they KNEW what would sell. I guess that’s why the V-scrod was such a financial success. Or somethin’. If those same paragons of engineering had found a cure for their advanced rectal occulitis, then they might have built something like the Super Cruiser. An FXR frame with a real powerhouse engine and good brakes and suspension. A far better bike in almost every respect that looks a lot better, as well. Then again; they were the same great thinkers who thought that Elton John was the embodiment of of the Spirit of Harley-Davidson. (I wonder if that’s why so many Harley riders like to dress like gay pirates?) Well; the mental debate is continuing. If I’m going to go, I’d better decide soon; Bike week starts in a couple of days. This is a Test: Daytona Or Bust! I guess I should have written this sooner. I’ve decided to go to Daytona. I wrote about it on the forums I frequent, but not everybody on my mailing list frequents those forums. So far, this morning, I’ve had two friends write back saying , “Good!” I had to do a bit of figuring expenses. That happened at around 3:00 AM the other night (Morning?). How much is gas going to cost; as well as camping, food, etc. First, I figured out how much it would cost to go to Daytona; then I did a rough estimate of how much it’s going to cost to go to the Arctic Ocean. I’m reasonably sure I’ll have more than enough set aside for both trips. I’ve been doing a bit of packing, but I won’t be loading the bike until Monday. I have clothes stuffed into ziplock bags. The little laptop, along with the plug in antenna (to boost the range it can receive WiFi) and cordless mouse all fit in the smaller bags ziplocks that I’m now using. I’m trying to pack like I will when I head North. I don’t have the extra gas can yet, so that won’t be on the bike; but just about everything else will be the same. As of right now, it’s all looking pretty positive. I’m feeling a bit pumped up. The Tramp part of my nature is awake and grinning like the Chesire Cat I’m heading out Tuesday morning and I plan to take two days to get there. I plan to check out the Buell Super Cruiser as a well as the Super Tourer. My friend Roy is really drawn to the Tourer, but I feel the pull of the Cruiser. I think if I get one and set it up like the Gentleman’s Express, it would make an incredibly sweet Sport-Tourer. My opinion may change when I see it in person; but at present, I think it has a very strong potential for becoming my next motorcycle purchase. I’m also going to see both Flat Track Nationals as well as the Daytona 200. I think I’ll hit the Swap Meet which is (I think) right by the campground that I’m staying at in DeLand. (I’m staying at the Fastlane Campground. They only want $15.00 per night) I also think I’ll do some Demo Rides. I’d like to check out the new Harleys. The Pan America, Nightster and Spurtster S. I have no interest in the S; but if I’m going to dump heaps of derision on it, I should ride it so I have an honest disgust. The S has no appeal for me at all; but badmouthing it without test riding it is like not voting, then slamming the politicians who got elected. So; now you know. I’ll be on the road for a week starting Tuesday. I hope the little laptop works well and that I’ll be able to take it when I head for Tuktoyaktuk. I think either Ribs or Brisket would be good for Dinner tonight. (Message edited by Crusty on March 05, 2023) |

03/06/2023 11 years ago,on 03/06/2012, skilled surgeons split me open like a baked, stuffed Lobster; then cut the Aortic Valve out of my heart and replaced it with a Carbon & Stainless mechanical valve. To celebrate the anniversary of this momentous incident in my personal history, I didn't do a freakin' thing; except to reflect how many good things have happened to me since. Life really IS good!!! |

"If the surgery is good enough for Crusty it's good enough for me!" A response I got from a longtime friend of mine who is facing the same surgery in April. He appeared to be a bit down in the dumps or depressed because of it, so Crusty's sharing of his firsthand experience has helped brighten his day. |

>>>Crusticle is attempting a 900 mile day to beat the storm home from tona. Hope he makes it. And makes it safe and sound. I've been there, done that. Not from Daytona, but trying to out run a storm over a 900+ mile trip. It's kinda exhilarating, but exhausting at the same time. I ended up wet... Another time I was racing to beat/get out of the heat. Didn't quite win that one either. Ended up damn near heat stroked. Had to stop for a hour in Southern Missouri to rehydrate. Nature is cruel. |

I'm in a Motel 6 in Cleveland, Tennessee. When the rain turned into sleet, I decided that it was smarter to spend the money on a room than having to spend a lot more repairing the bike because I crashed. As Ourdee said, I lost about 3 hours coming up I-75 due to rush hour traffic and a couple of accidents. I think I dislike riding through Atlanta more than I dislike riding through Salt Lake City. Both suck, but Atlanta on a Saturday evening is as bad as SLC was on a weekday morning. |

Smart decision to stop. No point in riding in brutal unsafe conditions. I used to take pride in that foolishness, but not anymore. I've gone through SLC and The ATL. Traffic sucks in both, but I disliked the ATL more. Just felt like I was more likely to get shot going through Atlanta than Salt Lake City. |

I Hate I-75 I left Daytona on Saturday morning because I saw that the weather was going to get ugly. I checked the hourly forecasts for the bigger cities along the way, and if I could make it home before midnight, I’d beat most of the ugliness. However; there were several areas on I-75 where traffic came to a stop; then crawled along at clutch slipping speeds for a while, before I would finally get past whatever caused the slowdown. Each time that happened, I figure I lost a half hour. Then I had to go through Atlanta.I lost at least two hours there crawling at speeds that seldom reached 10 MPH (16 kph) Once through Atlanta, then there were a couple more slowdowns for absolutely no apparent reason. Finally; traffic started flowing at a faster pace; I eventually got to run in 5th gear, though speeds stayed at the speed limit or a little under. People would get in the left (Passing) lane and use that as a travel lane. They would keep pace with the vehicle in the right lane and spaced themselves so that it was very difficult to pass. To travel at the speed limit (or my usual 5 to 10 MPH over), I’d have to weave through traffic. I really didn’t want to do that. I finally got into Tennessee around 8:00 and then the rain started. The rain that wasn’t supposed to start until 11:00. That was bad enough; but when it turned to sleet and I could hear the ice pellets hitting my helmet and windshield, I decided to stop at a Motel 6. I got up Sunday morning and checked the weather radar. It looked like I might hit the tail end of the rain in the morning, but I should have an overcast but dry run home. Ha!!! I got soaked. It rained heaviest in the areas where it was supposed to be dry and the temperatures dropped from the high 40s to the mid 30s. Mid 30s doesn’t sound so bad until you’re riding in it with soggy “Waterproof” gear. The electric jacket liner kept my torso warm, but my thighs, hands and feet were cold enough that they were hurting. I had to stop a few times just to walk around and get the blood pumping so that my hands and feet would start working normally. I stopped at the Welcome Center just north of the Tennessee/Kentucky border. I went inside and just found reasons to stay inside and soak up the heat and get my feet moving like they should for a while. When I went out to my bike, there was a pickup with a Harley dresser in the back and the driver and I talked a bit. Then the truck left and I was zipping up my jacket when I turned around and saw my brother David standing there. He had gone to Dollywood for a couple of days and was on his way home and he parked in the spot right next to my bike. That’s one of those amazing coincidences that make me go Hmmm. Both of us hitting the same rest area at the same time and getting parking spaces beside each other. I think the odds of that happening are on the order of the odds of me winning the Lottery. David and I talked for a couple of minutes and he took a few pictures of me with his phone; then he went inside and I got back out on the highway. As I went north, I found the heaviest rain of the trip. I had less than 200 miles to go and it took me almost five hours. I had to stop just south of Lexington and sit in a Starbucks for about 45 minutes drinking a Flat White coffee and letting my feet stop hurting. I got home and immediately took a long, hot shower. I fixed Hot Dogs and Beans for dinner and just vegged out. I went to bed at 9:00. Now; I’m wide awake at 2:30 and writing this. I’ll tire soon and get some more sleep and in the morning, life will get back to normal. It really feels good to be home. (Message edited by Crusty on March 13, 2023) |

Nothing Says Easter Like... Nothing says Easter like an Electronic Yodelling Pickle. It really is one of the most absurd gifts that I’ve ever received; but I honestly like it a lot! I can’t stop playing it. I got it along with such interesting items as a bottle of Enchilada flavored soda, a bottle of High Mountain Huckleberry soda, a Superman light switch plate, a Glow-In-The-Dark Mary night light, a pair of Hostess Twinkie Boxer Briefs, a pound of Drunkin Chocolate Covered Strawberry flavored coffee (I HATE flavored coffee) and more candy than I know what to do with. Actually, that last is not true. I’m going to put all the candy in a gallon ziplock bag and bring it to the AA meeting. The folks there will enjoy it, I think and I’ll be happy to not have it here. It may be easy to say, “Well, just don’t eat it!”; but it’s about as possible to do that as to tell a hungry dog to stop eating that big pile of meat that’s in front of him. Now that I think of it, I'll bring the coffee there as well. Maybe somebody there will like it. After my visit with the Orthopedic Doc, the other day, I stopped at Wassler meats and asked one of the butchers there for a 1 Pound Ribeye steak. He cut it at 1.3 pounds, and I told him that it was fine; I’d take it. Now; there’s no way I can eat that much steak without getting sick, so what I’ve decided to do is cut it before I cook it. I’ll have the bigger portion for dinner today, and the rest for dinner tomorrow. I’ve had one person give me grief because I wanted to eat the same thing two days in a row, but I had pizza for dinner on Friday, then had the leftover pizza for breakfast yesterday. I LOVE cold pizza for breakfast and I planned it when I decided to get a pizza for dinner the evening before. A 7- or 8-ounce steak would make a great Monday dinner, even if I had the same thing on Easter Sunday. Maybe on Monday, I’ll switch things up and have roasted Spuds instead of mashed. Or maybe a different vegetable side dish; asparagus today and antioxidant blend tomorrow. We’ll see. Now; since my last Snippet was a non- Motorcycle epistle, I guess I should make this one a little different. I went ahead and bought a three gallon gas can. When I saw that it’s 235 miles between gas stations on the Dempster Highway, I decided to play it safe and get the bigger gas can. That will give me 7-1/2 gallons of gas, and that should be an ample amount. If I get 45 MPG, that will get me 335 miles before I run dry. That will hopefully be a reasonable margin. I remember when I was leaving Roundup, Montana heading north towards Malta, in 2015. The sign said it was 145 miles to the next gas and my 3.3 tank would only give me 135 at best. So I turned west and went to Lewistown, where I bought a 1 gallon gas can and I filled the gas tank and the gas can, so I had enough fuel. That’s when I decided to put a 4.5 gas tank on the Roadster. I’ve never regretted that decision. And after a short spell of getting used to the different appearance of the bike, I think the bike looks better with the bigger tank. I have friends who prefer the classic shape of the smaller gas tanks, but I really prefer the look and capacity of the 4.5. Also; my Dunflop Trailmax Missions arrived on Friday. I like how they look, and I want to put them on the Express now; but I think it would be smarter to hold off a bit. After all; it’s only early April and I’m not heading out until Memorial Day Weekend. I don’t ride like a squid, so I’m pretty hopeful that the tires will last for the entire ride and hopefully a good bit more, but I don’t want to push things. Well; I hope you all have a wonderful Easter Sunday. (Message edited by Crusty on April 09, 2023) (Message edited by Crusty on April 09, 2023) |

Day One This is going to be a good trip. I can tell by the way this first day has gone. I went through the checklist of things that I needed to do and did them all in order. I set the temperature on the thermostat so that when I get back, all I'll have to do is turn the switch on; I opened the bathroom window, so that the house can breathe; I put the bag of trash out to the curb and I locked the garage door (after moving the Express outside) and disconnected the electric opener from the power. Then I put the root killer in the basement toilet. Then the toilet backed up. I spent the next half hour using a plunger to get the clog clear. The toilet finally seemed to flush normally, so I put on my jacket and helmet and gloves and headed out. I made my way over to I-74 and headed west. I had just crossed into Indiana when I realized that I'd forgotten my phone. So I turned around at the next exit and went back home to get it. While at the house, I went down to the basement and flushed the toilet once more. It worked like it should. Then I set out again with the phone in it's pouch. Everything was running smoothly, despite running a couple of hours late until I hit Indianapolis. Just as I-74 and I-465 met, traffic stopped. It took me about 45 minutes to travel a dozen miles or so. Things improved as soon as I got on I-70; but then things came to a halt a couple of miles before a Construction Zone at the Illinois border. It was another hour of slip the clutch and go 4 MPH for a few hundred feet, then stop for a few minutes at a time. I kept an eye on the shadow of a truck a few cars ahead of me. When it wasn't moving, I'd hit the kill switch, so the engine wouldn't overheat. Now; I was even further behind schedule. I was planning to camp at the Katy Roundhouse Campground in Franklin. MO. I needed to get Off I-70 at Exit 106. However; around mile 140 or so, I started getting visuals for a Migraine. That would have been bad enough; but the sun was in my eyes and it was almost blinding, all by itself. To cut to the chase, US route 40 was closed and when I tried to find the campground on my own, I struck out. The sun was almost down as I found my way back towards I-70 when I saw a Super 8 sign; so I pulled in and got a room. That's where I am right now. At the Super 8 Motel in Booneville, Missouri. When I finish typing this, I'm going to sack out. I figure today was a good thing. I'm getting all my bad luck out of the way now, so the rest of the trip will go a lot better. Now, I can relax and let my headache fade while I sleep. I tried to get a picture of my odometer when it turned over to 30,000 miles, but my crappy little point & shoot couldn't do any better than a faint blur. Oh, well; I still managed to put in almost 500 miles. And I'm as far west as I was planning to get today.} (Message edited by Crusty on May 24, 2023) |

Cold Rain I made it to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado this afternoon after pushing through Missouri and Kansas. I'm in a motel again. There are scattered showers all around me and there's no such thing as warm rain in Colorado. I was just about to get soaked when I spotted this motel and I made a quick executive decision. In other words, I wimped out. Today went a lot smoother than yesterday did. Traffic wasn't that bad and I was able to maintain a mostly steady speed at, or slightly above, the Speed Limit. I did that for a couple of reasons. I want my tires to last the whole trip and higher speed wears them out faster and there were a whole lot of State Revenue Enhancement personnel along the way. So far, there have been many in each State I've been in. I guess they're warming up for the Holiday Weekend. Back in 2005, Terri (my Ex) and I rode our bikes out to Colorado. We discovered a real gem of a restaurant in Russell, Kansas called Meridy's and we had dinner there. Since we were staying in a motel up the road for the night, we went back to Meridy's for breakfast. Both meals were way above average. That stayed in my memory, so I made it a point to stop there for lunch today. After that many years, anything was possible. The restaurant may have changed hands or it may have changed cooks or it may even have gone out of business. It's still in business and the food is still very good and reasonably priced. I'm glad I stopped there. As I was getting ready to leave, the waitress told me that the next time I come back, I should try the Chicken Fried Steak. I don't know when I'll be back again, but I bet I'll remember that if I do manage to get back again. Nice people, nice prices and good food. I recommend it as worth stopping for. Well; I'm in for the evening. I'll probably send this out in the morning if I can find a Golden Starches with WiFi. Cold Fog I'm in Colorado Springs having an expensive Flat White coffee in a Starbucks type coffee shop.I left the really crappy motel at about 6:00 AM. I took Gargle's route to Colorado Springs and boy, it's over some crappy road. I was sunny when I left the motel; but I could see the thick layer of fog between me and the mountains. I had to stop when I first turned onto State Rt. 94 and put on my sweatshirt. Now, I'm thinking I might put on my electric jacket liner and my winter gloves. I don't recognize Colorado Springs any more. I found my way to Route 115, but nothing is like it was when I lived here in the 70s. There are two Space Force bases here that I never heard of, as well as the other military bases. I think that makes five or six in all. The city has grown until I don't know most of the major streets and roads. Well; I've finished my coffee. I'll be in Cedaredge by tonight. |

In Cedaredge I made it to Susan's House around dinnertime yesterday. it was sunny and in the 80s when I arrived, but I encountered rain, snow, thunderstorms and temperatures ranging from mid-40s to mid-80s along the way. I left the Black Bear Coffee Shop in Colorado Springs and headed south on Rt.115. The sun came out within 10 miles and it immediately started warming up. By the time I got to US Rt. 50, I was feeling pretty comfortable. I followed Rt.50 west and stopped in Salida and got lunch at a Macca's. It was warm enough that I took off my sweatshirt, then I continued west. The sky was darkening as I approached Monarch Pass, so I got smart and pulled into a Chain-Up area and put the rain liner in my jacket as well as putting on my sweatshirt again. I also put on my winter gloves. I didn't put on my rain pants, which turned out to be a mistake. I was on my way up the pass when big raindrops began hitting me. The rain got heavier for a while, then became snow as my elevation increased. Once over the summit, the snow turned back to rain; thgen the rain quit altogether and the sun reappeared. There were a few scattered very dark clouds that were visibly raining, but there was sun on me. As I pulled into Gunnison, a very large cloud that had several bolts of lightning hitting the ground was directly in my path, so I pulled into another Micky D's and got a coffee and an apple pie to wait it out. After the storm passed, I continued west until I hit a construction zone. All the westbound traffic was stopped and there were no eastbound vehicles on the road. I stopped at 2:20 (I looked at my watch). We sat until 3:15 when I saw a string of vehicles coming east towards us. There were 118 cars, trucks and motorcycles (I counted them) that passed me, then the westbound traffic got to go, There was only one lane open and our speed varied from stopped to a pulse quicking 23 MPH. It took a while to get through the construction, then the race was on. Frustrated drivers were looking to pass and make up time; timid drivers from the flat lands were driving beyond their abilities, trying to get the yahoos off their tails, and it was all happening on very twisty mountain pass roads. I had taken off my sweatshirt and swapped my winter gloves for my thin gloves while I was waiting at the Construction site, and that was a good thing. I finally made my way into Montrose, where I got gas, then found my way to Cedaredge and Susan's house. I really like the dry climate here. It gets hot during the day, but cools down into the 40s at night which makes for really good sleeping. I don't know when I'll be able to send this out. Susan doesn't have internet. I'll have to hit a McDonald's or the Public Library or someplace with Wee-Fee or somethin' to send it out. Just so you know, today is Friday May 26. Today, we're going out to see some of the area, and I think we're stopping for BBQ at a local joint. If it's any good, I'll let everybody know. |
