Pneumonia seems to be the big killer with Covid-19 & it HAS been the big killer of old folk for millions of years, or whatever you think time it's been since lungs were a new fad. The cases' number isn't very meaningful without the number of tests given and compared to the previous records. Early on, they wouldn't test you unless you showed symptoms, now, in many areas, it is by request, so many asymptomatic people are now "cases." | ||

It is also meaningless without a correlating hospitalization number and/or fatality number. I know lots of people with "laceration cases". Many are paper cuts; many are a simple nick with a blade. Not all lacerations are life-threatening. Perspective. Which the "media" refuses to provide. | ||

That should read for 'Muricans, "It's (pneumonia) nasty (whether you have a ) virus ( coronavirus ) or no(t)" That's the problem with reading old & foreign writers, and watching youtube, 'cause in my head that sentence ended "virus or noo" in a Scottish accent. ( "...or no" ) Some may have noticed that I often use the UK spelling on words like rumour because occasionally when I learn a word that first read sticks, and when computerized spell check complains, I look it up, and if it's good in a language variant, screw Microsoft. What matters is fatality rate since the testing rate has steadily increased. We get tested every 2 weeks at work for Covid, only once for antibodies (unnecessary after first test) I have no patience with anybody who declares mask-wearing to be unnecessary government intrusion and yet disagree with people pooping on sidewalks when every one of us has a right to poop even though s h i t t i n g is not specifically called out in the constitution. A friend's wife is a neonatal nurse who had breast cancer, double mastectomy, finished chemo a year ago and now is on duty again as a nurse. A friend's wife's childhood friend just died last week. My nephew had SEVEN tours in Iraq/Afghanistan and is now terrified of the results of his test tomorrow, especially since he didn't self-report until he was really sick and had hung out with LOTS of folks when AZ declared, "Problem, WHAT PROBLEM" and everybody it seemed stopped mask-wearing and social distancing. Pound each other over the head with all the stats you wish, you're over-thinking and a lot of you are just kidding yourselves. I tend to value people (young and old) and mask wearing is a small contribution.  | ||

Covid-19 generally doesn't kill you like Ebola, that basically explodes cells ( all viruses do that ) but at such a high rate that you are slowly dissolving and bleeding to death internally. The danger appears, from what I can tell, and yeah, please correct me... The pneumonia is why the 3 drug "cocktail" some doctors are using has zinc, Hydroxychloroquine, and an antibiotic. The antibiotic is NOT for the Covid-19, it's to prevent the bacterial pneumonia. Much as I hate to use the buzzword, you want a Holistic approach to the treatment of many diseases, not just a "take 2 pills and call me in the morning". Your results might be much better if the prescription was more along the lines of "take these pills, eat some protein tonight, a steak, chicken, tofu, whatever, but skip the fries, so you have a long slow blood sugar curve, while you sleep, ( the drug will work better, and the food will keep your stomach from getting acid ) and bang down enough coffee in the morning to just before you hit jittery, and take a real long hot shower after the coffee. And try to get at least 5 hours sleep." | ||

And the freaking idiots who just went months locked in their apartments running around with zero care about spreading or catching this, like the Announcement that you could get your hair cut from the TV set meant it's all over. If it wasn't for the people they will kill, I'd be meanly cynically rooting for Darwin. I have a small core group, that I don't wear masks or keep distance from. Close family, and friends. But I also wash my hands ( alcohol rub ) after shopping, and with soap and water after I drop the bags on the counter at my Mom's etc. Firewall as much as I can. Compromises. I don't wear a mask at home or in the car, that's silly, and useless. I do wash my cloth masks, and the paper one in the car hangs from the mirror when I get home so the Sun can Purify It, All Hail Apollo. ( joke, it's UV ) If you haven't seen it, the InRange video above is fairly level headed. Wearing a mask in an epidemic is an IQ test. | ||

I had seen somebody posting a "proof" about how ineffective masks are at preventing you from getting the virus by saying you can smell a fart when wearing a mask. I countered by saying that no, the snot, spittle and other stuff that spews out when you cough, sneeze or even talk - it's THIS stuff that can carry the virus and project it some distance. The fart-smellers really need to realize that a mask protects others like you'd be protected standing behind somebody who suddenly has a wet fart. Would you rather he be bare-assed naked or at least wearing tidy-whities? | ||

I work in a world class healthcare system now. And I go onto hospital wards where folks have critical cases of covid. You can say what you like, but until you see a person looking like a white, dead carcass, with about twenty tubes coming out of them, and you know they will probably never see their family again... you can go •••• yourself. As far as masks, we wear them in the hospital, sanitize hands and wash hands regularly. Haven't gotten it yet. With that being said... I wipe down EVERYTHING I bring into the house and take a shower if I am in the hospital that day. You can have all the stats, and I have plenty... because the leadership, REAL LEADERS, are giving us ALL the information they have. So, yeah... deny all you want... we will see 250,000 Americans die because people are being stupid and making it a political thing... whatever... (Message edited by Whatever on July 14, 2020) | ||

The political thing is hard to separate from the real world. Because there's a Revolution against human rights, and some are exploiting this disease to gain power. Or you can call it something less dramatic. Which we have a separate thread for. Sure, there's a short list of politicians who, as lawyer trained manipulators, with little to no education in science, and mostly zero training or aptitude for medicine, didn't think the Wuhan epidemic was worth canceling big public events they could use to get more donations and votes. They now have utter denial amnesia about that ancient history, ( March 2020 ) and accuse their enemies of careless uncaring ineptitude, and call them murderers for objecting to arbitrary choices by certain Presidents, Governors & Mayors. Like forbidding people from attending drive in church services. But allowing mass protests they thought would get them more donations and votes. Here on this thread, we argue about some stupid stuff, sure, like the usefulness of a layer of cloth over the face. As a pro, I wonder if you have any observations on the effectiveness of the 2 politically hyped off label drug treatments? There's the malaria drug/zinc/antibiotic cocktail. (that because one politician mentioned it was criticized by other politicians who hate him and thus is hard to get accurate information about ) And the failed to pass effectiveness studies anti viral. ( that because a politician mentioned it... Dena vu! ) The cocktail uses a long available generic drug. The New Miracle Drug is proprietary, extremely expensive, and the highly visible guy hyping it has monetary ties to the company. ( which spent millions to develop it and before Covid-19 was probably going to have to eat the loss. ) So there's motivation for lying about the expensive drug treatment. Which doesn't mean it's not effective! It just casts doubt on the hype from the politically biased Media. As I used to say about a retired politician, "He can't lie all the time or he wouldn't get what he wants when he orders lunch", so just because ( your most disliked celebrity news jerk ) says something doesn't prove it false. Otherwise life would be freaking easy. | ||

The side effects, getting nausea, a mild fever, are normal in first try vaccines. Heck, about half the time I get my annual flu shot I get a noticeable fever and mild common cold symptoms. The rest of the times I don't notice. But testing takes time, and more than one test group. Even fast tracked with the FDA willing to take risks, it's time consuming. I predicted this fall, and I might even be right. ( I thought it an optimistic guess, but realistic ) Can't take credit if I am, it was a pretty safe guess. Won't be surprised if it's not available till December. And any vaccine has risks. A percentage will get the disease with attenuated vaccines ( ones made from killed viruses ) and synthetic vaccines ( made from assembled fragments that will mimic the "signature" of the real thing ) can have their own problems . And there's always a tiny percentage that react terrible to... Anything. One of the freak things that cause us to insist on multiple group trials is...heroin. Heroin was developed as a non addictive replacement for morphine. Lots of opium and later morphine addicts got addicted after surgery or injury, for centuries. ( morphine went commercial in 1827 ) So there was good incentive to make a better painkiller. Here's the cosmic joke. A percentage of people just don't get addicted to opiates. It's genetic. And those people tend to be methodical smart folk. The kind that do medical research. The initial volunteer group, quite small, was by coincidence entirely that gene group. So preliminary test showed success and they published. The rest, as they say, is history. | ||

But it's not enough to avoid getting infected. ( nothing short of total isolation can ) You gotta wash hands and avoid crowds. But "under control in X weeks" ? BULL. If there was 100% compliance and Venusian healing rays were beamed at Earth by the Illuminati there'd still be folk getting sick next year. That's insane utopian fantasy, and actually counter productive to the goal of reducing the spread. |
