Hmmm... apparently Chris Rock jumped the shark in allowing himself a joke at Will Smith's wife's expense, and he paid for it. Can't say I blame Will at all for his response, but it was nonetheless a shit-show. Chris Rock might call himself lucky that Will didn't summon/remember Ali at that moment. There is humor... in good taste, questionable, off-beat, sketchy, and bad taste. All along the range, but Chris Rock should have given more of a shit about what he says of a man's wife. | ||

Great entertainment should by all means be recognized as such... the behavior of both Rock and Smith has blemished the process now. Will Smith was out of line. They are all entertainers, they are all in the public spotlight, they know these jokes are coming and should be able to handle them. It is part and parcel with being in that industry. If Smith was offended by Chris Rock, he should have sought a private audience and asked him man to man to refrain from those jokes. This is not a case of some guy maliciously cracking a bad joke about a guy's wife on the street corner. This is not two known enemies going after one another. This was one entertainer making fun of another one at an awards show. The joke, while in poor taste, is to be expected and inline with other jokes I've seen and heard at these award shows. Shows that are intentionally a public spectacle. Will Smith assaulted someone on live T.V. It was an illegal act broadcasted for the whole world to see. It showed once again the rules for thee, but not for me, mentality of the Hollywood Elite. If that was a common person they most likely would have been arrested, charged with assault, and vilified in the press. | ||

Mrs Smith is an actress, and has a hair loss condition ( medical ) Women are very sensitive about issues relating to their appearance, Ms Smith was most likely hurt and offended, Her husband decided to inflict some pain on her offender. I understand why, I wonder if he will be charged. As hard as he slapped rock If he would have hit him with a closed fist, rock would have needed medical attention.. There are some things that common sense and decency mark as off limits in some venues. I think a joke about a medical condition ( hair loss ) was out of bounds. | ||

M had NO idea what had transpired, until the evening news today... I had to kinda explain it to her. Will Smith is, maybe was, one of her favorite actors, and rightly so. I/we can be glib in our observations of it, but, we should take the impact seriously. Pun intended. Civil society, civil discourse. There was once an honored tradition of doing a celebrity roast... one must do a dance on the razor's edge of good/bad taste to succeed there. I have always loved watching the Oscars ceremony... and I've always appreciated the significance of it all. Too bad... maybe, in a better world, next year we could see them all hosting the Oscars together. Of course, I'll not hold my breath for that wish. | ||

Hey Brad good on your sis for helping the Afgani women. Watching Ukraine getting pummeled by Russia after Clinton promised to help in the event of trouble .. The slap is not important, This morning WS appears to have apologized. I think that as you point out about civil society, at times some need to be reminded that a little tact goes along way. Will has been a bit unhinged lately, methinks. Jada and Will Smith have an open marriage...meaning she is open and he values their marriage. The details of her exploits are all but public knowledge. He has been on social media posting passive aggressive relationship and personal advice that sounds like the regurgitations of his therapy sessions. His problem is likely that the joke has been on him for some time. That kind of stress can't be healthy. | ||

I and M have always LOVED Will Smith. Jada also, and myself, Chris Rock. All brilliant minds, but like all, tested by stress and time. Will shouldn't have slapped Chris, but... we all human beings are fallible. Celebrity carries a HUGE toll on one's humanity, one's daily life. Feet of clay, and so goes the golden Oscar. The trendy term is polyamorous, these days. I don't know. It's hard enough to keep up relations with one person let alone more. My girlfriend and I have known and been pursued by such people/couples and that does not appeal to us in the slightest. I can kinda understand the draw, but such relationships are always really messy all around.  Usually, it seems, the most desirable partner has everything to gain and everyone else is a loser. | ||
