My grandma worked for a company and gambled her retirement on that companies stocks. My grandma drew social security and never made it to Hawaii. My one regret is that I didn't make a concerted effort after the military to take her there. I don't knock people with 401ks or that gamble on their house being worth something at retirement. I do knock people that are young enough but won't go do something they want to do or see.
I'm not relying on it by any stretch - it's "untouchable" money as far as I'm concerned, and I don't have any of it earmarked for any of my expenses or anything. Sitting there for a very, VERY dark day if needed.
Still pisses me off to see it drop that much in a 24 hour period though.

US ARMY Leadership Graduation ceremony in Korea (think empty stadium):
Eighth Army Wightman NCO Academy · The 04-20 BLC graduation on 28 FEB 2020 will be a closed ceremony for students and Academy cadre only.
Unfortunately, all family memebers, service members, unit leadership, student sponsors, Commanders, and CSMs will NOT be allowed entry into the NCOA for graduation.
After the short graduation ceremony all students will quickly exit the NCOA campus and report to their parent unit or follow their Command guidance. This health precautionary measurement is in line with HPCON Charlie for COVID-19 and final approval by the order of 8th Army CDR & CSM.

From The Washington Post: Former HHS secretary says Trump is ‘last person’ who should be talking about science Rep. Donna Shalala (D-Fla.) who served as the health and human services secretary in Bill Clinton’s administration, chastised Trump over his planned news briefing this evening, arguing that only medical professionals and scientists should be speaking to the public about the coronavirus.
Shalala said during an appearance on MSNBC that this was especially so when it comes to Trump.
“This is an anti-science administration,” she said. “The last person the American people trust is the president of the United States talking about science."
Her statement came before our President had a press conference which included members of the Coronavirus Task Force speaking from the podium. The left attacks even in this situation and make fools of themselves.

Fools they are. No doubt it's critical to have input from medical personnel. From there, leaders have to decide how to deal with the situation. Like it or not, politics weighs heavily into dealing with this. With any luck, the US will start to really think about what it means to be dependent on a supply chain that is completely dependent on goods from a single country. I've had some major purchases planned for the next few months. Planned to put them off until after we have closed on the house we are selling. We just made the decision to make those purchases right now. Supply of many things may tighten suddenly, and prices will go up rapidly, if you can get things at all. Have you got enough TP to get you through a quarantine of your town?
Bad news... The video below shows another 14 new cases from people that were released from the quarantine on the cruise ship. There's solid and obvious proof that this virus has been mishandled from the start. IMO most people in the US will greatly feel the effects of this virus, even if it's kept in check in the US.
I’m amazed at the diversity of opinions on this from people I follow on Twitter. I figure it makes sense to make some preparations, like stocking up on food staples in case this thing gets wide spread and disrupts our food supplies.
I contacted a friend who’s something of a “prepper” and asked him where he’d gotten his emergency food that he’d acquired a year or two previously. I checked out the site he recommended; they normally guarantee 2-day delivery. They had a disclaimer posted yesterday morning saying that due to 100X normal demand, deliveries are taking up to one month currently and they’ve bumped that to 5 weeks as of yesterday afternoon.
Clearly a lot of people are worried about this thing.
Clearly a lot of people are worried about this thing.
Clearly explains why the President has taken the tact he has. I honestly hope that the US has enough space between people to limit the spread. We all need to start washing everything we touch and not carry used snot rags around.
At this point, saturation nuclear bombing of China wouldn't stop the spread, just slow it a bit. ( the right time for that was probably 1951...Sarcasm )
I'm not worried about food distribution. You'd need a full blown epidemic to do that, and the FOOD comes from here. ( lots of fresh produce comes from S. America )
But if you lust after a NEW NEW Iphone, or Chinese TV, then you might have to wait a bit.
To be honest, you'd be better off paying $20 more for a S. Korean made electronic gizmo anyway, ( if that alternative exists ) both in quality and the whole not supporting mass murdering thugs viewpoint. But that's just my opinion. And I've been hypocritical on that, myself.
I'm still waiting to see what realistic numbers are for mortality and spread. I'm just assuming ANYTHING Chinese media says is a lie.
The worst danger in this whole mess just might be the Democrat Socialist Candidates giving PANIC! speeches 24/7 supported by a biased Propaganda machine that would be happy to see a financial disaster, If it means Trump loses. That's not speculation, many have openly said so.
Be careful when watching someone with a white board crunching numbers. I look at what the death rate percentage wise for the flu is compared to the death rate percentage wise for the V. Once the V gets the foothold the flu has, I want to see the white board nay sayers kicked in the jewels for pushing statistical magic acts. My hope right now is that we can get to summer and it slows down the V's spread.
I think supply chains for all sorts of manufactured items are at risk. Sure you could get your electronic gizmo that came from S. Korea. Or can you? Do they rely on any components that come from elsewhere? Of course they do. Made in the USA? Good luck with that when so many components and raw materials are imported.
I certainly don't mean to sound alarmist, but adjustments will have to be made. The first adjustments are likely to be shortages and price increases. I would be thrilled to be wrong.
I don't know if our government would quarantine cities or geographical areas. It's the thing to do if you want to manage spread of a virus, but would have lots of people screaming. And it's an election year.
Read Tom Clancy's Executive Orders. Biowar during an election year.
The "good" news is a growing realization that making everything in China was a Bad Idea . The bad news is it will take time to bring back the manufacturing capacity to make stuff here again.
