LOL "bag of holding" nerd Nate, Thanks for being the first to notice and say something. Just some weird humor for my kids. |

The aluminum plates are turning into highway peg brackets. They will bolt onto the side cases of the engine. The goal is to provide an alternate position to allow an old man to stretch his knees on an extended ride. They are not for use as a primary foot position. With this in mind, the vibration from the engine should be tolerable for the 5 or 10 minutes of use to relax my knee. I was searching my tools for a jig saw and found out I own a "Bosch GST 85 PBE Professional Corded Jig Saw SDS System Classic Tool 580w". Yalp, I got lucky again. I'll be heading to Menard's for a suitable blade for cutting 1/4 inch aluminum to rough out the brackets. I am not lucky enough to still have access to a water jet. I started researching the jig saw to learn how to change blades when I discovered just what I had. This was in the tools in the garage my mother-n-law had me take home. My deceased father-n-law always bought good tools. I made a mistake when I re-alligned the side box mounts on Lil Red. When removing the brackets to hold the top mounts I removed a pair of rods that triangulated the mounting points. Those rods are needed to keep me from shaking the welds apart on the frames that connect to the side boxes. I broke a bracket loose on the way to the WV Buell Rally. I broke one last year going to GA. I also cracked another weld returning from WV. I'll be cutting a set of rods to weld back into the mounts for the side cases. I have gotten lucky that the brackets were made with a redundant or fourth mounting point. Once the rods are back in place I should be golden. |

A few more cuts and it will be time to round the corners. I put a little wax on the lines before cutting them. Seamed to help. |

Well, that is about it for jig sawing. Time to break out the files. |

If it is too close, I'll snip a piece of aluminum and mount it with the peg bolt on the back side. It may be fine as is. I am painting the brackets black. They should hide down there. Here is the list of bolts and spacers I ordered: 2 screws 1/4"-20 Thread, 1-3/4" Long http://www.mcmaster.com/#90044a124/=y1163s 3 screws 1/4"-20 Thread, 3-3/4" Length http://www.mcmaster.com/#91251a087/=y11642 1 screw 1/4"-20 Thread, 3-1/2" Length http://www.mcmaster.com/#91251a556/=y1164c 3 spacers 1/2" OD, 1-1/2" Length, 1/4" Screw Size http://www.mcmaster.com/#93013a823/=y11adh 3 spacers 1/2" OD, 3/8" Length, 1/4" Screw Size http://www.mcmaster.com/#93013a805/=y11bqp |

Placement is great. Shoe does not touch exhaust. I will have to remember that rain pants could potentially contact the header. Water jet would be the way to go. I think TPEHAK has the program for that. Now I need to repair the side bag mounts so I am ready for the next adventure. May have to replace the $80 dollar Harbor Freight welder. I have been feeding the wire off the spool with my left hand while welding with my right. Really need to just go get oxy-acetylene tanks. That is my hobby. |

If you waterjet them, cut some triangles out of the center of the plates. |

Could you cut a Pegasus pattern or something else fun? Pretty slick, RD- post up a ride report once you've tried them out! The more I look at your bike, the more I want a cherry bomb SS to mutate into a Uly... |

I took a short ride with them today. I'll have to try some highway miles. I disassembled the side bags and mounts today. Re-welded and braced them for the next trip. The more I look at your bike, the more I want a cherry bomb SS to mutate into a Uly...Brad, Just start with an XT and mutate it into a Cherry Beast. |

Start with a Uly and put Cherry Bomb plastics and wheels on it. |

What is the best advice R.D. has to give? Why does R.D. take his trips on an SCG? "The best bike for taking a trip on is the bike you have. It beats not taking a trip on your dream bike because you don't have it." I ride an SCG because that is what I have. I make luggage for it because that is what works for me. The ergonomics are on the tight side for my knees. So, I made brackets for highway pegs for leg stretching. When it needs tires I put tires on it. When it needs oil I change the oil. Lil Red is not my dream bike. It is the bike I have. So, I ride it. It beats not riding. Lil Red is a great commuter if your commutes are 15 to 50 miles. 5 miles or less doesn't heat cycle or recharge the electrical enough. 100 miles plus and earplugs and leg stretching become critical. I used to be one of those freaks that were into controlling my dreams. No, my literal dreams while sleeping. It took years of practice to pull off lucidity during my dreams. I deliberately rode runaway elevators into the ground while watching the bones come up through my body. Or out of the tops of sky scrapers as the floor indicator went past the top floor. I was close to totally controlling my dreams. I didn't wait for the dream I wanted to have. I controlled the dream I was in. I paid a great price for being in control. Prior to going down that road my favorite dreams were nightmares. Especially the ones you wake up from to find you were still stuck in the dream and the nightmare was still on. After gaining control I couldn't have nightmares anymore. Sleeping became boring. So, quit trying to control everything in your life. Get on what you are given and have an adventure. There is a lot I don't say. There are thoughts we don't share because we fear how others will perceive us. Truth is people have more in common than we care to admit. Fears stop us from achieving the greatness that is already inside us. Sometimes you just have to step off the diving board into the abyss eyes open and riding what you have. Ride more this year. |

Ummm... that looks to be a pretty literal statement. There's a dude at my Homie depot here that has a pretty sano Silver Wing, with the top case to boot. Hope that one has a full basket somewhere. |

Guy was going to bob it. Lost interest. Says it ran before they started stripping it. I've been looking for that engine and drive train for a while now. Asking $250 for it. |

Going to "bob" it??!! RD, you GOTTA save that poor bike from a horrible death!! Make it a "Frankentourer". |

Frankentourer! YES. Use an outboard motor tank for fuel and a beanbag chair for a seat! |

Ourdee; did you get the CX? Are the removed parts part of the deal? Says it ran before they started stripping it. I was working as a mechanic in a small independent shop when a guy brought in a Honda 90 and wanted us to get it to run. he said it was running fine last summer, but now it won't start. When I tore into it, it had no intake valve nor were there any rings on the piston. I'm always a bit skeptical when I hear, "It was running fine before..." |

No intake valve at all? Why would a person go through the trouble of taking a thing apart, removing a couple shiny bits and then putting it all back together again? Then lie about it? To a person being paid to fix it? I'm not doubting the truth of the story but why would anyone do any of that? "Ran when parked" is craigslist for "Walk away quickly" Also, "I know what I got" is craigslist for "What do I have?" |

I am very skeptical when buying someones pile. It doesn't have a kick starter. He doesn't know I will bring a jump pack. I need to know how long it has set. Wonder if he has a seat, tank, signals, fender, or headlight for it. I don't know what will transpire this evening. I really need to get the 66 Honda 160 out of my shed and get it started. I know it was running when parked 30 years ago. |
