Can’t beat a Sprecher’s! Best I’ve ever had. That will go great with your Italian sausage burger. Good decision in the money. |

That little red roadster looks the business. Nice to see some picture of the 78's guts... you'll have her on the road before you know it. |

Ah Done Did It! I’m the owner of a 2016 XL 1200 CX Roadster! Or, I will be shortly. Tomorrow morning at 6:50 AM, I’ll be on a flight to Wichita, Kansas, where I’ll sign my name a few times, then I’ll climb on my new Roadster and take a couple of days to get back to Cheviot. Or maybe I’ll just push on through until I get home. I’ll see how it goes. I didn’t really intend buying today. I was just going to call and get a feel of whether I might go for it, but I jumped. I didn’t even try to talk him down. The price is fair. I’ve said it before; I’m not a good haggler. In this case, I didn’t even try. I don’t know why, but this bike is the one that spoke to me. There was a black ’16 in Indianapolis which is a lot closer and easier to get to and it even had fewer miles on it, but it didn’t click with me and neither did the dealership. I guess David was right. He said that when the right bike came up, I’d know it. It’s funny; I called the dealership around 10:15 this morning, and by 1:30 everything was set. I spent the rest of the afternoon looking at the 10 day forecast for here, Wichita and St. Louis, lining up a flight, booking a room in the Motel 6, then riding over to the Credit Union to get some cash. Once I got back, I packed a small bag that’s got a few changes of underwear and my toilet kit in it and put my helmet in its helmet bag. I’m ready to go. David’s going to give me a ride to the airport in the morning. I’m getting the Grand Circle Tour. I fly from here to Chicago, then I go to Las Vegas, then I finally get to Wichita by 5:00 PM. There’s a price to pay when you go for the cheap flight. I’m not bringing my tool kit with me. There’s no way they’d let me take it on board, and I’m not checking my bags. I have a very small Gym type bag and my helmet. I seldom need tools when I’m on the road, but I’d feel a lot better if I had them with me. Oh, well. This isn’t a completely impulsive purchase; even though it might seem like one. I sat and went over my financial plan and both the plastic and the furnace loan will be paid off on schedule. I won’t have money to burn, but it’s not a totally whimsical purchase. The area that will suffer will be the modifications I plan to make. They’ll be delayed a bit, but only for a bit. As I said previously, I rode the Roadster for a year before I modified it, I can do that with this Roadster. I don’t think it’ll take a year before I start making changes. That’ll start as soon as I get the bike home. I am Happy! |

Wichita is 7 hours from me. The couch is open for you if you feel like stopping. Decent BBQ nearby too! Also, if you do have any problems just call and I'll come pick you up with the trailer. (Message edited by tootal on April 15, 2020) |

Reminds me of when some friends and I rode to Milwaukee for the 85th Birthday party for HD. One guy had a Sportster with a 75 mile range. So one friend, being a fellow brewery worker, decided it was a good idea to put a case of Budweiser in his saddle bag with some ice so every hour and when we pulled in for gas we'd have a cheap beer! At the first stop we found out what happens to a can of beer that's been on the paint shaker for over an hour!! |

A Quick Note From Lost Wages I only got 3-1/2 hours of sleep last night. I woke up too early and couldn’t get back to sleep. So my brain is working like my neurons are made of soggy toilet paper. I left the house at 5:00 AM and like the walking vegetable I am today, I forgot to bring my cell phone with me. This means that not only will I not have any tools with me (not even my Leatherman), I don’t have a phone to call anyone, either. I was going to say it’s like tramping in the old days, but I always had tools with me back then. I’m flying on Southwest because they had the lowest fares. However, it’s going to take 12 hours to go from Cincinnati to Wichita I flew from Cincy to Chicago to Las Vegas; now I get to fly from Vegas to Wichita. I won’t arrive in Wichita until almost 6:00 Eastern Time. Both Ourdee and Tootal have offered to put me up along the way. I was thinking about how comfortable Greg’s recliner is; last time I slept there I slept like a baby. However, I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get all the paperwork sorted and signed at the dealership, so I don’t know when I’ll actually hit the road. If I get a late start, I might not ride that far the first day. Especially since I don’t have the bike sorted out yet. It just might feel like a medieval torture device that’s been modernized. I’d say I’ll call, but my phone is in Cheviot. I do have my laptop with me, so if it looks like I might make it, I’ll send an e-mail. That holds true for both Greg and RD. Las Vegas is a ghost town. The airport is about as busy as it normally is at 3:00 AM. For that matter, there were seven passengers on the flight to Chicago and less than 20 from there to Vegas. I have an hour and a half before they start boarding for the flight east to Wichita. I’m not sure how I’ll kill the time. I’m almost finished with the book I brought with me. None of the outlets have juice here at the computer benches so I’m running on the laptop’s battery. There’s an outlet over by the gate, but sitting in those seats and trying to type is almost impossible. When the battery gets low, I’ll maybe try that. Or maybe I’ll just wait until I’m in the Motel 6 in Wichita to plug in. Hopefully, 24 hours from now, I’ll be cruising east on I-70 in Missouri on my new Roadster, thinking about the changes I’m going to make to turn it into the Gentleman’s Express. |

Ourdee. I'm actually looking at trading off my Roadster for something with more power, a bigger tank and cruise control. Oddly enough, still a Roadster. But my distance between fill ups would definitely get longer. |

Dude, you picked a great time for a road trip. I just filled up the car with $1.15/gal gasoline. When you deduct the state and federal road taxes and sales tax that comes to 72¢/gal - cheaper than a Big Gulp. |

John, i'm assuming you'll take i-35 to kc then jump on i-70. I'm about 8 miles south of i-35 right before you hit the the KC suburbs if you run into troubles. You forgot your phone, so this is the quick and dirty to my place, so just take exit 198, head south 6.5 miles til you hit the stop sign, take a right, go for a mile, take your first left (vermont rd), another mile, first left (neosho), I'm in the second house on the north side of the road (green with yellow trim). |

Roy, IMHO you need a proper Dyna. My best bud has a silver Dyna standard, FXDS, but with every piece of chrome and junk, added by the previous owner. Surely you could grab one for cheeep. |

Brad, um, not my style. Considering a few options including a great, great grandson of your bike. R1250R R1250RS FTR 1200 All on the list. And I've located a 2016 R1200R that appears to be screaming good deal. But this is Crusty's thread. Go Crusty! |

A Few Thoughts in Wichita This country is hurting. I flew from Cincinnati to Chicago to Las Vegas to Wichita today. The biggest crowd was on the flight to Vegas; I think there were 20 people on the 737. While it was nice to have nobody in the row ahead of me or the row behind me and I had three seats to myself on all three flights, I don’t see how the airlines can stay in business if this continues for very long. The $153.00 that my ticket cost wouldn’t even cost the price of the fuel it took for 1/20th of one leg. I’m in the Motel 6 near the airport and near the dealership. I called Freedom Road when I got in the room and the owner is going to pick me up on his way in tomorrow. Considering that it cost 10 bucks plus tip for a cab from the terminal to the motel (a distance of 2.1 miles), I figured it wouldn’t hurt to see if someone at the shop would pick me up on their way in. The weather is supposed to be pretty brisk tomorrow a high temp of 53 all the way to St. Louis. It’s really nice right now; the temperature is really close to 70 F. I wish it could be like this all the way home, but then it wouldn’t be as much of an adventure. It’s the hard times that make it memorable. Adversity overcome really adds spice to an experience. However, that’s in memory; it still sucks big time while you’re in the middle of it. I was hoping to get some sort of a meal, but I really don’t feel like walking any real distance. There’s a Denny’s right beside the motel, but they’re “Temporarily Closed due to the Covid-19 Virus” The next nearest place is a McDonalds that I can’t even see from here. My ass is dragging after getting only three and a half hours of sleep last night followed by sitting on airplanes all day long. I hope I sleep well tonight and feel recovered in the morning. I’ve got the usual mixed feelings that I always get when I buy a new bike. I’m eager to get it and I’m excited about it, but I’m also unsure if I’ve made the right choice or if I’ve made a big mistake. I’ve felt this way every time I’ve bought a bike. I felt this way when I bought my best and most endearing bikes. Then again, I felt this way when I bought my worst bikes, too. Getting back to dinner; I did a cop out. I went down to the vending machines and bought a 20 oz. bottle of Pepsi and a bag of Nacho Cheese Bugles. That’ll hold me until tomorrow when I get a gut bomb and have to eat it sitting on the curb beside the bike. That’s healthier than being able to sit inside where it’s warm. Or somethin’. Just ask the guvna of Michigan. She’ll tell ya I shouldn’t be out riding a motorcycle, anyhow. Well; I’m tired. But tomorrow I get my new bike. Oh boy! |
