Just got back from the vet. My Basenji has lymphoma. Waiting on the test results to see how aggressive the cancer is.

He's had lipomas for years, my first Basenji had them too, which are just little fat deposits here and there around the body. Noticed some swelling under his jaw recently, which came up pretty quick. Now we know. Well, I get to tell M. when she gets home in about a half hour. Geez, this sucks.

Of course, we all know this is part of the deal when we adopt cats or dogs. Parrots have to be worked into your will when you die. Dogs and cats wear out a lot faster. Mine's expiration date is TBD. Gonna be a rough ride.

My options are chemo, prednisone, and euthanasia. Obviously the first isn't a great idea- my sis, who works as a hospital chaplain, said in so many words "oh hell no", not to put an animal through that. So, we wait for the test results, and final prognosis. Then, we plan the endgame.

If any of youn's have experience with this, I'd appreciate advice. Thanks.

Well, it depends on how you look on the animals. Dogs and cats are just food in China and another countries, like chicken or cows here, and they end up them with a shot of pneumatic water jet gun in the head. In theory in is painless process for the animal since there are no sensetive neurons in the brain.

Squids,

We're going through the same thing with my son's cocker spaniel, Maggie. She is 13 almost 14 and in addition the fatty tumors we knew about, we've found two ugly growths on her. One under her right ear and one on her back right leg. We have an appointment at the vet in about 45 minutes to confirm what I think I already know.

I hope you get some more time with your little guy and he has a great quality of life right up to the end.

Damn but I'm dreading this.

Tphak, do you keep any animals as pets? Friends? Companions? "Furbabies"?

I don't have, and AFAIK won't have kids.

I have seen the movie "No Country For Old Men".

Try again.

I know a mobile veterinarian who's a friend. She helped me and a former GF put down her cat. She's a good soul, trusted, she'll be the one.

We all will die. Hopefully on our terms. I'll do my best by my dog. He fought three women to take samples for testing. I couldn't watch.

Tphak:

What an ignorant and horribly insensitive comment. If not for Squids post in response, I'd have just deleted it.

First, many Chinese have pet dogs or cats.

Second, dogs or cats as food stock in China is actually very rare. Far more become pets or service animals.

Third, after all the amazing service (military, search, rescue, police, service, medical, emotional support, etc.) and relationships provided by dogs, your comment is beyond disrespectful.

People have eaten other people too, entire societies were canibalistic, how's your logic work on that?

Brad,

So sad to here that awful news. I always enjoy your posts about the exploits of your dear Basenji.

Dogs are tough. I'd consider the chemo if it gave a decent chance of success. He's still a young dog relatively speaking, no?

Darrell is fixin' to turn 12 and has some of those fatty tumors. I'm always wondering about having them removed, whether or not it's worth the ordeal.

I'd hate to leave him at the vet. He actually likes to go, loves all the attention, huge people loving dog.

Funny story: When the time came, I had Michele deliver him for his neutering first thing in the morning. I retrieved him later that same day right before closing I'm not sure if he'd be so eager to go back into the vets office if she were taking him in. Hah!

I took Darrell home that day against the wishes of the vet techs there. They actually told me "we can't let you take him." LOL! They thought it necessary for him to be left alone all night rather than have me looking after him. I said, well, we're going home. "We'll have to call the doctor" they said. Fine by me, I'll be on my way home with my dog regardless.

I don't abide authoritative baloney. They'd brought him out for a visit, he was fine, just needed confinement to keep from over-exerting himself. And of course the cone of shame.

I hope the best for your boy.

Chemo has come a long way in the last few years. It still sucks, but it’s not like before. I wouldn’t rule it out.

My sister went through chemo a few years back, and didn't miss a day of work. Mostly sucks for a day right after. Hers was precautionary after a lumpectomy.

It still is the treatment of near death, but apparently it has a decent success rate. And dogs are so darned tough when it comes to ordeals like that.

I just spoke with a great woman, a Veterinary MD., whom I've known for decades. She'll be the one to help us out. To help D'Ogee on.

All is well.

Cows serve us too, they give us milk, meat, leather, food for your dogs and cats, etc.

I'm not telling you kill it with a fire. I'm telling you do same we do for another animals serve us.

If you can heal it then good for you.

Nobody here needs you telling them anything, scent maybe an apology for being an insensitive argumentative jerk. Blake - BadWeB Custodian

Dogs serve us. Cats too. We obtain them and claim them as companions. That would be what we call a pet.

I see a spirit in all the animals I've known. Seen several pass. It doesn't make it easier.

Speaking about killing the animal we have to choose the most painless process for the animal, not the one you like better because of you think it gives more appreciation and respect for the animal.

All 4 past posts are valid. I'll have it done at home.

He's very vigorous today. A 30.3 pound dog took the doctor and two techs to control for blood and tumor samples.

Waiting for test results, prognosis.

Thank you all for your input, and love, spirit, and such.

Brad I'm sorry to hear this. I know how you love this guy. Over these years of our friendship I have seen that the only things you love more than motorcycles are your dogs. Not counting Marcia of course.

Last year I had to put down the favorite dog of my life. 17 years of loyal friendship and love. It was a tough time for sure. I still miss her and her antics. She was a Black Lab Shepherd mix with the best attitude in the world.

With the poke of her nose lifting my arm she could lift my spirits of the entire day. Damn dog always had a smile on!

I wish you well through this tough time.

Man that sucks. I remember when I had to euthanize my last dog. I felt like an axe murderer for weeks. I SWORE up and down I was going to get a parrot so I'd never have to go through this again. And then I was adopted by an adorable little gray kitten. I had her for 18 wonderful years and now my wife was adopted by the crazy tuxedo cat living with us for the past eight years. My mother passed away last year and now I have her 19 year old cat as well.

I really feel for you, Brad. I, like all above, have been through similar situations and like so many expressed so well above, it is much tougher than I ever imagined before experiencing it. I would definitely consider the chemo as a viable option but whichever path you chose try not to beat yourself up. The very best to you.

Tpehak:

Equating livestock to the life saving services provided by rescue dogs, war dogs, police canines etc is quite the stretch and way off track. Sometimes it's best to just be quiet. You've not yet learned that lesson. But you can. Try.

Let me put it this way. This particular dog did not do rescue work, did not participate in the war, did not serve police. If you are saying livestock is not equal to the life saving services why do you equalize the dogs did this service and the dog did not do this service?

Tpheck, I'd love for you to meet D'Ogee. Several of you have met him. Whatever you believe, all animals have a spirit.

Like I said, it depends on how you look on the animals.

We also can not apply term eutanasia to animals. Human can not understand if animal wants to die or not. We just decide to kill animal based on our own feelings. We just want to believe we do the best for the animal because of it makes us feel better, but we do not know the truth, we do not know what animal wants, we do not know what animal feels is such situation.

I'm so sorry to hear about your wonderful furkid. I have enjoyed reading about him in your posts over the years, and my heart goes out to you and Marcia more than any words I can say.

I truly believe you will do what is best for your boy. May you have peace, serenity, and love. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
