https://www.uab.edu/reporter/know-more/publication s/item/8909-here-s-a-playbook-for-stopping-deadly- cytokine-storm-syndrome, A cheap, simple test, widely available at most hospitals in the United States and worldwide, can help diagnose cytokine storm syndrome, Cron said. “A protein called serum ferritin tends to get very high in this disorder,” he said. “If you are sick enough to be in a hospital and you have a fever, you should get a serum ferritin. It typically comes back in less than 24 hours and almost every hospital can do it, and if it’s high you can work them up for cytokine storm syndrome.”At Cron’s urging, the ICU at Children’s Hospital recently added serum ferritin screens to its routine procedures. “The day after we did that we identified a patient and we’ve had three kids in the last couple of months that we’ve identified,” Cron said. Cron hopes that “Cytokine Storm Syndrome” will help spread this life-saving knowledge more widely in the medical profession. “We have this thing in medicine called Occam’s Razor, which encourages us to gather the data and come up with one unifying diagnosis for what’s going on,” Cron said. “But this is the opposite — you can have juvenile arthritis, or lupus or T-cell leukemia, and then you have cytokine storm syndrome on top of that. And if you don’t treat the cytokine storm syndrome directly, patients can die. “If we get to the point where people know about it and don’t have to call me to find out, that would be success.” The article is informative.
Jeff, That is a good point. A guy on another forum has a book containing a chapter on coronaviruses. He said, "The virus itself is very small, but it is an enveloped virus, meaning it has some of the cell wall of its host on the outside. This type of virus does not survive long outside of the host and host secretions (droplets) - a number of environmental factor kill it quickly with no droplet protection. So it is mainly the droplets (much larger than the virions) that the filters are aimed at. If you can keep it out of your respiratory tract, eyes and broken skin, you should be OK."
Dont forget Contagion! Us CEO gets super flu in Hong Kong.
All jokes aside, the Resident Evil logo is strange. AND in the WWZ novel, the first outbreak during the zombie apocalypse happens in New Dachung, which is near the Three Gorges Dam. The Three Gorges dam is 240 miles from Wuhan... coincidence?
As I was sitting in the local carniceria waiting for my tacos al pastor, the Spanish language news channel was talking about only two things:
1) Corona Virus 2) Impeachment
Two things occurred to me as I watched the repetitive images looping on the screen, showing people with germ masks scurrying around as if they could actually run from a virus:
A) They should just drink Dos Equis, no need to worry about Corona.
B) Fake news is everywhere.
They (the proverbial they, them) are doing their level best to scare the shit out of people. In every language.
Once you fill the hospitals it becomes hard to confirm new cases. It is hard to count the dead when they are dieing at home. I have been told the police are searching for this guy:
Crusty, that's bad math. You have to wait until you have more data to get a percentage. The 11,000 still sick have to recover or not...
Unfortunately all those numbers are probably fake. There are many more as yet undiscovered in other countries. And The Chinese numbers? At least a magnitude low. More likely closer to 100,000 sick and unknown number dead. Quite possibly 5 times that. Or more. In another month?
Earlier guesses were a 5% fatality rate.
There's going to be a big difference between Chinese and Western rates because of health care availability. A Western isolated case in a not overwhelmed hospital on the other side of the planet is going to get care and drugs that isn't available in a crowded hospital where they have sick people laying on the floor in hallways because all the beds are full and staff is overworked.
So to put a bunch of time and resources and effort to finding a vaccine for this one strain of a virus — although it sounds heroic, and that’s what we want everyone to be doing, right now — but the truth is, we need to contain the virus. The virus will die out, and then we’ll be onto the next virus, next year.
I hope he's right and this dies out soon.
Had a discussion about Chinese food markets with my niece, who was there as a student intern 2 years ago. She bought all her food at Wal-Mart. Initially she was angry at my bringing it up, since previous idiots were being mean about Chinese people being dirty. When I blamed the pre-medieval agriculture system, she calmed down. And...yep, the meat markets are scary.
And... Yep, next year there will be another virus, out of China, again, and tens of thousands will die, again. Just like this year. And the Chinese dictatorship will lie, again. As Always.
Of course it is. We should wait until 5500 people have died; then we can claim a 50% mortality rate. Right now, though it sure looks like a 50% rate from here. How long should we wait?
However, those numbers are statistics; and Mark Twain described statistics concisely. They can be twisted to mean whatever you want them to mean. Just ask the Democrat Party or the Climate Change alarmists.
What's it really mean? Who can you believe anymore? Where will it all end? What is it getting you? Why don't you go home to your wife?
