https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/09/1 7/hillary-clinton-abolish-electoral-college-becaus e-donald-trump-is-destroying-america/ The Democrats would love to abolish the Electoral College. It's designed explicitly to prevent a few high population states from ruling the entire country. Today, CA & NY. It was NY when they wrote the Constitution. Think how wonderful it would be if the other 48 states, most of the country & towns, had no say at all in who becomes President, and it's up to Emperor Cuomo & Moonbeam Brown to determine policy through their proxy President. Wonderful for the elite leftists that rule those states. Not so much for everyone else. We already have a Constitutional crisis falling towards us like the asteroid in Armageddon, as CA and a few other sanctuary states frantically enroll illegal immigrants to vote. How can you prevent organized vote fraud when the state government is the head conspirator? The 2016 election may not have given Hillary a majority by vote fraud by illegals, ( we may never know since CA refused to investigate ) but 2020 may indeed be the end of the Republic as a potential 50 million illegals vote, illegally, for...... Joe Biden? Eliminate the Electoral College and that is a certainty. |

It seems highly unlikely that would ever fly, given that they'd need 38 states to agree to it. I'd like to see the 17th? Amendment repealed and give state legislatures back their electoral control over the senate. |

I think before we go re-writing our Constitution to suit the whim of the moment (after it's worked pretty damned well for the last 200+ years), we need to start doing what it actually says, and quit with all the cronyism and lobbyist "buy your way in" crap. And, two words for Congress and the House: TERM. LIMITS. Lose the "career politician" class, and it will go miles towards losing the "buy-in" lobbyist crap. |

I find it remarkable that people who would murder a Monsanto executive, if they had the opportunity, for poisoning the earth with gmo, are jumping on board the lab grown meat bandwagon. There are air quotes around poisoning the earth. |

Wait. The "convenient protein-density of the food". You mean...its NUTRITIOUS?? And yes, PETA nutjobs care more for the animals than for other humans. Case in point, the rabid idiot at the bicycle store, right after I drove my S2 through a deer at 65mph. I was recounting the story to the clerk who'd asked about my injuries and this vapid woman piped up with a gasp -"the deer didnt suffer any, did it?" Y'know lady, as I lay there in the road covered in blood and (as it turns out) with a broken foot, I wasnt really concerned about the deer. Guessing that since I cut it in half with the motorcycle...it probably died fairly quickly. I'm fine though. Thanks for asking about the human. |

I hunt animals, I teach hunter education, I like prime rib, and other tasty meat products. PETA people ARE nuts. Having prefaced with my credentials as a meat eater, I am all in favor of "fake meat", and I don't mean tofu. I mean lab grown USDA grade A. This question was brought up at a 3D in medicine conference I was at, and all of the panelists wrinkled their noses. But in talking with them after, what they envisioned at the time of the question is what can be done today, not what is possible. I'm thinking of all the time and resources put into growing a cow ( any animal would work in this example but it seems to work best at the large critter end). Instead of growing hooves, eyeballs, hides, bones, and offal, picture those resources, labor, and energy costs in transportation, and processing, going to making the true goal end product, meat. I know there is a genuine use for all of the byproducts, but they are still byproducts, and not the goal. Imagine a continuous ribbon of real (cloned and 3D printed) beef, not pink slime, not even hamburger, but real beef tenderloin, beautifully marbled, and already mesquite flavored if you wish. It would have to taste as good as a free range black angus, with the same texture, and it would also need to be a cheaper alternative before it becomes market worthy. Lab grown diamonds are characteristically often better than the natural versions yet they sell for less. The market still seems to be able to support both natural and lab grown. The big advantage in diamonds is fewer people are exploited for the lab versions. Cattle ranchers like diamond merchants, could then command premium prices for the "genuine beef" label. It's also possible consumer attitudes might make the lab grown the premium. Either way, the free market would decide quickly if lab grown 3D printed meat is a good idea. I have another reason for being a fan. If we can re create animal tissue with 100% of the characteristics we desire, it sets up medical technology to "build" genuine replacement parts for humans injured by accident or illness. Synthesized foods, and the safety requirements to make them, while important, are a much lower bar for businesses to invest in. The return is quicker. L'oreal cosmetics spent ten million dollars on technology to develop 3D printed human skin. They didn't spend that for humanitarian reasons like helping burn victims, (which was my first thought). They did it so they could claim they test their products on real human skin, not animals, and they figured that claim alone would make them more than their money back in sales and marketing in a very short time. I don't want ranching to go away, but I would be willing to try a 3D steak, especially if it isn't $7.89/lb. I make choices every time I go to the grocery store. This would just be one more choice. |

Lab grown tissue/organs make sense for medical use where cost is no object. I culture mammalian cells on a routine basis. I can promise you that the cost of growing meat in a dish will be hundreds to thousands of times more expensive than feeding a cow corn. Instead of a barn and a pasture to grow hundreds of pounds of muscle cells, you'll need a sterile petri dish, with chemically defined medium, in a thermostatically controlled incubator which also maintains a very precise range of pH to grow milligrams of cells. They will only be meat-like if they secrete their own extracellular matrix proteins. Again, it's great and worthwhile if you're growing new cardiac muscle for a person dying of cardiac failure. I don't think the cost will ever make sense to eat something like that on a regular basis when compared with farm-raised animals. If it's a moral issue for someone, and they can afford it, great. I would not try to discourage them. |

The problem with this world now is the idea from some, mostly on the left, that their worldview needs to be forced onto others. If they don't want to eat meat or animal products. Fine. Do what you will. Doesn't matter to me at all. But I will keep on enjoying my steaks, Burgers, Philly Cheese-steaks, Chicken Fajitas, and on and on. |

The problem with this world now is the idea from some, mostly on the left, that their worldview needs to be forced onto others. AMEN. Takes me back to George Carlin's "two knobs" bit, from his fight against the "seven deadly words" for broadcast/censoring. "Don't like what's on the radio? There's two knobs on it, - one changes the station, and the other? (facepalm) Turns it OFF". You don't like what I eat? Fine. Don't eat it. But don't you dare tell me what I can eat, based strictly on what you like or dislike. |

Death to all who eat greens! The smell of badly cooked greens turns my stomach. ( badly cooked anything, really, but I'm being a jerk here for busybody example, I have nothing against you eating what you like ) 'bama's knowledge of medical tissue growth should inform us as to the difficulties of vat grown meat. Gregtonn is also correct in that industrial scale processes will be cheaper, if not faster. It takes over a year to grow a cow to eat. I don't recall the formula, but beef producers have painstakingly calculated the optimum age for the best feed to beef ratio. If a vat takes 3 months from start to finish, it's still faster. Speed isn't the only factor. I'll point out cheese also takes time to grow. Real Parmesan aged naturally vs. Factory Parm-like cheese stuff is obvious, but as long as the consumer has a choice, it's great. You might use cheap cheese for the casserole to pass at the potluck dinner at your church/Legion hall/Lodge, and real crystallized aged cheese for dinner with the in laws. Or vice versa, depending on how refined the tastes are and your attitudes toward each group! I think we all here agree that totalitarian busybody folk who would forbid & demand all aspects of your life are, basically, evil f#$%s even if they are parrots and redeemable if educated to not join the social herd of leftist pathological lying power freaks. I'm sure there are right wing pathological power freaks too, but the last half century have rendered them a minority most of us have no trouble saying, No! to. My basic anti-Democrat rant is that their essential nature as the Party of The Klan, Plantation, & Jim Crow is not much changed in the last century, no matter how many Black faces they pretend to like. And this last century's swing to Marxism neatly dovetails with their racist, slavery loving nature, and taught them to better lie about themselves. My basic anti-Republican rant is the Party of Abolitionists that freed the slaves is still, Abolitionist. They just love to Abolish what they see as evil. That's a good thing, but you have to keep them on a leash, like poorly trained dogs. The just can't help Abolishing Evil. This gave us Prohibition, Organized crime, the perversion of the War on Drugs from treatment to punishment, more organized crime, gang wars, etc.etc. Both Parties have a nasty streak of joyless, busybody buttheads that need to be jerked up short, and told No!, and if they cannot learn, be put down, or isolated from power, to protect society. Rabid dogs. Cannot be tolerated. Today, it's the leftists that are most rabid. Look at Venezuela. The Soviet Empire. Detroit. |

Cheese or steak is relevant. The Nieman-Marxists who promise free everything, are the same people who would ban everything. The facts are real, that raising cows to eat takes more crops than people eating crops would consume, calorie for calorie. Critters concentrate what they eat. Simple truth. Never mind that cows eat different corn than you do, the numbers still work out, gallons of diesel, acres used, labor involved. Meat is a less efficient use of land. But. Meat is concentrated food. A pound of sweet corn vs. a pound of potroast? 480/880 And protein & fat are brain food. ( why vegan super thin models are seldom that smart ) I don't object to you enjoying a no meat lifestyle. Unless you kill your dogs, cats, or children by imposing your whim or ideology. Which does happen, and more often than you'd expect. Healthy vegetarian diet ( pick your version ) requires food like soybeans, that didn't exist in pre-civilization days, and a Neanderthal diet without meat will not be healthy, although if you have no moral qualms about killing people, it would be mildly interesting to measure life spans. ( I do have such qualms, and aren't that interested. Besides, there's plenty of documentation on concentration camps. ) All the above is nonsense, of course, since the environment, fuel use, human health, and morals have nothing to do with the desire of evil people to control other people against their will. That's the bottom line for .Muslim clerics wanting to destroy art, Global Warming Con men wanting to take away your prime rib, and the Klan Party calling racist anyone who points out black people could take care of themselves if the Klan Party didn't run their schools so they don't learn history and ethics, while telling them they can't get ahead. ( and wont, if Democrats are allowed to indoctrinate them for failure ) |

The facts are real, that raising cows to eat takes more crops than people eating crops would consume, calorie for calorie. Critters concentrate what they eat. Simple truth. Only if you consider grazing on range land as "eating crops". People think cattle are fed corn for their whole life. Truth is, they're raised on range land, land that is usually unsuitable for raising food crops, and only when they reach a certain weight (about 900 lbs if I remember correctly) are they sent to market where they are finished on grain at a feedlot before hitting the abattoir. Dairy is a different business. Pork is another. Bottom line is, raising beef is an excellent use of resources. |

Court darn it, now I have to look it up again. Income per capita and money earned in total. You'd think Wall Street, right? But in real dollars made by actually making things...... The link in that post was to show the lack of Whig leadership in Detroit during the subsequent fall. Strokizator, you are correct, both about grazing land & the efficiency of beef production. I skipped that true aspect of meat because logic isn't useful in arguing with leftists. The assumptions usually made are based on those last, fast gaining weeks of a cow's life. You'll notice the desired results of the anti beef people aren't ever "rabbits can be raised with less CO2 produced per ton of meat" but totalitarian denial of entire food groups by fiat. Do what I say, or else. That's the point, everything else is justification. |
