The story goes from Popular Science... V.P. of ViceGrip was at a tool convention in Taiwan. He has a habit of visiting hardware stores to see if his products are selling & get feedback. Tiny little shop in Taipei, the front window has the entire ViceGrip display board! He walks around, & it's all good quality tools, his, Craftsman, Channellock, etc. He asked the shop owner why there weren't any cheap tools for sale. The reply? " "Only in America can people afford to buy tools that don't work". |

Gotta drop my 2 cents on SnapOn. I have spent around $3k a year on the magic truck for the last few years. I pay a premium for a weekly visit and the generous warranty replacement for anything broken. My rep never charges any interest if I don’t pay in full which is rare. He also has some really good jerky at a fair price. One of the few things I look forward to on Monday is spending a few minutes on the magic truck. At the end of the year I get a full list of my purchases for tax purposes. He understands that as a small shop I don’t always buy something but he still stops on Monday. Z |

Why would anybody buy a Rolls Royce when they could get around just as well in a Hyundai? I prefer Snap on wrenches to any other brand. |

Many Craftsman brand hand tools were made in Colorado Springs by Western Forge, look for the "WF" stamped or molded into the tool. In 2010 or so, concurrent to the loss of Sears, and the spread of Craftsman into other stores like Ace Hdwe, WF was bought up my Ideal Industries. Craftsman didn't renew the contract with WF, so Ideal shut it down. Ideal also bought S-K at about the same time as WF. |

BTW, all of the big 4 - SnapOn, Mac, Matco and Cornwell have trucks wandering around here, SnapOn is the only one that stops. I did drop in on the Cornwell truck once, bought a pair of specialty electrical pliers that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. Z |

I haven't quite gotten to replacing garage items lost in the fire and subsequent break ins, but I wondered about the Craftsman warranty. It looks like their warranty is still in place "for most hand tools." I think Lowe's will only replace Craftsman tools which were purchased from them. https://www.craftsman.com/customer-care/warranty-i nformation |

Last time I tried to get a replacement for a Craftsman tool, they wanted a receipt. This was for a torque wrench that is about 25 years old an the lock doesn't. Like I still have the receipt for that.... BTW Snap-on HQ is in Kenosha, yes, that Kenosha. Whether they are still MADE there IDK, but I used to know one of their maintenance mechanics. He had a whole set of unchromed box ends. |

At the time that Boluva Accutron was sold it was far more expensive than other watches I don't cheap out on something like a watch, which will be on my wrist all day, every day. A steering wheel puller gets used once. The "tool guy" at Lowe's told me that they honor all Craftsman warranties for HAND tools - not power tools. I have no idea if he actually speaks for the company. |

The "hand" tool thing was a change in Crafstman policy years ago, even at Sears...like...the late 90s. They used to warranty EVERYthing, then it went to "hand tools". For a while there I had trouble getting warranty on ratchet drives, they were crying "moving parts" as an excuse to call it a "power tool" but I think they moved past that after enough people bitched about it. |

I saw a video on youtube about returning old Craftsman at Lowes, they have a handy flip chart of what is and what is not covered. Anything that isn't clear is supposed to be a phone call to figure it out. Basically all hand tools are supposed to be covered. You are going to get a made in China replacement, and that replacement may not be any better than Harbor Freight Pittsburg Pro quality. I snapped a lot of Kobalt tools in the last few years, and HF is closer and cheaper to get something of similar quality. Haven't had to return anything to HF yet, that might say something. I also have some old Stanley tools, and a few newer Stanley tools. They are decent and supposed to have lifetime warranty. And none of these will probably last very long with someone who makes their living using this kind of tool. Stuff breaks, but the big brand stuff seems to put up a better fight, and a more consistently longer fight. |

Those of you who have camped with me at TWoS know I usually signal my presence for the duration of my stay by leaving a hatchet in the stump by the creek.
Bought it at Harbor Freight for $5.00 almost 25 years ago. I've sharpened it on my bench grinder a bunch of times, and it gets left out in the weather a lot. The handle is not loose, cracking or dried out. Just saying. |

“I'm pretty sure that Fortune Cookies are not made in China” Not even the concept of fortune cookies. They are entirely an American invention. |

If you ever see a bottle of Blanton’s bourbon, try it. Hands down my favorite. One of the original small batch distillers. Pricier than my regular spirits but similar price to Stranahans. Best I’ve ever tasted, neat in an old fashioned.

Yes. Getting hard to find sometimes. It’s a wheatie, made by buffalo trace. Guess what other wheaties are made by buffalo trace? Pappy. Weller reserve. Weller 107. My guess is it all starts out as weller reserve, the blantons is barrel select, the 107 is cask, and the pappy’s is 107 aged a little longer. If you haven’t tried, weller reserve, give it a taste. At $22 a fifth, it’s the best deal out there imho. |
