Enjoy! I had hoped to come this year, but had responsibilities... maybe next year. Or another socially responsible unauthorized thing later. ( motorcycle solo is dynamic social distancing! Dodge, weave...) |

Sad I missed the fun. Of all weekends to be sick, NOT the Rona but still not a great time to be sick. For someone who never gets sick, I get something in the most sterile time in recent history! Most likely due to 2 weeks of 15 to 18 hour days.Be safe everyone. |

So I made it home last night, here are pics as promised.
Scenic overlook in NC at dawn.
Georgia in a nutshell
Ribs at Jim's
On the Richard Russel
Chicken sausage with peppers and onions at Jim's.
Matt asked about the ribs at Dinosaur. Well this is the answer.
A stream blocked my path
A damn Prius rubbing it in. I did make a quick attempt at crossing with just sticking my rear wheel in, the rocks were slippery so I didn't have confidence of keeping things upright so I turned around.
A guy named Kevin had a spill on Wolf Pen, and went off the cliff approaching the downhill hair pin U-turn. He was ok, just some light scrapes. The bike isn't too bad, there didn't appear to be any structural damage to the bike and we drove it into the back of my truck before hauling it to his home an hour or so away.
The Cherrycola Skyway was closed right at the TN/NC border, apparently they think that will keep my Coronavirus carrying ass out! (Spoilers, it did)
Great advice from TWoS.

I wish I had been there, but there's always next October. I feel sorry for Kevin. I'm glad you guys had fun. Why is the Cherohala closed? Yes; Jim's ribs are better that the Dinosaur's, but the Dinosaur has a unique atmosphere. Someday, you have to come by here and we'll go to Velvet Smoke and you can try the flat best Burnt Ends I've ever tasted. I think that both Ourdee and Tootal will agree that they're first rate. Bill's Toasty Shop in Taylorsville. Truly wonderful burgers and at an incredibly low price! I just looked it up on Google maps and it's about 30 miles (29.9) from the Fairgrounds. The May mile has moved to Labor Day weekend again, in case you (or anybody else) might be interested. Springfield will be the only Flat Track event I attend this year. |

Matt, I have always liked the way your bike looks. I would love to find a SV1000 tweak it a little. The quad exhaust you have would be on the short list. |

Thank you! The quad exhaust is called Lazer Xtreme... but it's the carbon fiber X1 windscreen that really pulls the whole thing together. An SV with a quad exhaust would be an interesting thing, twice as many cans as, well... cans. The Z1000 has been faithful to me for 12 years, never left me stranded anywhere. She has enough power for whatever I feel like, and I just don't have the heart to kick her out of bed just because she's a little buzzy around 5500rpm. Her storage space is a little spartan, to say the least. I don't need much, though... and this trip proved it. Everything fit in my backpack and tail bag. Hammock, tarp, stakes, under quilt, chair, knife, axe, shillelagh, and lots of cordage. And whiskey. |

Matthew, when you use the backpack is the weight on your shoulders? I remember years ago I rode a SR500 Yamaha to Kansas City and the weight of the backpack was really getting to me by the time I got there. On the way home the light bulb went off. I loosened the straps and let the pack rest on the seat instead of my shoulders. I know you have the cover over that back of your seat but you could throw that in the backpack and put the weight on the seat. You may already do that, you just stirred a memory. |

I have a tail bag, and the backpack pretty much rests on that. The pack is tall, so it catches a lot of wind, and I did feel some fatigue from that even after the 1 hour ride to Suches. Wearing a backpack on a motorcycle, at least in my opinion, is suboptimal at best. My saddlebags that I've had forever don't work on the Z1K because of the angle my pipes come up... the exhaust would blow right into them. |
