...doesn't rate anywhere near the fearmongering...
Agreed. In fact, if I wasn't publicly posting this, I might rant on the solutions available for the PROVEN biggest threat to human life for over a century. ( omelets, eggs, by any means necessary....)
And, just to be mean... But to the globe as a whole? Nah is absolutely true. In fact the Greenie Radical view is 99.9% less humans is necessary to Save The World. ( except them. And their servants. )
However, I AM Certain People. And more importantly, to me, so is my 84 year old mother.
So if you want to burn the fearmonger Elite Dictators at the stake, my objections are the air pollution! ( better used to make electricity for the third world in clean incinerators with cogeneration power production. ) ( joke, right? )
You want to open the Theaters? Yea! Etc.
After all, we're past the Two Weeks we were told were needed to flatten the curve. And that succeeded! Let's be safe and say that everything shut down since May has been hysterical exploitation and unjustified by Facts.
I'm still going to call bull on political spin no matter the leaning. And I'm still going to call for being concerned about our most at risk citizens.
The herd immunity discussion is becoming fascinating. The term has only applied before to vaccination and a population that's already been culled for decades or centuries by some killer disease, like smallpox. That's why the smart guys ( the non-political ones you don't hear from today ) at the CDC freak a bit when there's an outbreak from some third world hell as immigrants come here.
Pooh's Breath has no available vaccine yet, has only been killing people since November? And only a "worse than average flu, but not nearly as bad as the 1918 pandemic" death toll. So if Sweden or Long Island is already protected by herd immunity , then we don't understand it well, yet.
I agree with your comments above. Yes, we need to protect those potentially at risk...but not at the cost we're currently experiencing. You can't sacrifice 99% of humanity, for the percieved (key word, there) safety of the other 1%. It's just stupid.
I, too, have an 84 year old mother. Lives alone in Florida. And I, too, am concerned. She's healthy as a horse - daily tennis, daily walks, and when it rains she's in the gym. Church choir, community chorus, gardening. And...she's onery as hell, no disease will have her! But, I still worry. Less about COVID, though, and more about cancel-culture bullshit, riots (they're tearing down statues in her town now), and police de-funding. I'm a decent shot...but 830 miles is a bit much when it comes to defending my own mother!
The more I think on it, the more I concur with the theory I saw that people (areas/populations) are showing indifference to the virus because it IS a relative to the common cold.
"Coronavirus" is not new. They've been here for millenia. They cause - among others - the common, good ol', COLD.
}Common human coronaviruses, including types 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold. Most people get infected with one or more of these viruses at some point in their lives.
Of course, it's the CDC, so that is followed by the vague threat:
This information applies to common human coronaviruses and should not be confused with coronavirus disease 2019 (formerly referred to as 2019 Novel Coronavirus).
with absolutely NO explanation as to why.
Our bodies already "know" coronaviruses, and people who don't get colds (we all know them) are likely less susceptible to THIS coronavirus as well.
But the CDC will never admit that...they're too politicised by now.
The rest of that page, though? Fairly good information about what "A coronavirus" is:
Symptoms of common human coronaviruses: runny nose sore throat headache fever cough general feeling of being unwell Human coronaviruses can sometimes cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. This is more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease, people with weakened immune systems, infants, and older adults.
Transmission of common human coronaviruses Common human coronaviruses usually spread from an infected person to others through the air by coughing and sneezing close personal contact, like touching or shaking hands touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands
In the United States, people usually get infected with common human coronaviruses in the fall and winter, but you can get infected at any time of the year. Young children are most likely to get infected, but people can have multiple infections in their lifetime.
Preventing viral respiratory infections
Protect yourself from getting sick
wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands avoid close contact with people who are sick
Protect others when you are sick
stay home while you are sick avoid close contact with others cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing clean and disinfect objects and surfaces
Treatment for common human coronaviruses There is no vaccine to protect you against human coronaviruses and there are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by human coronaviruses. Most people with common human coronavirus illness will recover on their own. However, to relieve your symptoms you can:
take pain and fever medications (Caution: do not give aspirin to children) use a room humidifier or take a hot shower to help ease a sore throat and cough drink plenty of liquids stay home and rest If you are concerned about your symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
Testing for common human coronaviruses Sometimes, respiratory secretions are tested to figure out which specific germ is causing your symptoms.
If you are found to be infected with a common coronavirus (229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1), that does not mean you are infected with the 2019 novel coronavirus. There are different tests to determine if you are infected with 2019 novel coronavirus. Your healthcare provider can determine if you should be tested.
I'm one of those people who does catch colds and usually ignores them. I don't use symptom cover drugs usually, either. I find a runny nose less annoying than the side effects.
Politically... Word smithing... "This time it's different" translated means " pay no attention to what we said yesterday, we've got a new lie for you today "
And I'd bet you a burger that if Clinton was President, the CDC would blame Covid-19 on gun owners.
Hell. I have an entire thread on the corruption of science by politics. The CDC is a vital organization, that does excellent work. And it's a tool of greedy rich pols.
Ditto NASA. You remember, their #1 job is assuring Muslims how great their contributions to science are. A job better suited to the Smithsonian and a traveling exhibit about the 12th century, imho.
I don't think that arguing that S. Dakota is analogous to NY or Texas is going to get very far. Let's agree that rural areas and dense urban areas have very different sensitivities to the outbreak scenarios.
I've seen better math in David Weber Science fiction novels about imaginary space ships and interplanetary navigation than on tv this year.
I agree with the Democrat legislator above. And the folk here complaining that they count heroin overdoses as Covid deaths. The 2 views aren't mutually exclusive.
Here's what we "know now" about Pooh's Breath from Media.
When is COVID going to stop being the excuse for EVERYthing? I went to the DMV to register a bike. Can't do it on-line because the website link is broke. Point that out to the greeter who says there's no one to work on it - Covid. Can't get anyone at the counter to register it and give me a plate - furloughed - Covid. Need to mail it in. No plate. Can I drive without a plate? That's between you and law enforcement.
Zack, I feel you!! It's bullshit. My brother, (Who moved to Arkansas.), has been trying to get ahold of CA DMV and get his title sent to him for 4+ months...
His registration is now expired. My Tahoe is down. He has to get to work somehow...
