Do what you know to be right, not what some person with libido dominandi tries to scare you into! There are a multitude of people in the world that need a swift kick between the legs or upside their backs. If you find yourself suffering from such an affliction don't get into an elevator with me, no camera, and no witness. I have grown tired.
JOE BLACK: Why I'm not living in fear of the coronavirus By Joe Black
I’ve never been much of a worrier. Oh my mom was. If she didn’t have anything to worry about, she would worry that she didn’t have anything to worry about.
I’m not that way. Almost to a fault.
I’m not afraid of much either. I’m not afraid of the dark. Not afraid of noises in the night. Not afraid to go into a strange neighborhood. I’m not really afraid of the coronavirus either. Let me explain.
I’m in several at-risk categories. I’m 66. I’m a healthcare worker. I’m still working, out in the public every day, seeing patients and doing my job. The chances of me being a carrier are above average. Certainly above those that are quarantined, without contact with the rest of the world.
I do respect the coronavirus. I just don’t fear it. Not for me personally.
I may be a senior citizen, but I’m in quite good shape for a man my age. I’m getting more sleep than I have since I was a teenager. My blood pressure is under control. I’m eating well.
I’m not naïve and I’m not stupid, but I’m confident that my physical condition and health practices will help me if I do get the coronavirus and I’m confident I will get the care I need were I to be hospitalized. In the meantime, I have a job to do.
I’m doing my part to protect myself. I usually wash my hands often, before and after every patient. Now I’m adding in a squirt of hand sanitizer every time I pass a dispenser. Washing my hands whenever possible. I wear a mask when in the clinic and when I’m in a public place.
I practice social distancing. My desk has been moved so that I’m a good distance from anyone else. I’m giving more than the six feet of recommended space. I avoid other people except when absolutely necessary. It’s not impossible for me to get the coronavirus, but I am doing everything I can to protect myself. I feel pretty good about my chances.
But that’s not what worries me (yes, I do worry a bit, sometimes). What worries me is that I will be a carrier without even knowing it and will give it to someone else. A patient. A coworker. A family member.
Because of that, I am completely isolated from my family. With a newborn in one household and two physician parents in the other, all risk needs to be minimized. And since I’m a possible carrier, despite all I’m doing, I stay away from all of them.
I’ve quit riding a bicycle in a group — not for fear of being contaminated by someone else but for fear of being the reason someone else gets it. Let’s face it, being in healthcare means I am at risk regardless of what I do. I accept that and go on. But I cannot allow myself to be the reason someone else gets it. I have a social and professional responsibility to protect others.
Now I’m going off on a rant. Every day, I see people being very cavalier about this. People standing around talking without masks or social distancing. People sitting at a picnic table having lunch like there isn’t a raging pandemic out there. People wearing gloves and using that as an excuse not to wash their hands (folks, all you’re doing is carrying this stuff from one surface to the other and protecting no one).
If that’s you, if you aren’t washing your hands, keeping your hands out of your mouth, and practicing strict social distancing, WAKE UP!
You may not be concerned about your own personal safety but what about others? Your grandmother, your infant niece, your immunosuppressed cousin that had cancer not that long ago, your friend with diabetes?
YOU have a responsibility to THEM. If you don’t think it will get you, that’s fine. I guess that’s your business. But don’t be the reason someone else gets it. We simply must put a stop to the spread of this disease.
So far ..... admittedly a non-representative sample..... everyone I’ve personally heard of.... always seems to be friend of a friend of a friend..... has gotten it, spend a couple crappy, and scary days, and recovered.
It’s all of us old farts that are at risk. I’m hoping that being in great shape will keep the demons away.
I’d still love to find that meme somebody posted of Democratic comments that the virus was no big deal. I’m being lectured about how Pres. Trump blew it and all the clairvoyant dems tried to tell him.
I’d start with the shit they gave him for the travel ban, and the fact that while Trump was assembling a task force, Pelosi was busy handing out, solemnly, and with great respect for the rule of law, her gold plated impeachment pens.
Awesome . . . .that’s one. . . But I thought someone had a collection of Tweets, in a meme, of that type of material. Regardless. . . That should help hold the detractors at bay.
I suspect what President Trump does in the next 10 days could have a huge impact on the 2020 electron.
Gee...looks like SoKo has it licked. Funny, that...global testing, dealing with people who actually have the disease but aren't showing any symptoms...instead of only testing people who have symptoms, thus...well...pretty much wasting the limited number of test kits available.
I say again - if we (humans - not Americans, not Italians, but HUMANS) want to lick this, we need to test every soul on the planet, ESPECIALLY the asymptomatic. That should be the FIRST priority.
I guarantee there are more carriers out there than ANYONE suspects...and if you're carrying, you're spreading. It may not make YOU sick, but what about the people you have contact with??
Remind me again why we only test people with symptoms?
>>> I saw that article earlier today. Interesting, but keep in mind, despite claiming to be a random study, it's still centered in the hot spot of Germany.
It's a random sampling for that city, not any other place, or of the pandemic in general.
>>> It may very well turn out to be grossly over estimating the actual number infected around the world. In fact, it would be reasonable to expect that.
"Reasonable" isn't science. That's conjecture.
>>> So you are taking a "random" sampling from the hot spot from one of the hot spot countries of the world.
Exactly.
>>> Still, accepting this as representative of the rest of the world (dubious at best), that leaves us a long way from developing herd immunity. That leaves with the likelihood of either a spike again when we start relaxing the social measures, or a spike next flu season if it turns out to be seasonal. Let's hope it's seasonal and we have a vaccine by then. Neither is a given at this point.
The death rate there is what? I think that is the oat important finding.
Court; You don't owe me for finding that. I wanted to see it again for myself. I just couldn't remember where it was.
If you come out here after the lockdown has been lifted, I'll turn you onto some of the best Burnt Ends I've ever tasted. I think you'll like them. The BBQ joint (Velvet Smoke) is "Temporarily Closed" at present, though. Unfortunately.
SK doesn't test everyone. They do thorough contact tracing and test all possible contacts. Most importantly, they shut down travel with China and Europe weeks before we did, and asked their leading biotech firm (private business) to develop test kits, and in two weeks they had them.
We didn't close travel soon enough, though sooner is SOOOO much better than later, AND we relied upon the CDC for test kits, and they fell flat on their face. Lesson learned.
SK learned their lesson from SARS the first go around.
Question re SK though is when/how may they open the country? Will they test at airports, and keep up the rigorous contact tracing until a vaccine comes along?
So, any bets as to when the American people say "Screw this!" and get on with their daily lives? Does anyone seriously believe that handshakes and hugs are going to be a thing of the past? Are we going to have some goofy government mandated warning sticker tattooed on our faces? Come on people get a spine! This crap is ridiculous! You have let the doomsayers push you way too far.
We didn't close travel soon enough... When did President Trump shut down travel into the US from China (for which he was roundly excoriated by All The Usual Suspects [ATUS] in the media and Feral Government)?
Do I remember right that he was called a racist for this action?
...AND we relied upon the CDC for test kits Based on my read, that we rely on the CDC for pretty much anything is troubling:
This warning from the CDC on February 25, immediately picked up and pushed hard by ATUS (example shown above), combined with reliance on what proved to be grossly inaccurate models from Imperial and IHME, is what stoked the fear furnace that has burned our economic engine to a crisp (which must be a source of great glee to our nation's enemies...both foreign and domestic...)
So: do y'all know who Dr. Messonnier is?
Extra-credit question: Why is she, specifically, speaking on behalf of the CDC?
The answer to the second question can be found in the answer to the first question...
