See if you can determine what keeps him focused, grounded, who's company calms, what routines work best. I'd say (not being any kind of MD) he's gonna have to rewire parts of his brain and psyche. Favorite things?? Music in particular will bring healing.
Hold on to that kite.

He started singing something under his breath, and I googled the lyric... found the song and played it for him.
Pretty soon he was singing at the top of what lungs he has available to him, and the nurses were coming in to listen... they were overjoyed to see him smiling and said "keep on signing, we're having fun out here".
I left for the day on that high note with the joyous sound of my boy's voice in my ears.
As I was reading these latest posts, WDVX played this song. I love both these musicians simply because they're both SO good- Darrell Scott once played at the Shed here in Maryville. The next day I led him and Danny Thompson on a local ride- fun day!
Go see either one of these guys if you get a chance. And, I say, all of youn's, LISTEN to this.
Matthew- check in with his wife and kids about what his favorite tunes/songs might be. Seriously- music can be some of the best medicine for about anything.
He's an old school punk, loves the Sex Pistols, Antiflag, etc...
He enjoys many styles of music, but punk is the thing that makes him tick.
He's back to being confused this morning, and has a sitter with him in his room, nice young man named Adam. They're watching TV, and I'm sitting here doing some remote work.
I checked in with the ladies at the nurse's station, and yesterday's x-rays show pulmonary edema and pneumonia. But, they say it's not getting worse... however it's not getting better. He needs to be doing his breathing exercises when I'm not here. I'll have to lean on them to help with that when I'm gone. I'm planning to depart tomorrow for home, because he is steadily improving and not much else I can do here.
This hospital is really nice, and the people here are pretty fan-damn-tastic. I'm glad he landed in this place, rather than some of the others around here.
Just talking/thinking about lung problems causes a physical reaction for me. Grew up with asthma, luckily, I grew out of it in my 20's.
Bless his heart. And lungs. And soul, and spirit. Matthew, be sure to listen to that song I posted... methinks your son, et al would appreciate it as well.

Matthew get him a KJV Bible to read. Start with the New Testament.
John 8:12 - King James Version (KJV) 12. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-28 King James Version (KJV) 16. Rejoice evermore. 17. Pray without ceasing. 18. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19. Quench not the Spirit. 20. Despise not prophesyings. 21. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22. Abstain from all appearance of evil. 23. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 25. Brethren, pray for us. 26. Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss. 27. I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren. 28. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Departure plans are made. Going back to the hospital in the morning with the Spyder packed. Leaving from there around noon, and will bunk with Tom and Laurie in Prescott AZ for the night. Then departing at zero-dark-thirty and will be travelling across I-40 towards Arkansas.
Anybody in North Texas or Western Oklahoma feeling hospitable? I can push straight through to Greenwood Arkansas, but since I'm losing hours going that direction it's going to be rough with darkness falling on me faster than my Westbound trip.
I can catnap in the driver seat if necessary, or get a cheap room somewhere... might be the way to go.
Last time I did that run from here (just north of Prescott) I was humming "Amarillo by Morning" but ended up running straight through to my sisters place in Iowa with a couple of naps at rest stops.
