Joe, I'm glad you're still alive after your meat debacle. My bet is that president Trump (partially) went along with this shutdown for at least 4 reasons:
- To show the hypocrisy of this approach ("empty coffers"). - To make America self-reliant and independent from China and other countries. - To acquaint Americans to hard times ahead. - To bring about economic and monetary changes.
The first reason is obvious to many people by now, shutdown is not the right approach to the China virus. People were willing to have certain measures in place, but having a shutdown, especially having an indefinite shutdown, makes little sense considering the casualties so far. By having the shutdown it shows the hypocrisy involved, which is a win for Trump.
Second reason should be obvious, having a shutdown not only isolates people personally, but also nationally. National isolation, self-reliance and independence were part of Trump's platform to begin with. In that sense, a shutdown helps to accelerate his goals.
Third reason is also obvious, and you mentioned too that there's no income and therefore no tax revenue. No income and taxes create hard times resulting from a shutdown which again goes to demonstrate the hypocrisy of this shutdown approach. Hard times is also a good preparation for the "transitional period" brought about by making America less dependent on foreign nations. This is a period were jobs are brought back and income goes up, but this period is accompanied by temporary hard times.
Fourth reason is less obvious, but perhaps most important. Trump has 'nationalised' the Federal Reserve a couple of months ago. The FR has effectively become a national bank, whereas before it was a private bank. This nationalisation of the FR as a central bank has many benefits, many of which have been mentioned by the founding fathers in their letters.
Regarding food safety, here's what the CDC states on their website:
Can I get COVID-19 from food (including restaurant take-out, produce, refrigerated, or packaged food) or drinking water?
Currently there is no evidence that people can get COVID-19 by eating or handling food.
It may be possible that people can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object, such as a food package or dining ware that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. However, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
There is also no current evidence that people can get COVID-19 by drinking water. The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or kill the virus that causes COVID-19. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html
As to Trump's reasons for following expert bureaucrats advice ( medical edition )?
Why not ask? If it's not a National Defense Secret, he'll tell you.
There are zero conspiracies possible in the Trump White House, unlike the constant stream of false e-mail address, law violating, treasonous Obama regime. Who's he going to conspire with? Ivanka? He deliberately didn't replace all the Obama Minions, unlike Clinton and Obama, who replaced the entire appointed teams as they took power.
Throw in the multiple traitors at the FBI, CIA, NSA, ETC. & there's no way to keep a conspiracy secret, as any Undersecretary may have a wire, or just illegally record any conversation with their phones.
Rachel Maddow would headline any daily. She does now, based on zero truth.
No, seriously, any reporter could ask, and get a detailed explanation.
It's a huge advantage, not being an Evil Government Overlord. You don't need to lie.
The massive exaggeration, bombast, bragging, and trolling Trump is prone to doesn't require remembering Which Lie you told Which Group, unlike Hillary Clinton faking a bad cliche Negro accent in a Black Church telling them how she'll fix Wall Street, & telling rich Wall Street donors how she'll protect their monopolies.
Yeah, he's big hero for his daily covid campaign pressers. Sounded good, lied a lot, blamed everything on Trump. Absolutely worshipped by the Media who rarely questioned anything.
Only a fool would call him on his lies. They'd never work again.
Many are puzzled by this plague. It's one thing when predictions are wrong, since some people go to the worst case to warn, or manipulate, ( sometimes hard to tell which ) and they could be operating from wrong assumptions about percentages ( which you can't know ahead of time ) but some of the peaks and valleys can't be explained by protests and bowling alley openings.
people who are most susceptible to infection get exposed first," she says, leaving a pool of ever-less susceptible people behind.
Another reason to simply open the hell back up. Let people who are scared, or high-risk, stay home if they CHOOSE, but stop forcing the rest of healthy society to lock down and sacrifice their well-being and their livelihoods, in the name of "safety".
I also agree, there are people who are at-risk, and those people should be careful.
However.
I ALSO agree that the number of at-risk people make up a small percentage of our population, and that locking down the totality of our population...does not solve the problem of safety for that small percentage. Rather, if it does solve the safety problem for a small percentage...it causes MORE problems for the larger percentage of our population.
That's the other part of the picture, that is being conveniently ignored.
LIFE is dangerous.
CARS kill on a magnitude or two higher than this virus, but we still make, purchase, maintain, and drive them.
Going outside can kill you - skin cancer, poisonous critter allergies, struck by lightning, drowning, falling, hit by a train, allergies-turned-asthma-turned-suffocation, heart attack from over-exertion, heat stroke, hypothermia, it all happens outside.
Yet, we still go outside.
Where's COVID fall, in the grand scheme of things, for RELATIVE fatality rate?
Now, compare the overall COVID response (total shutdown, total fear, total panic), relative to how society reacts to auto carnage. Or drownings. Or poisonings. Or falls from high places. Or cancer deaths. Or heart disease. Or heat stroke. Or hypothermia.
For what other threat - EVER - have we shut down all of society? Regardless of how much more (or less) of a threat it may actually be to society, and people, at large compared to COVID?
I also took note in an article I read recently - might have been one posted here - that said herd immunity may be sooner reached than 42% due to a) changes in overall concept of herd immunity that shows that point can be reached at a lower percentage of the population than previously suspected, and b) while much of our current population does not show t-cell antibodies, the severity/rate of infection and symptoms can/could be related to prior common cold infections - since the common cold is also (wait for it....) A CORONAVIRUS. And, as the normal ol' flu shot demonstrates...once you have a virus, you have a level of immunity to it. So, if you've had a good dose of common cold...you could have developed, from that, a level of immunity to COVID.
Which would explain the completely random variation in severity, even among cruise ship patients ("closed trials") who are all generally older and, in one way or another, "compromised".
And, potentially, the reason we can't predict worth a witch's tit, who will get sacked by this thing and who will get it and never even notice.
All the more reason to unlock. There's no reason to hold 99% of the world hostage.
No logic problem. the percentage of fatalities by age doesn't have any connection to the odds of dying from Covid-19. Didn't mean to imply they did. That would be a fallacy!
But what ARE the odds for a 70 year old? 60? That's why the question marks.
Just assume I'm ignoring the news & have zero trust in them... Give me your number. 1 in 200?
Age, in and of itself...is actually irrelevant. A healthy octogenarian is as potentially low-risk as a college athlete.
WuFlu doesn't kill.
WuFlu opens the door for pre-existing ailments to kill you, by weakening your immune system to the point it can't fight off the other stuff.
If wuflu killed...there would be no "recovered" column on any of the tracking sites. But, people who are otherwise healthy, with no asthma, no heart disease, no diabetes, no COPD...don't die when they catch the WuFlu. They may lose sense of taste or smell for a few days...maybe get headaches and a fever as their system fights off the virus...but they recover.
The elderly who died...had other issues, when they caught the virus. Older people have more "other issues", but if you're healthy...you're healthy, regardless of age.
If wuflu killed...there would be no "recovered" column on any of the tracking sites.
huh? I don't see the logic in that at all.
Nobody who's not an idiot thinks there's a 100% death rate with Covid-19. Over all, in America it's what? .2%? or 1 in 500?
And nobody dies of Coronavirus without other factors? Really? I need some documentation for that.
I'll point out that you could say all death is from heart failure. Behead a guy, and the heart stops. See? heart failure. Slice the femoral artery and when the blood supply drops far enough, the heart stutters, and stops. Drop him from a plane... Absurd, sure. But so is some of the spin crud I see all day.
And my Question is still valid. What is the percentage of real world American 70 year olds that will die if they catch the "wuflu"? Not mythical healthy 70 year olds. The real deal with highly variable preexisting conditions and fitness levels.
...as with anything, there are outliers...but that's a pretty solid case from what I'm seeing. The majority of the population of the globe, stands a very good chance of surviving an encounter with COVID. People who are healthy, tend to stay healthy.
People who have comorbidities...should be careful. The rest of us...should be allowed to get back to normal life, not forced to live in fear locked in our homes.
Keep in mind how skewed our numbers are in general, in the name of fear and control.... Oh, yep, absolutely!
But most dead had complications from obesity, etc. Is not "if you're healthy you won't die". It sure helps to be young and healthy. But a macrobiotic personal trainer 24/7 perfect specimen is just at LESS risk, not no risk.
I'm not arguing that we shouldn't end lockdown insanity. I'm arguing we NEED to protect the high risk people. That was the approach in Sweden, and we need to slide towards that attitude from the "Governor whims control your life in insane detail" one currently imposed.
I admit I'm self interested here. I don't think I'm missing any risk factors! But I'm really concerned with the many older & more at risk than I am.
And I live where the Governor is credibly responsible for 10,000+ dead old folk.. From Covid AND lack of medical treatment from lockdowns.
Open up the doors! End the tyranny! I'm onboard.
I just warn that we are still in a killer plague and need to take precautions.
And some small percentage of right wing pundits are being dishonest about risk and reality. My Opinion that the Left side is far worse doesn't change that we should reject/oppose/uncover lies no matter who says them or our agreement on a subject.
I'm arguing we NEED to protect the high risk people.
Agree. Completely.
But 100% of the people are being "protected" (i.e. locked down), when nowhere NEAR 100% of the people are actually at-risk.
I just warn that we are still in a killer plague and need to take precautions.
And I still argue that compared to other societal "killers"...this one doesn't rate anywhere near the fearmongering (nor the actual body count) that it has been getting. It's just not the monster we're being told it is. Dangerous? Yes, to certain people. But to the globe as a whole? Nah. We're learning more each day that it just...isn't.
