Remember when tire valve caps that were also valve core pullers were common? I've been trying to find them for a while now and I finally have had a bit of success. I have about 35 or 40 pairs left, so when you see me, say something and I'll give you a pair for the asking.

I saw those for sale at AutoZone recently. Good thing to have handy. More than once I discovered my "slow leak" wasn't a puncture in the tire, but a loose valve stem. |

I was a horrible kid. Kept those on my bicycle tires. When adults ticked me off, I'd loosen their valves. Got chased with a hammer once when I got caught in the act. |

I had some guy pull a dick move and take a parking place I was half into . . . I waved a cordial wave . . . went to the next block and as I walked past . . .just took my Kleins (never mess with a Lineman, they always have Kleins in their pocket) and cut the curb side valve stems without missing a step. I've fixed more than one leak by tightening a valve . . . . . |

I have a set of those that have passed from my first bike to the next for over 20 years. Man, they are handy. Never thought about them not being available any longer. |

Matthew; you've got Mail. The caps with the rubber covers were the ones I was searching for. I've got to say that they're expensive, though. I think they wound up costing me about two bits per cap. Or was that two bits per pair? Now, I'm confused; I'd better go sit down and think about it. Or somethin'. |

Two bits is $.25 if my old-timey math serves me. I don't see any mail from you John...? |

BMW used to put those on it's bikes. My 85 K100RS had them. I wanted to keep them but when I sold my BMW it went to a friend so I didn't keep them. I later went to BMW but the new dealership was full of youngins that didn't have a clue. I finally found an older gent who went out to an older bike and removed one from it and gave it to me. He said he'd order a new one to replace it. Now I swap it back and forth among my two bikes when traveling. Then a small package arrived and all my swapping has become unnecessary! It's amazing how this forum thing works!

I've never seen these before in my life, but now I have a pair. The question is now where to install them. |

The question is now where to install them. They fit really well on tire valve stems. If you need more, just let me know. |

I pride myself with being knowledgeable about many things - even being aware of things from 'before my time'. However I never knew such things existed. Thanks for making me more educated! |

I wasn't really that surprised when Froggy said he'd never seen these caps before; he's young enough to be my grandson. But your post caught me flat footed. They were really common when I was a kid, and I think every kid I knew had them on their bicycle. They weren't even a "Cool" thing to have, they were just normal. Anyway, I'll put a set in the mail for you today, if it stops raining. |

Just had a chance to check my mail today and found the envelope. Thanks, Crusty! The reason it took so long? Last week (EXACTLY one week ago) I was on my way home from dinner with friends on my Zero. I was one block from home passing a gas station when some IDIOT in an Audi going the other direction apparently looked right THROUGH me, saw an open gas pump, and dove into the driveway and directly into my left leg. The result? Broken tibia. The nature of the break required the installation of a couple of steel plates and screws to reinforce and stabilize the bone while it heals. My leg took the brunt of the impact, the bike APPEARS to have only cosmetic damage but I won't know for sure until the insurance adjuster gets to look it over. Doesn't matter as I am off my feet for a MINIMUM of six weeks. I can't WAIT for 2018 to be over already. |

Damn Jaime that sucks large! Sorry to here that. Having been laid up for three months with a shattered heal I feel your pain and frustration! Hope you heal quickly and if there's physical therapy involved do it! At our age you'll stiffen up and never walk right again if you don't. |
