Being a proud grandpa of 4 girls and 3 boys, I have found they each, as they Pass two or three years of age, are exposed to childhood diseases in elementary school from those who actually go there.
I am particularly susceptible to the swollen gland, feverish, burning headache, coughing tons of mucus, ear infections of the youth.
My Dr has been impressed that I still get it at my age. Well, time to call him to discuss treatment for it again. Been down a week now. Swollen glands just popped up tonite.
Right now, I'd have to be doing twice as good to feel like shit.
I travel for a living. Used to travel for a living to hospitals.
Nothing like riding around in pressurized petri dishes breathing the recycled air of 140 of your closest friends.
I swear by Airborne tablets. Chew 4-8 a day. It will amp up your immune system.
Vitamin D is also a must have. Most folks "of a certain age" are Vitamin D deficient. It is the yin to the yang of vitamin C, plus it'll help with bone density.
Vern; get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with every cold remedy known to man. Take them all, and if it doesn't kill you, you'll start feeling better in a week to 10 days.
Whisky. Seriously. Sip 1 oz as you watch TV in the evening. GOOD whisky, not Jack or any bourbon blends. It'll burn it out of you.
+1,000 on Airborne, and the chewables are actually pretty tasty (the effervescent water-mix stuff is NASTY).
I keep a jar of the Nature's-whatever Vitamin C gummies on my TV table next to "the chair". Eat 'em like skittles in the evening - helps curb snacking, and loads me up on C. If I eat too many, I pee in technicolor - so it's fun all around!
That's one thing I learned in the hospital in '08 - I'm never more than arms-reach away from some vitamin water. Generally house-brand MIO alternatives at work (liquid squeezie-bottle concentrates) and Propel powder at home...but that stuff is becoming its own food group for me.
The witch Dr in there could likely handle my flying mucus condition ..... Sha-cocca!
No question where I was exposed and when. My turn to watch her came with a yellow bubbling snot factory. She had been to the Dr and got her meds, but was infectious.
I do need more C. Mostly I need sunshine and 80 degrees.
Change brands. I recommend Laphroaig, or Bunnehabbain. Or if you like vanilla, try Knot - more liqueur in reality, but still a single. Another outstanding single is Suntory Yamazaki - mmmmm, good.
Awesome, Vern! +1000 on getting to the doc- we've got a close friend about your age that ended up with double pneumonia, coughing up blood before he called 911. He firmly believes the paramedics saved him.
