My Honda Fit got totalled out by an errant USAA insured driver last month and getting a proper settlement has been a real headache.

On top of taking weeks to properly file the claim...these dirty bastards...particularly Katarina at the USAA Southeast regional office...have taken it upon themselves to categorize my aftermarket parts...which I painstakingly found invoices for every dollar spent...as "refurbishment" parts which only allowed for a $248 payout out of $2800 in parts. To top it all off they cancelled my rental car today and backdated it several days. Unbelievable.

Insurance companies are the devil.

Insurance companies exist for only one purpose: To take in as much money as they possibly can and pay out as little as necessary.

There isn't one who won't screw you in a heartbeat if it saves them any money at all.

If you want them to pay what they should, get a good lawyer. He'll get a third of your settlement, but 2/3 is a hell of a lot more than you'll get without him (or her-I don't want to sound sexist).

Yep. Hate to say it. Lawyer up. It’s the only way you’ll get your due.

I've had good experiences with Progressive. Never felt shafted with them (though it's pretty unfair to be considered a new driver after nearly two decades on motorcycles). I worked with them closely in the motorcycle industry and they were always fair and accommodating.

Here it was, "sure, show invoices of your parts and it will be covered," then,"psyche."

Insurance did a back-date and shortage on the rental car that I had called and got approved before keeping it. I called them on it and they cut a check right away.

I've never had an issue with either State Farm (car) or Progressive (motorcycle) but I've also seen what THEY have to put up with. Back in 2018 when I got struck by a car 150 feet from my house the police told me that since my bike was lying in the street they had to call a tow company to bring it to my house (which, I might remind you, was only 150 feet from my house). When I got out of the hospital I saw the bill the towing company submitted to Progressive. It included a TOLL FEE!!! There is NO toll booth between the gas station where I was hit and my house 150 feet away. Also, the towing company was based in my town and there are NO toll booths ANYWHERE where I live. WTF?? I know I didn't have to pay for it, but JESUS!! And they get away with this shit???

Allstate screwed me over once. An elderly lady hit my PARKED car in a parking lot. Allstate refused to cover the full damages. The Good Hands People indeed.

State Farm however was Aces when my house was struck by lightning and caught on fire.

I have long been AMAZED at what insurance companies get away with. Back in 1988 I had traded in my VW Rabbit convertible for a 1988 Subaru GL Turbo Station wagon. Allstate wouldn't insure it because it was turbo-charged!! I asked them if they'd insure a Mustang CVO and the agent proudly told me he could give me a very good rate on one. So then I asked him: "Just so I understand you... you'll insure a 300HP sports car, but you won't insure a 120HP STATION WAGON????" That's when I dropped Allstate and switched to State Farm and I never looked back.

Yeah. I was just on the phone with the claims manager trying to justify giving me $248 for $2806 in parts.

What manner of butt holery is this???

I was like, "ma'am, I've worked closely with Progressive Insurance for eight years. Nothing personal, but they would have covered these parts if the policy allowed without providing for invoices by simply looking at the actual parts and looking up their market value."

I've also found it extremely necessary to remember every word said.

"I was told my rental was secured until this date."

"I was told that if I could produce invoices that it would be covered."

Then from then it's, "let me check your state insurance laws to see if that's applicable." C'mon.

I was told that my parts were preferential and that alloy wheels don't typically add value. Yeah. That's not good enough. I want to be fairly compensated for my parts that I purchased only eighteen months ago.

Today after another fruitless call I was told that my parts are not eligible for reimbursement under C.C.C...IE property that isn't in the care, custody, or control of the insured...which is damage not related to the actual vehicle, but the property in it. What ridiculousness. I filed a complaint case with the Georgia Department of Insurance.

In your case the TOLL FEE means the towing company driver used toll route to reach the location of your motorcycle. It does not necessary mean thar there is a toll route between the location of your motorcycle and the place where they towed your motorcycle.

I use State Farm. I claimed once after somebody attempted to steal my car and significantly damaged two left doors. They covered the repair the shop performed according to their policy without issues.

If you install aftermarket parts on your vehicle and if you want them to be insured it is probably a good idea to ask your insurance company how they deal with it. The insurance company may ask you to give them information about value of those parts so they will adjust you vehicle insurance price accordingly and include those aftermarket parts into insurance policy.

For instance my custom Buell XB value is probably around $50000 (labor and parts) but if it will be totaled or damaged they will cover it like it is only in stock form because of I did not declare them the valuable changes I did for this vehicle.

USAA is supposed to cover "custom parts and equipment" for up to $5,000 on a standard policy. Also they said they would cover it with invoices as documentation. They didn't deny my claim as to the monetary value. They're denying it on the grounds that my parts are supposedly not custom equipment by erroneously categorizing them as first "refurbishment" parts, then disregarded as simple "personal preference" accoutrements, and finally recategorizing them as simply unrelated personal property. It is all a pretty blatant ploy to avoid paying anything more than the replacement cost of the vehicle itself.

Ultimately I am the claimant...and I wish I had just gone through my own insurance company (Progressive). They would have offered more for the car and given me the maximum allowable value for my parts without such drama.

I live in the village of Hicksville (yes, that's really the name). The police called the Hicksville towing company located IN HICKSVILLE. There are no tolls ANYWHERE in the village. They scammed the insurance company.

In my case here, since I can't afford to keep this rental forever, I may accept their settlement under protest and get the rest settled in small claims court.

I drove a rollback for a little while. When the driver gets dispatched, he is not always at the yard. I got paid all the miles from where ever I was with the truck when I got dispatched. That could sometimes be 200 miles away. They always tried to get the closest truck. If I was in Chicago, guess what?
