Devout Christians despairing of a society in full malodorous rot look to The Rule of St. Benedict. Classicists might pick up a volume of Seneca, sighing wistfully as they contemplate the philosopher’s fate at the hands of his mad pupil, Emperor Nero, who, unlike President Donald Trump, at least played a musical instrument competently. A more twisted few will reach for Machiavelli. For those undergoing real tests of the soul, however, the place to go is J. R. R. Tolkien’s modern epic, The Lord of the Rings. The author follows with a warning to #nevertrumpers to not ally with the power that is... Trump, naturally... It is the temptation to accommodate oneself to the nature of the times, as Machiavelli would have put it, and to ally—cautiously but definitely—with the Power that is rather than the principles that were. And that is where Tolkien comes in. His masterwork—the six books in three volumes, not the movies with their unfortunate elisions, occasional campiness and spectacular computer-generated images—addresses many themes relevant to our age, not least of which is that temptation. At the beginning of Book II, elves, men, and dwarfs have gathered at Rivendell, home of Lord Elrond. Toward the end of their deliberations they hear a report from Gandalf, the wizard who had befriended Frodo, and who had been taken prisoner by Saruman, the most senior wizard of his order, and escaped. Saruman had learned that the Ring had fallen into the possession of the hobbit, and he wanted Gandalf to help him get it. Gandalf reports Saruman’s pitch as follows. “A new Power is rising. Against it the old allies and policies will not avail us at all. There is no hope left in Elves or dying Númenor. This then is one choice before you, before us. We may join with that Power. It would be wise, Gandalf. There is hope that way. Its victory is at hand; and there will be rich reward for those that aided it. As the Power grows, its proved friends will also grow; and the Wise, such as you and I, may with patience come at last to direct its courses, to control it. We can bide our time, we can keep our thoughts in our hearts, deploring maybe evils done by the way, but approving the high and ultimate purpose: Knowledge, Rule, Order; all the things that we have so far striven in vain to accomplish, hindered rather than helped by our weak or idle friends. There need not be, there would not be, any real change in our designs, only in our means.” And there you have it. Ally with the rising power (Sauron is making his ashen, desolate homeland, Mordor, great again) and use your wisdom to contain and guide it. Your old friends and allies are fools or weaklings. Go along with the inevitable, and you may shape the new world; oppose it, and you will simply fail and perish......... There's more, and worth the read... But. I see the Power that Tempts as the Lies Of Socialism. The promise of unlimited power, unlimited ability to do good, once you have gained ultimate power, riding the most evil religion the world has ever seen, then, you think your wisdom and morals will moderate the killing, control the Beast, and finally achieve the Promise of Order & Control. That's the ongoing trap. It has never happened. Ever. I call the Marxist creeds the most evil religions. The reason is the priests of Baal or the Aztecs didn't have the Enlightenment and the "modern" belief that there is no present & active God(s) moving the stars and making the weather. They honestly, or cynically, believed that throwing babies in the fire would please their God(s), and their beliefs were not that different than those who followed, including the Judeo-Christian churches that sacrificed cows, or sheep, to the fires so that the smell could please their Deity. Potlach, burning wealth, if not animals, continued for a long time, and is still practiced today. ( to the discomfort of those who think they are superior in their secular views ) I'm sure the High Priests of the ancient religions were, some of them, cynical manipulators, as were some of the earliest shaman of the cave man tribes, "If I sit back home and cast spells for a good hunt, I don't have to go sweat with the men of the tribe and risk my neck spearing a mammoth" But not all, and they sure didn't have thousands of years of written history, philosophy, and religious thought to guide them, just the teachings of the elders of the tribe, by word of mouth...and if lucky, paintings in the sacred cave. But Marx, Engles, etc. all DID have the history of faith, reason, Enlightenment, philosophy, and cynicism to draw upon when they created their New Religion by stealing the bits they liked from the older ones. They Deliberately designed the Lies to steal power, and one of the lies is "After the Revolution, while the Masses are being educated to understand how to run a Pure Communism, a Temporary Committee will be necessary to guide them until they are Enlightened to the Way". Never, in the more than a Century since these cults of murder and lies were created to overthrow the Aristocracy and Substitute the Leaders Of The Revolution, has the Temporary Committee ever seen fit to dissolve itself.... The Masses Never become Enlightened, the Rulers are To Important To Fail, and the Scam, stealing from everyone, is just too damn good to give up. A few hundred million murdered later, and more than half the planet oppressed... that's the gift of Evil. BTW if you think Tolkien wasn't commenting on the political situation of his day, post WW1, you missed a crap ton of allegory. | ||

I've read Aristophanes, and he was funnier. I'll skip the obvious joke about how real men wouldn't want to have sex with these women. It's not really true, and Real men are what the "striker" need. I am, in fact, so sorry this lady hadn't found a not selfish, Real man who doesn't feel entitled to pleasure while neglecting her's. The politics here is one of disappointment and rage. Choose a better man, & don't look for one who has the childish entitlement collectivist mindset, you'll get the same. Find a guy who has is enthusiastic about DOING & MAKING THINGS. Enjoy taking a ride in/on his bike, car, truck, airplane, recreational vehicle. Is he a Good driver? Smooth, daring, polite? Does he pay attention? Is the workmanship decent? He might have an old rust bucket, but do the lights work? Does he care about the passenger? Is he arrogant? Or confident? That's enough clues. Good luck. | ||

\rant on... Last week I was adding an exhaust spacer to my Jeep as part of a lift kit. It's nothing more than a pair of stainless steel machined spacers and 4 bolts. Damned if the thing doesn't cause cancer in Kalifornia! Is there anything that doesn't cause cancer in Kalifornia? I can only assume that given that the entire exhaust on the Jeep is stainless steel, held together with bolts, that the original exhaust must also cause cancer. Mind you, we aren't talking about gasses coming out of the tailpipe. Kalifornia is becoming a huge joke. \rant off | ||

Reminds me of the sex classes when I worked at a foundry. With a work force of over 1,200. It was an almost all male environment and near an 80% black demographic. They decided we needed sexual harassment classes taught by two hotties. After all the training about once someone said they didn't appreciate your advances you had to stop, and if you continued at that point it was harassment. They opened the floor to questions. I jumped up with my hand up. Called on, I went into Inspector Clueso mode. I asked, So what you are telling me is that as long as I stop when the other person says to, it is not harassment? They answered, "Yes." I then asked, "So, I get one free grope?" That got them all riled up. I then told them, I was not appreciating their advances. Before they could regain control. I asked, If my boss (who was male) was giving me a back rub and I liked it, That's not harassment is it? They came into the class to teach with a holier than thou attitude. The hostile environment was created and reinforced with a denial of fight or flight method. My fellow students and I did not appreciate the approach that we were all guilty from jump street being male and all. The help and the bosses were all subjected to the farce perpetrated and given the misnomer of training. The bosses all refused to write me up. I never saw those two "trainers" used by the company again. I think it was well known I would have filed a harassment case if they did. What constitutes harassment in Indiana? Harassment" defined. ( 1993) As used in this chapter, "harassment" means conduct directed toward a victim that includes but is not limited to repeated or continuing impermissible contact that would cause a reasonable person to suffer emotional distress and that actually causes the victim to suffer emotional distress. I did not learn a thing that day. | ||
