I know of an Allison T 63 engine that's part of an estate. Where's the best place to sell it and what's it worth? I don't think there's any paperwork with it. I don't know how many hours are on it, or even if it runs at all. But it's got to be worth enough to help out a poor widow. | ||

I tried using Google, but it really wasn't much help. This engine falls into the "Barn Find" or Estate Sale" category. It's literally a Barn Find. It was on a bench in the back of the shed with a tarp over it. I can't find any paperwork on it at all. I'm not an A&P Mechanic and I'm unfamiliar with this engine. I had a hard time just finding the data plate with the make, model and serial number. It may be freshly rebuilt or completely clapped out; I have no idea which. I'm just trying to help out a widow who was caught unprepared when her husband died. I'm hoping that somebody on this forum might know more than me about how and where to sell it and what it's worth. So far, it looks like it's worth between 10 and 20 grand, from what I've seen. | ||

Sorry to be a bummer, but without paperwork, it has to be overhauled to go in normal aircraft types. A home builder can use it, if it runs, without an overhaul, but the price would be less. A really deep hole to throw money into. I wouldn't get her hopes up on big money. It's worth something, but barn find turboshaft engines? Niche demand. | ||

Without the records it’s going to require a chunk of change to be used in any aircraft. Better half had a Dassault Falcon 10 and rebuild of 2 Garrets was not insignificant expense. | ||

As a licensed A&P mechanic, some observations. Per the FAA, in the US, all aircraft parts, down to nuts and bolts and cotter pins, need a 'cradle to grave' documented paperwork history. In addition, some helicopter parts, like transmissions and engines, are life-limited. Once they reach a predetermined level of use hours, they must be retired. Even if in like new condition, they are no longer usable in a helicopter. With no paperwork, the engine is basically a paperweight/conversation piece. IF someone can be located who is looking to create a non-aircraft use, like a Mad Max vehicle, for example, then whatever they offer would be reasonable. Hope this information is useful. Dave | ||

Correct. A builder of Experimental aircraft can use a timed out turbine engine. They are built with substantial cushion. But they usually buy engines pulled from service by airlines ( with all the paperwork ) and only a tiny handful seek engines in that size range. A barn find engine is a big gamble and I'd expect to invest $10,000 in inspection and parts, minimum, to just verify it can be used at all. There are a couple of companies that offer known good used ( and documented exactly how used up ) engines, and very few builders are frugal enough, and Big enough gamblers at the same time, to risk their lives and their expensive in cash & labor projects on an unknown this expensive. | ||
