I grew up in NW Pa. Chili always has beans in it. First time I had chili without beans was at a restaurant in Fla. Thought I got ripped off! | ||

White bean chicken chili...  We usually see our tomato garden yield better than this year, we'd be putting back jars and jars of pasta sauce, salsa, chili starter, chow chow and such by now. Chili WITH BEANS, 5 or more is great, with jalapeno cheddar cornbread. NOMNOMNOM | ||

MY Chili has 4 kinds of beans. 4x beans - kidney, pinto, black and navy 4x meats - beef sirloin, venison tenderloin, bacon, + 1 seasonal game meat whatever my hunting friends have 4x peppers - Anaheim chilis, serrano peppers, jalapenos, green bell Onions Garlic Tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, some paste. Secret chili spices (pretty standard, the secret part is the proportions I use) I'm told it's not chili by Texan purists or whatever... I say it's all chili. I like all kinds. Isn't the Cincinnati stuff served over spaghetti or something along those lines? | ||

Preparations On Thursday morning, I’m heading over to US Rt. 50 East and going to the West Virginia Buell Rally. Google says that it’s 230 miles and it’ll take me 4 hours and 30 minutes. That means closer to 6 hours in reality. I’m really looking forward to it. Today, I packed my sleeping bag and pillow into the stuff sack, deflated and rolled up the sleeping pad and put those with the tent. I got out my coffee making kit and made sure I have enough Folgers instant and that there’s enough gas for the stove. I also charged up the battery for my flashlight. I’ll pack clothes tomorrow. I topped up the oil in the Roadster and also topped up the air in the tires. Both were a little low; not enough to be dangerous, but a couple of PSI below what I usually run. I was thinking about taking the bike to the quarter car wash, then hitting it with a coat of wax, but if I do that, it’s almost guaranteed to rain. There’s a 50% chance of showers as it is; a spit shined bike will raise that percentage to a near certainty. The rally should be a really good time. I plotted a ride to Hillbilly Hot Dogs for Friday. It something like 140 miles and 3 - ¼ hours each way and it’s mostly on back roads. It should be fun. It’s funny; I’m the guy who doesn’t like group rides, so I plan one for the rally and I think I'll enjoy doing it. Sometimes I wonder about myself. Trying to describe the rally makes it sound pretty lame; but it’s a great time and I really enjoy going. I guess it’s about the people. Nearly everyone who’s going to be there is someone I’d consider a friend and I enjoy spending time with them. And there are memories from past rallies; Froggy getting drunk; Jim and his wedding suit, The smoker and the amazingly wonderful pulled pork it produced, Jack & Judy Gainer and their hospitality, the ride to the Asylum and ten people trying to fix Ishai’s muffler, Brad exploding metal beer bottles in the fire and, of course, Fire Pit Jenga. This year, the call of the rally is loud and strong. I’m glad I’m heeding it. | ||

I have been trying to pare down my kit. I wanted to pack in just a top case. I have all but gave up on that. With rain in the forecast I have decided I will need a two person tent instead of the solo tent. May need book reading space. And extra towels. I am still trying to go light. The more events I attend the more stuff I find doesn't get used. | ||

If you take an old porcelain coffee pot, get the water boiling and add a half to full cup of grounds. Let it slow boil for a half hour or so. Pull it off the fire for a couple minutes and then add a half cup of ice water. The ice water makes the grounds fall to the bottom and if you pour slowly you get a few cups of beautiful coffee. From West Virginny I’m taking a laid back day. Most everybody else has gone on a ride to Moundsville to ride the local roads and end up at a Paranormal museum. I need to hang out and let my leg stop hurting. I’ve pulled a muscle or a tendon or something in my right leg. I’m not sure just what the problem is, but sometimes I can barely walk, it hurts so bad. Other times, my leg feels almost normal. Today, it hurts, so I’m keeping a low profile. Later on, I’ll ride into town and buy some Gatorade for tonight and gas up the Roadster. Then I’ll shower and put on clean clothes for tonight’s dinner. I stalled when leaving Cheviot on Thursday morning. It was pouring and I was waiting for the rain to ease up a bit before heading out. It really didn’t matter; the rain was moving west to east and I had to ride through it anyhow. I didn’t ride through the rain until I was well into eastern Ohio. Then, when I was crossing the Ohio River into West Virginia, the clouds broke and the sun came out. Ten miles later, I was pulled over onto a side road and removing my rain gear. My nice new rain gear that I got on sale that leaked everywhere I don’t want rain gear to leak. It was made by Joe Rocket, just in case you’re curious. Once I had the rain gear off, I started drying out pretty quickly and I made it into the Cokeley Campground. I am quite happy to say that the weather forecasters showed their usual degree of accuracy. They had been predicting rain for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but Thursday night was starry and we only got a couple of short lived showers both yesterday and so far today. There’s a bigger than expected crowd here for the rally. Mostly old timers, but a number of first timers, as well. Everybody seems to be having a good time. Yesterday, I led a group of 15 bikes or so on a backroad ride to Hillbilly Hot Dogs. Even though I wasn’t familiar with the roads, it would be hard to find a road here that isn’t a motorcyclists dream. We got a late start and it took longer to get to Hillbilly’s, so we opted for the shorter and faster route home. It was interesting for me, as I had a variety of skill levels in the group. The ride was too slow for some, and was pushing the upper comfort level for others. My priority was to keep the group reasonably close together and I was successful in doing that. I think everybody enjoyed the ride. After we finished eating, the group kind of split up a bit and we all made our way back to the Campground. Last night, we all sat around watching the fire and swapping Reading through this just proves to me how inadequate it sounds compared to experiencing it, but I don’t regret my decision to be here. I’m having a magnificent time with a lot of friends. I took a few pictures, but I won’t be able to post them until I get home. The Hot Spot would be overwhelmed, or somethin’. Holy Bat Crap Batman, it's Jim Duncan! I have to say, I do not envy Crusty leading that ride. He did a masterful job of keeping the group together though. I tried to lead the group on a different route on the return trip and we got split up. Maybe I should set down with Crusty and get some pointers. | ||

Hmmm… I don’t enjoy riding in a group anymore; yet I plotted out a route from the Campground to Hillbilly Hot Dogs, then led the ride. It wasn’t easy keeping the group from getting separated, but I managed and almost everybody got the same level of dissatisfaction from it. I think that the next time I plot a route, it will be for a self-guided ride. That way, the people who want to go fast can, and the people who want to go slow and enjoy the scenery will also be able to. And the people like me, who prefer to ride alone at their own pace will also be able to enjoy it. I just went to the barber to get my hair cut. I don’t know why, but he cut my hair almost to a crew cut. It’s way too short and I don’t like the way it looks. I guess it’s time to find another barber. Grumble. When I got home from the rally on Sunday, I was bringing my camping gear up from the garage when something behind my knee went pop and I got a severe sharp pain in my leg. I dropped the stuff I was holding and almost fell down the stairs. I couldn’t walk normally. If I kept to the ball of my right foot, I was able to hobble around the house, but that was about it. However, the leg has improved considerably over the past couple of days, and today, it’s almost back to normal. That’s a good thing, because the soonest I could get an appointment with an Orthopedic Doctor is September 5. Yesterday, I went grocery shopping with my brother. I had to use one of those motorized carts in the store. I found that to be embarrassing. Still, it was good to get out of the house. And I enjoy going to Jungle Jim’s. We stopped at the Harley shop near the store and I bought 3 quarts of Syn 3 and a quart of Formula +. They don’t give that sh*t away; it cost me over 51 bucks. Well; the Roadster deserves it. I had plans of doing a bit of work on the Roadster this week. She’s filthy with road phlegm from riding in the rain and needs a really good cleaning. Also, I was going to change the tires. The old set are finally worn down to the point of needing to be changed. I also need to do an oil change and I need to install the new jiffy stand bushings. It’s not a lot of work, but I think I’ll give it another day or two before I start. I’ll probably spread the work out over several days. That’s one of the benefits of being retired; I can work to my own schedule. Why doesn’t MADD get on the anti-texting wagon? They were hell on drunk drivers, yet distracted drivers are killing just as many people as alcohol was. I wonder if it’s because the higher ups do a bit of texting while they’re driving. After all; they’re good enough drivers that it’s not a problem for them. Maybe when one of their kids gets killed by a distracted driver they’ll wake the F**k up. Enough bitching and whining. I’m listening to the Peer Gynt Suite and Rossini’s William Tell Overture. Truly Great music; but I still see the Lone Ranger when I hear it. | ||

Rear tire is mounted, balanced and the wheel is back on the bike. My leg isn't bothering me. After I finish this Gatorade, I'll go back down to the garage and start on the front wheel. | ||

O.T.W. I’m sitting here eating a Lean Cuisine frozen lunch and I’m wondering if the factory workers at Lean Cuisine get free lunches as a fringe benefit. Some of the meals are pretty tasty; some really suck, though. If they do get free meals, do they get to choose which meal? I think I’m getting old. It took me all afternoon yesterday to change the tires on the Roadster. I used to love doing tire changes when I worked in a shop because I always beat the flat rate. Now, I wouldn’t be able to make minimum wage. However, I know my tires are on right and properly balanced. I may have slowed down, but I’m still pretty freakin’ conscientious. Harbor Freight only sells products made from the finest Chinesium, but sometimes a cheap inferior product is better than no product at all. I would dearly love to have a Handy lift, but I’m poor, so I settled for the Harbor Freight jack/lift that only lists for $79.99. A very good friend had sent me a gift card to HF, and Continental tires sent me a $50.00 rebate card. When combined with the 20% off coupon and the free tape measure coupon and the 4 in 1 screwdriver coupon, plus I bought a mechanic’s rolling seat, that hundred bucks went a long way. The seat and jack helped me considerably with the tire change. My leg didn’t bother me a bit during the tire change, and it still feels OK. I guess I’ve recovered from whatever was wrong with it. My back is pretty stiff, but that’s not unusual. I’m pretty much out of shape. (yeah, I know; round is a shape) I used to be a miner and I was proud of my drilling abilities with a Jackleg drill. If I tried to drill for an 8 hour shift now, I’d probably wind up hospitalized. Why do the engineers at Hardley – Ableson make wheel removal and reassembly so difficult? Before I got the Roadster, I was riding a Moto Guzzi Norge. I could do a relaxed tire change on the rear wheel in less than an hour. With the Roadster, I have to have some way to get the bike up, then I have to wrestle with the brake caliper and spacers and rear axle, and remove the belt guard and the rear exhaust pipe. Maybe they’re thinking that it would be a nice income generator to the Service Departments of the dealerships. I’m too My bike is not butt jewelry, nor is it a toy. It’s my transportation and it’s in my blood. I take as good care of it as I can afford. If I can save some money on tires, then I can use that money for things like oil or gas or campground fees. I once had to buy a tire while on the road. The price of that one tire would have bought me two tires at home and left enough to travel over a State or two for a lunch ride. And speaking of a State or two away, the Labor Day weekend Springfield Mile is next week. I bought my tickets last December. I’ll be sitting in Section NN Row 1 Seat 1 on Sunday watching some of the most skillful riders in the World racing on the World’s fastest and best Mile and eating Rib Eye Sandwiches from Coleman’s. That will be a great way to close out the summer. |
