A little late to post but I'm more than a little thrilled at NASA's success this week with sticking the landing of Insight. We're seeing the beginning of a NEW NASA - with alliances with commercial operations such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Virgin leaving them the bandwidth to take on the higher-risk, DARPA-esque projects such as Mars exploration. NASA is also returning to their roots with work at Armstrong out here - as they refer to "The First A" in NASA. There is some significant work being done that never makes the headlines, significant nonetheless. They've returned to the X-Planes! Recently X-56, X-57 and research into advanced aerodynamic theories that borrow on Prandtl and Horten's work from the '30s and '40's with their PRANDTL flight test programs validating inherent stability and control of flying wings WITHOUT computer stability augmentation. In our tech-geek world, we have a new geek-meme. Image shows (left to right): Julie Wertz-Chen, Entry, Descent and Landing systems engineer, NASA JPL, Aline Zimmer, Systems Engineer, NASA JPL, center, and Christine Szalai, Technical Group Supervisor, Mission Commentator, NASA JPL. Aline Zimmer may have a bright future at NASA - but few at NASA get to start out their career as a MEME! (Message edited by slaughter on December 02, 2018) |

I hadn't noticed the difference. NASA doing what NASA's been doing, since the retirement of the shuttle program. |
