>>>>Oh and the thought of Court hanging out in Florida... lololololol
Hahahah . . . yeah . . . I was, of all places, in NY when this started. I came down to our farm in FL for 2 days for an annual physical . . . and, well, just kinda got stuck here.
It's been great . . . I seldom see a soul, except horses, have great security and get to ride my bike on the order of 50 miles a day and have been working my butt off.
Going to head back to NY for a bit but intend to hunker down and stay sequestered. . . .likely come back to FL after the hot weather of Aug/Sept pass . . depending on how many sorties we may need to fly in the Hudson Valley.
There are worse places to be stuck than here where it's 95oF daily.
>>>>Really, there is no better thing than common sense.
Char . . you made my day.
Since February . . I have been saying "caution and common sense" . . . I take my BP and temp when I get up and when I go to bed . . . I make certain I get 8 hours of sleep and I generally exercise enough to waste away 2,500 calories a day depending on how busy I am at work.
It all boils down to common sense and caution.
I have yet to know anyone who has been afflicted. I feel fortunate.
Char, you're in a good bit deeper than my sis, who's been furloughed, expecting to go back in on 7/28. I'll have her follow up here on what I've been scanning.
I've abandoned work as a fine dining server at a $$$ restaurant. Now doing very different day work. I now have to interact with 3-5 different co-workers briefly, daily, over 8 hours, with the random incoming client coming in to pick up/drop off stuff. Unless someone sneezes directly at me, the chemicals in the general environment and air will F up COVID.
I go home. Rest, drink some cold beer. Dinner, before we watch Jeopardy. Then stupid shows, some fun. Repeat. No current reliable MC, might get a jon boat.
Hope to see some of youn's down the road... Suches? Little Switzerland? Maybe next year. Be sane, then sensible, then safe, then... repeat and teach others.
Thanks again, Charlotte, Court. You're both solidly reliable as to what we're speaking of.
The only thing I fear for is the soul of this nation!!!!! I have had a great life... I'm ready to go whenever. Applying common sense and believing in science is not equal to living in fear. If I was afraid I'd have quit my job already.
I repeat... APPLYING COMMON SENSE AND BELIEVING IN SCIENCE IS NOT EQUAL TO LIVING IN FEAR!
Don't make me start posting Greta Thunberg memes.
Court... it is great it's all worked out. Changing jobs in the middle of this has been the greatest thing that has happened to me since my cross country trip!
" let’s compare the United States to the entire European Union, and for kicks let’s add Canada into the mix: ... Well, look at that. The United States’ CFR (3.93 percent) is significantly lower than the European Union (10.36 percent) and Canada (8.1 percent)."
Now, obviously, CFR is not necessarily the best or most accurate metric. As OurWorldInData explains, “it’s important to note that it is the ratio between the number of confirmed deaths from the disease and the number of confirmed cases, not total cases. That means that it is not the same as – and, in fast-moving situations like COVID-19, probably not even very close to – the true risk for an infected person.” This is very true. The CFR in the United States is currently just under 4 percent, but that doesn’t mean nearly 4 percent of the people infected by COVID-19 will die. According to the CDC, the overall mortality rate for symptomatic cases of COVID-19 is likely .4 percent.
Growing up in a raging cold war shaped us. We learned to not fear the bomb. Rather, we all learned to have an odd love for it. In Kindergarten I developed memories of older kids protecting me in the basement from the blast we could expect. School prepared me for a place in the nuclear industry protecting the bomb. I have retired in an afterlife away from that war where I ponder a fizzled out existence. Now we have a generation of weak minded smooth brains scared of the common cold. Had they been minded to experience a cold war their fear would not be so great. When I was a child I had a fever. My hands were like two balloons. My army toys arrayed before me on the davenport played war games without my hands. The uniformed olive drab plastic men became arrayed in marvelous colors. The flames leapt from the barrels of the tanks and rifles. A fog descended upon the battlefield as it stretched beyond the fabric confines of that couch. The trailer walls vanished in an instant and I could see the skies unfold before me. The cinematic power of a child's mind rivals all of the capabilities of modern computer generated videos. Especially when considering it interspersed reality and fantasy, real time and altered reality, the melding was seamless and not discernible. The memory takes hours of time compression just to study a second of replay in my mind. And this pathetic society would have me run scared of a cold. I welcome any cold that could restore the vision from my youth. I ain't skeared!
People are saying that they don't know anybody who has contracted COVID. It is real. I lost two family members, a great family friend, and I suspect also my mother who passed in early March right before the media "awareness" started. These were all people with underlying health conditions. I also know of friends who lost family members, although I didn't know those people personally.
I know of several otherwise healthy people who were infected but were able to recover.
Which story? The motorcycle crash? Verified, probably, age is right in the time span of last week, but no names.
The interview with the local health official? I suppose it could be as fictional as most political news on CNN. Haven't found a denial.
Some "experts" claim under-reporting. Some over-reporting. I lack data to have an opinion.
I did see a chart of cases that shows a drop, then a rise. You've probably seen it. I have no doubt it's accurate, in curve if not in precise numbers.
Determining WHY is harder. One pundit simply took one such chart off the web and noted on it events of the timeline. Events like bars opening and protests.
Without even looking, I can predict the curves. Goes down ( event ) keeps going down, then goes up. Further ( event ) keeps going up. ( and since each event is a "positive" factor it won't go down for a while ) I'm going to assume everyone here doesn't need an explanation for the science behind that prediction.
The pundit, of course, had a biased agenda. And just by choosing events and not analyzing how much each one affects the curves, can imply anything he wants.
It's not a "disbelief" - it's a realistic approach to the true fatality rate.
It's out there, but if you listen to the press, it's all about case counts, and anyone who gets it is doomed because it's an extinction-level event.
They don't talk about fatality rates (because they continue to drop, per xx cases).
They don't talk about recovery rates, because someone may take that as POSITIVE news.
It isn't about whether COVID exists; it's a matter of the overblown (and continued mantra) assertion about how deadly and dangerous this whole thing is, to the public in general, in order to keep things shut down for...whatever reason. There is mounting evidence all over that shows the true CFR is in the sub-1% range...
Court- also note the report was from a local station that happens to be Fox-affiliated as opposed to national Fox News, so hopefully that makes them a little less likely to spin the report.
Earlier in the week, this same station reported huge discrepancies in COVID test results across Florida. This story is claimed to be confirmed by state officials:
Could be true . . . but . . really . . I'm keeping an eye on things . . . working, exercising, staying fit and staying clear of humans. I came here for a 2 day gig in February and have kind of enjoyed it and been most productive. No one walks in my office . . . I do not eat cheeseburgers for lunch 3 days a week and my total commute time for the last 6 months has been zero. The $75 I was putting in the truck, in fuel, every other day has gone straight to an outfit called Hunger America and I'm just laying low and making sure the family is safe.
I'd like to add that I trust my leaders to deal with it . . . but, suspect entropy and time are going to have to work double time.
One thing Ive wasted not a single second on is that Facebook or Twitter crap . . I listen to some of those folks and you'd thing aliens in spacecraft with illegal assault weapons have landed.
My initial reaction is skepticism on herd immunity and that common cold exposure may immunize some against Covid-19. Seems optimistic. That there are 6 strains of varying nastiness is interesting.
Court, keep on being smart. This isn't close to over. Hygiene, distancing and masks are just plain necessary to survive any airborne epidemic.
I'm not certain about gloves and how needed they are. Skin contact other than touching your face ( or other areas ) doesn't seem to be vital for most. It's different for nurses and lab workers, anyone in health care with high risk. Waiters and retail, maybe yes.
wearing gloves then rubbing your eyes, nose, or mouth with gloves on is far worse than no gloves but no face rubbing... And for many people it's hard not to touch their own face. Habit.
The most important part of wearing masks is probably the reminder not to touch your own face without washing FIRST.
I got in the habit of washing hands before using the toilet decades ago when I worked in machine shops. Chlorinated oils and razor sharp metal chips. You don't want to grab yourself with that on your hands.
That got reinforced when I helped build a Quickie fiberglass airplane using the "Rutan method" of moldless composite construction. Invisible glass fibers, non magnetic, epoxy, ( highly likely to provoke allergic reactions ) sticky... I've met several guys who had to abandon years long projects because they developed allergy to the chemicals used. Thousands of hours and dollars invested.
Laying low to protect the family is Important. I try to do the shopping, instead of them.
It isn't about whether COVID exists; it's a matter of the overblown (and continued mantra) assertion about how deadly and dangerous this whole thing is, to the public in general, in order to keep things shut down for...whatever reason. Rat, the percentage... And I have no informed opinion on if it's a little or a lot worse than "typical flu", may not be the most informative factor on decision making about business opening.
Covid-19 isn't as bad as the most pessimistic reports/predictions/spin AND it's worse than the most optimistic... I find arguments about exactly where on that spread less important than reinforcing common sense and education.
I could be wrong about that.
It's entirely possible to be concerned with the government response, rights and power trips, AND be concerned with getting through the real world epidemic. There's nothing incompatible there.
I'd rather discuss the political spin on the hashthing social resisting thread, or wherever else appropriate to the subject... Like vote fraud or if the CA Governor is hypocritical for leaving his own winery open & shutting down others.
But it can be hard to separate the discussion. Is the nursing home disaster in New York health and political? Sure.
Imho the important part isn't to complain about errors, or deliberate misconduct, it's to learn so they don't get repeated.
The company is now taking it a step further and banning ads against content that make claims going against authoritative scientific consensus. Banned claims would include conspiracy theories like vaccines being attempts to genetically modify the population, that Bill Gates created Covid-19 or that the disease was a bioweapon made in a Chinese lab.
Hmmm, ''claims going against authoritative scientific consensus''. Mark my words, this is only the beginning. Next in line of things banned by Google is ''climate change denial going against authoritative scientific consensus''.
I've considered carefully your ad hominem attack on Whatever's ad hominem attack on the people of F!orida.
I accused you of ad hominem attack, and you responded with a tu quoque? Or did we just circular firing squad the whole thing with ad hominem all around?
