I was once a progressive rock snob, until my sister turned me on to punk.
Sturgeon's Law still applied, of course, but there was some great stuff happening to change the "same old" mold of Commercial Music. Then grunge, European metal, etc.
Unfortunately we also had the Balkanization of music into tiny slices, where radio stations tried to appeal to specific demographic slices, like 13-15 year old girls and 12-14 year old wanna be gangsta boys who admire pimps.
And Metal splintered into too many shards to keep track of. Thrash, Scandinavian, fantasy, for all I know, Care Bears...
But there's some great stuff out there.
And music reaction videos offer a chance At an introduction to new bands you otherwise never would have heard.
I'm fond of The Charismatic Voice lady, voice coach, redhead, who gets so excited about great singing...
While I'm not going to stop loving Kansas, Heart, Rush, etc., I'm expanding my listening to some great new stuff...
And thought we might share.
I turned my neighbor ( blue collar construction guy, metal head ) onto The HU band. "Ever hear Mongolian Metal?" Now it's not unusual to hear Wolf Totem blasting from his garage/bar/pool room.
And there's some weird, wonderful stuff out there!
And the "Whole Lotta Love" reaction...title says it all. "Whelp, that's sexual"
Reaction videos are a weird mirror way to share stuff you like with people.
I see a lot of "kid raised on rap and lousy 2000s music" reactions to Rush, ( "It's Only 3 guys!!??!!" ) and Led Zeppelin ( " holy @#$% this is poetry! Modern music sucks! ") etc.
So it's nice to see new stuff that doesn't follow the herd.
In a music scene where typical female pop songs are all "my boyfriend left me & I'm totally sad" ( to the point they joke they can't wait until the next breakup & Taylor Swift album ) It's nice to hear songs like "Evolve" that I can easily imagine gets played really loud in a helicopter at low altitude on the way to blowing up stuff.
A band playing it's own music... on the Rockband game.
Fun fan fact, the girls got started playing Rockband, as little kids, then moved on to the Real Deal. It's got to hard switching from a Spector Bass to a game controller....
To be fair, I'll try not to fanboy/dirty old man out on this band, but dang, it's hard. I bought all the available CD's and managed to get "Queen Of The Murder Scene" on Vinyl for a friend's daughter. ( he gave her his old Vinyl collection.... and wanted to turn her on to the band )
I think this is my Favorite live performance video so far, it's a Great Venue, and a full house of fans, no doubt, in Mexico City.
Like many others, the first thing I noticed about The Warning was the Drummer. A drummer that sings is a Rare ( Earth ) thing. One that plays like the Unholy fusion of Neil Peart, Keith Moon, and Animal from the Muppets, AND sings? DAmn.
Then, I noticed how freaking SOLID the bass player is. Fingering. With a Spector 5 string and Orange amps... And, not a thump, thump, garage band bass player... The Band's Wall of sound comes from complex counter harmony underlaying the guitar. And the slides! Plus, sings.
Then I finally noticed the Lead singer, guitar, and Rock Goddess. ( Oh, I Noticed her right away, I'm talking musical appreciation. ) And, DAmn. A Voice, that can belt it out with Lzzy Hale and Metallica, or softly rip your heart out. I'm quite impressed with her guitar work, she rocks a variety of really, really nice axes, ( see band website for models ) can thrash ( see Tedx talk video, "Survive" 'nuff said... and she was 16. ) just plain Play, and uses a foot pedal Control panel to get so many voices out of it. again, DAmn.
Finally I get the Gestalt, the Band, the Social Media, the package. Good music, hope they succeed.
and when I went to look at bass guitars, the Spector Artist pages are full of posed pictures of undoubtedly talented players with their axes. There's a few concert pics, but mostly it's a musician staring into the camera.
Haven't heard it yet. Did enjoy a few hours of film on the Beatles edited by Peter Jackson. Guy is a great film maker.
There's a Y-tuber, "Wings of Pegasus" ( ha! ) British musician who does reaction videoes, who has comments on autotune vs. effects boxes, ( like fuzz box or Sustain ) and some might find his reviews interesting technically. ( especially sound guys )
I don't have the proper appreciation for male county singer subtleties, can't tell one from another, but I also have figured out over the years I must have an auditory processing issue with lyrics my whole life. Decades of "oh, is that what they said?".
There's a tribute band, Zepparella. Not bad for a tribute band. But seeing them on video, it's the first time I've understood several songs.
