I took the old man, who is 80, to the ER yesterday. He pulled a temperature of 100.4 and the advice nurse on the telephone thought he should come into the ER for evaluation. A room became available after a short wait. I could accompany him since I am his caregiver. The rooms next to us were completely sealed with plastic with a zipper door for entry. There were 3 Covid patients inside. Doctors and nurses and techs scrambled in and out but were surprisingly professional. They took Xrays and pictures and asked countless questions and gave him a Covid test.
About 8 hours later they said his Covid test was negative, but he had mild pneumonia. They couldn't immediately determine the source of the infection causing the fever, but were confident that continued broad spectrum antibiotics would kill it. His temperature had already fallen to 98.5 but since his temperature normally runs about 96.5, he decided to stay the weekend upstairs in the hospital. I had to leave because the pandemic has closed the upstairs rooms to all visitors. But it looks like everything can be patched up, he just has to endure a lonely weekend of hospital food.
I had pneumonia some years back, it wasn't fun. Since then I've had the vaccine. I was surprised, first, that there was a vaccine, and second, that it's not given out like tetanus or flu shots, considering how many die each year from pneumonia. Turns out it is given widely, I or the kids were just not the right age to be aware of it coming out.
A little research shows (at least) 2 different types of vaccine, and like any drug or vaccination, do your own research, RTFM, and YMMV.
And, just because...life, I got a call from a buddy who had visited me last Sunday, and someone his wife works with was tested positive or was ill from Pooh's Breath, so I'm on voluntary sparkling isolation for another week.
The worst part is wondering if I should go to the Inauguration.
There's been a long time "movement" to have the Big Apple separated from the rest of the state, because of political differences.
For decades, the excuse not to is basically that The City pays a huge amount of taxes, because of Wall Street and all the billionaires. And that the creation of a new State would ruin Presidential election & some imagined balance in Congress.
At the current rate of the diaspora the first excuse may be gone soon. Some of the Wall Street companies are seriously considering moving much of their operations to Florida where the taxes and tyranny are much less. If you can't meet up to get that insider gossip in restaurants, why not work from home? & Home doesn't have to be in the same hemisphere.
The other side effect of Pooh's Breath might be in school choice. There's no reason not to be a teacher in Yuma giving classes to kids in Fairbanks and Albany. So many people are realizing that without the babysitting function that lets you have both parents work, the Old Schoolhouse is obsolete. Why not have your kids take science classes from NASA & Boeing? And philosophy from Hillsdale? And history from Cambridge?
With ratings, competition for excellence, and all the other things Unions hate.
As British New Gestapo obedient police use drones to track and coordinate a strike on England's Greatest Enemy, I don't like it.
Walking your dog alone in a public forest shouldn't get you arrested by armed men unless you don't pick up after your dog, in which case I suggest the stocks. ( The Enemy was walking the puppy, in case I wasn't clear )
Note this is the same Department of Law Avoidance that refused to stop major rape, slavery, prostitution rings that they knew were operating in their towns, raping and murdering their children. ( But only the poorer folk, so it was more important to be PC )
4 more days of sparkling isolation. They won't test me because here in the Empire there aren't enough tests for health care workers, per the Health care worker. ( Secretary/PA )
At least, insurance won't cover it. If I want to spend a few hundred dollars out of pocket, then I can get tested, and at this time the error rate is determined by Cuomo's Whim of the day. So it's just self abuse, and indulgent selfishness for zero good & straining the system.
Reading my seasonal backlog of magazines and reducing the unread book pile, ( 5 down in 10 days... But ordered another... ) with cleaning and new exercise between.
So, basically, typical January.
And the news tells me that at current rates it will take longer to vaccinate NYC than it took to develop the vaccine. Thanks to the Governor's policy, preparing for the vaccine distribution and administration would have been contrary to the refusal to admit Trump did anything good, ever.
Just to be clear, I wear my mask for reasons previously mentioned. But an Executive Order? Heck, any Order to wear masks when not in close contact, raise hackles.
Walmart? Heck yes. Some days I want a Rascal suit. The bathroom at my local one needs napalm. ( imho )
Question: I've been wondering when does the 'Covid season' end? Every year, there are comparisons to the previous 'flu season'. Or "this years flu season is expected to be worse than..." type of stories. Never is it expected to be better BTW. Or the "2012 measles outbreak in..."
But for some reason, this just keeps going on and on with no reset date.
Remember when they said we wouldn't have a vaccine in under a year?
At current rates, everyone that wants in the U.S. should be vaccinated in a year.
Current rates are temporary and will change. As emphasis, funding, and production ramp up & down, so will rates. Note that 2 of the 3 affect the third and are Political.
New York... I work as a local Code Officer for 2 towns near the Canadian border. Last Friday I took down an old church that was a hazard due to structural issues and general rot, it was built in 1880.
During the demo, mask on, doing my job I was standing outside, 4 feet away with the wind to my face standing next to the property owner watching the excavator. It was a great clean demolition.
Monday morning I get a call from the owner, he is very sick and heading to the local hospital, can't breathe. Now he is in Covid isolation in the hospital, I was contacted by Public Health and put in quarantine startin Tuesday. I felt fine all day into the evening and retired for the night.
Woke up at 4AM yesterday, stomach was insane pain, dry hacking cough, nose turned into a snot generator. Head felt like my eyeballs were taking inside laps and my brain hurt. Went through a box of tissues in 6 hours, puked.... got the crap.....
Our fine Governor did not put Code Officers on the list for vacine, we were supposed to do our jobs. No County updates on quarantine residences under HIPPA, I was bound to come into contact before even getting an option on the new vacine.... over 65, First Responder...
This AM I get a letter from the County to get me to enforce Cuomo's dictates and enforce edicts. Just called the head of the County Legislators and told him to kiss my ass....
...could it be a simple case of old-building-dust-crap? Lord only knows what something like that houses, after 141 years. I used to run a 1920s vaudeville house (1600 seat live theatre - fly gallery, attic crawl spaces for front-of-house lighting, old boilers for heat, etc), and anytime we disturbed a new area (renovations, annual light bulb changes in chandeliers...) I'd come down with some sort of head muck.
I hope you feel better, but don't jump on the bandwagon and automatically assume COVID.
