“In epidemiology, a case fatality rate (CFR) — sometimes called case fatality risk — is the proportion of deaths from a certain disease compared to the total number of people diagnosed with the disease for a certain period of time.”
Only counting confirmed cases appears to be the very definition of CFR rather than a bastardization of it.
Educated people avoid using socially awkward terms like German measles because there are other terms such as "rubella" that people know and use. Yes, there are some specific regions which get diseases named after them that have no other common name, but no one is usually talking about them anyway except for health professionals. If you're not such a professional, no one cares if you say German measles because maybe that is all you know it by.
Once again the term CFR is bastardized by using "reported" cases. Not only is that unscientific it is a patently stupid attempt determine how "deadly" this or any other virus is. How many cases go unreported when someone simply "calls in sick"?
No. Stupid is ignoring the best data available for want of data that you will never obtain. BTW, go off.
“Educated people avoid using socially awkward terms like German measles”
I’ll ignore the insult, and just say that in my 50 years, I’ve never known anyone who became awkward at the mention of German measles. Because ‘woke’ people find something socially awkward, doesn't mean that, in reality, it is. Their make believe world doesn’t count.
As you’re reveling in your wokefullness, recall that everyone referred to this as the wuhan virus until they realized they could suddenly stop saying it and use it to “get Trump”. Your admonishments don’t have a lot of weight, in that context.
CFR means what it means. Is it useful? Debatable. It describes the death rate of people sick enough to seek medical attention. I understand the denominator issue. But, like Tom said, we’re never going to know that number. We don’t know it for seasonal flu, we won’t know it for this.
It is normal to call it by where it came from when there is no other name for it yet. To keep calling it by that name after there are other names to use is not normal, which is why people called him out on it. Racist? If you insist on asking, yes, but only technically. How do you argue that Chinese is not a race?
I don't think I made anything up. While 'virus' is not a racial term 'Chinese' ultimately is. It pertains to the Chinese race. Is Black Lives Matters a racial term? Yes, Black refers to a race. I think when you take the drama out of the question, the answer is grammatically clear.
I think America is racially mixed which complicates it, but sure, American motorcycles are certainly ethnic. And why is that an offensive thing? You sound very upset.
>>>Blake, for such a stickler for science, you seem extremely willing to accept a pretty crazy idea that most of the population has already had this virus, recovered, and has antibodies, providing a herd immunity that is reducing the infection rate. I've seen zero evidence for this assertion. The math... Let's just call it very improbable.
I've only said that we don't know what the number is.
quote:
The current testing checks for the virus. People who've been infected and recovered don't test positive for the virus, but they were infected. The only way to detect the portion of the population who've been infected is to test for anti-bodies. That test is just now hitting the market. We do not know mortality rate of infected cases, because we don't know how many people were infected. We may be close to knowing how many were infected and showed serious symptoms, but that may be a small or large part of the total infected population. We don't know.
That said, I heard Dr. Birx speak clearly today about there being a LOT more asymptomatics than they had figured.
True, ethnic is not a good fit for the term American, nationalist would be a better I think. Can you say that Buell American Motorcycles is a nationalist term? Sounds fair to me. On it's face, it's not an offensive term. The offense is projected onto the term. Have people projected offensiveness onto the term Chinese Virus to sell headlines? Yes.
>>> I call it the CCP-virus, or the ChiCom Mob virus. Those lying tyrants need to be held to account for what they've done.
Yep, I completely agree. I call it the China Virus or Chinese Virus. I want people to know and remember where it came from and why it's gotten so bad. I don't think it's racist, but more than that, I really don't care if someone thinks it is or not. It's what I'm calling it period.
It also refers to the people from China. Who are multiple races, or ethnic groups if you prefer.
American motorcycles have no ethnicity. They are made by white, black, yellow, and pale blue folk. Brown & maybe even albino, if you are all hung up on color choice.
It's the Chinese flu when it comes from China. The Spanish flu in 1918 came from China too, but the first cases the provincial Europeans noticed were in Spain, which had big trade with China, often guns. When it comes from Mexico, it'll be the Mexican flu, which is also not ethnic, being a multiracial country much like the USA.
The only reason to assume racism in the name is either supreme bias and jumping on the bandwagon of hate, or being a shill of the Murderous terrorist regime that has ruled China with an Iron Fist since after WW2.
Now, let the adults get back to arguing about statistical faith matters.
Personally, I consider the source on the wild guesses and keep reminding myself to be skeptical for a while yet.
The good news is I'm doing the shopping for several elderly relatives so they don't run around and risk more.
There is no absolute safety, even if you fled to a remote location, if you did so after the news started panic mode on the story. By that time the spread was unknown but huge.
There are various definitions for the term race which is confusing. The 2020 census "defines race as a person's self-identification with one or more social groups. An individual can report as White, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, or some other race"
As I said, I haven’t, and up until you said that, no one had. However, it seems that Chinese is not a race. At least, the Chinese don’t appear to recognize it as one.
I think race is a concept useful for dividing people. We are after all the "human" race.
That said, Chinese is not a race. Asian might be, or oriental.
I recall the Hong Kong flu. Read about the Spanish flu. Lyme disease is named after Lyme Connecticut. How about that "Legionaires Disease"?
The CCP, aka the ChiCom Mob MUST be held accountable for this horrible pandemic. They've been warned repeatedly for decades about the risk of the mixes wildlife "wet" markets as well as terribly unsanitary animal farming practices.
We had SARS, also a corona class virus. Then this outbreak, which the CCP tried to hide, disappearing whistleblowers, destroying evidence, then lying about the nature of the virus, telling WHO and the world that it didn't transit human to human, and finally trying to blame it on America.
The CCP must go. This pandemic should be their end.
I mildly disagree that Chinese is not a race. I recently checked the box "Chinese" as my race on the 2020 Census a couple days ago.
Good luck getting the Chinese to reorganize their markets. I understand the Berman Law Group of Boca Raton will help you sue the Chinese in a class action lawsuit. Maybe that will help.
It seems easier to me to simply sample the new crop of viruses which develop every year than to try and convince another nation to do our work for us.
How do you sample a novel virus that's jumped from exotic endangered wild animals?
You're thinking of the flu, which we only need adapt to slight mutations from year to year.
A new virus is a whole other deal.
They need to ban the wildlife "wet" markets. The consequences are too great.
I hate the govt forms asking for "race." I always check "other" and write in "human." If everyone did that, we could be rid of all the racist nonsense.
