To add context, morning news reports 2011 flu cases & 5 deaths this season. In Monroe County NY. Which has a population of about 750k. Or one neighborhood in Hunan city. ( a bit more than a large apartment complex; ) )
I dont think that's true. On both parts of that statement. Flu isn't cured. The symptoms are treated. And you aren't doomed if you get Coronovirus. Look at the posted stats.
From what I have read, a good portion of those that have died were older or had a preexisting condition.
According to an ABC story on 1-31-20, over 10K people have died in the US so far during the 19-20 Flu season.
And in China, preexisting condition may mean your social score. Or street camera ID at a protest.
Coronavirus is apparently more virulent, goes between people easier, than today's influenza. Higher death rate, it you pretend China doesn't count. ( Or assume every number from there is as imaginary as a balrog )
We won't have a solid feel for how bad until we get more data. Personally, I'm thinking the Cruise ship in quarantine in Japan is the microcosm that will be most informative.
Some viruses, including influenza, which causes flu, can be ”cured” - sort of. Tamiflu comes to mind. It does’t “cure” you, but it does prevent the virus from replicating in your cells. Your immune system cures you. It dramatically reduces symptoms and shortens the illness by 1-2 days. Not having your cells create more of the virus you’re combatting before exploding and dying? I’d call that a win, but not quite a cure.
But not without limits and side effects. It's only for type A & B flu. Doesn't work on Colds, and may or may not do anything at all for other virus diseases.
In other words may be useless on Coronavirus. Or not. I haven't seen the results yet.
Side effects include hallucinations and "self harm" and while rare, those seem to be really an issue with children.
Also, flu vaccines won't work if you're taking Tamiflu. Which should be a big Duh! to reasonably smart people, but is worth remembering. To be clear, taking Tamiflu a week or more ( check with your doc for exact timing ) after you get vaccinated shouldn't be a problem. But taking the vaccine while you are on a drug to slow virus replication keeps it from reliably triggering the immune response meant to teach your body what to fight.

My understanding is that tamiflu only works on the various mutations of the influenza virus. Hence, tamiFLU. Antivirals have come a long way in the last 10 years. I think, mostly, as a result of research into HIV.
Tamiflu may even be as stupid to use on viruses it only works a little on, as using antibiotics that do nothing at all useful.
If you kill off the bacteria that Can be killed by a particular antibiotic, you leave in the body germs that are immune. Breeding super bugs nothing can stop except cremation of the dead. Thus using antibiotics when not needed or useful is playing Russian roulette on ironic multiple scales.
Ditto the kitchen sink approach of using Tamiflu every time a new virus hits the news. Instead of targeted protection, you actually open up living space in your own body for viruses Tamiflu is useless to treat, displacing ones your immune system is already adapted to & keeping under control. Since a noticeable percentage of your body mass is viruses that you coexist with that won't hurt you as long as your immune system is functional, this means literally pounds...
Feel free to criticize Evolutionary guesses aka theory when it comes to creating complex life forms. On the macro/micro individual human scale Survival of the fittest is real as death.
That's not to say you shouldn't use Tamiflu if prescribed by a competent doctor for a virus it works on if you really need it. But you shouldn't Demand it because of a tv commercial or Internet rumor.
