Yeah, I'm *inland* (draw a 1-hour-per-side triangle with DC, Baltimore...and me, to the west) and I'm sweating this one. It's been NONSTOP rain here for the last week. Everything is saturated. My house is at 1500', but one of my rentals is in a 100 year floodplain. Insured to the hilt, but still...there's a young family living there and I want them to be OK. | ||

I would suggest a courtesy call to that "young family" When my twins came out, I had no time even to have dinner, let alone to be smart in advance of a big storm. | ||

Joe, Maybe offer a parking spot on higher ground. Renters don't do much planning as a whole.(speaking from personal experience) Sometimes that's why they are renters. | ||

No, these folks are good. He's a contractor, she's a home mom. Generator on site, sump pumps checked regularly. My personal house for 17 years so I'm very familiar with it and have passed it on to them; they've been there going on 6 years now. We're as prepared as we can be... | ||

Reach out to friends and neighbors. Help them understand that IF it hits locally, they need to be prepared. IF it hits where you are it most likely will bring flooding and loss of power at least. We have people HERE, where it isn't coming to, buying supplies due to the crap from last year's storm. I was at Harbor Freight this morning and saw four generators sold while I was in line. We have a possibility for some tropical weather next week, maybe. | ||

A couple of deep cycle batteries and a power inverter can come in mighty handy. You can run some lights and a fan or a small TV for quite some time. That is what I did when Harvey came a while back. Ran a fan (it was warm weather) and a light. TV on and off to check on conditions. LED lights run on much lower power consumption rates. | ||

If you are just running lights and a fan, get 12 volt ones so you don't have to run the inverter. I keep thinking about collecting golf cart batteries. I run a propane lantern and heater. | ||

I'm sure the governor of SC is thinking about the (apparently) dramatic population increase near the coast of SC in recent years and he's smartly erring on the side of caution. I lived in Summerville, about 20 miles northeast of Charleston until 1.5 years ago. We evacuated for Hugo, and traffic was very heavy. We evacuated for Floyd and traffic was a Class 5, 4 alarm CF. It took us ~5 hours to go 50 miles. A governor lost his re-election bid over that fiasco. So, now they've set up all the lanes on the major highways to be reversible and the highway department goes through a drill a couple of times every year so they're ready to do it when necessary. All that is very good, but if daily commuting traffic is any indication, I won't be surprised if reversing the lanes still leaves us with a traffic nightmare. Thankfully I now live about 50 miles inland (~due west of Georgetown, SC). A monster hurricane is still something to worry about as far as wind, but I have no worries about flooding. My town is on a big sand hill; we didn't even get any flooding during that 100+ year flood a couple of years ago. Still, I'm keeping a close eye on it. It might give me a good excuse to head over to Suches or up to Little Switzerland for a few days. (Message edited by Hughlysses on September 10, 2018) | ||
