Our Max (the white one) went to be with Sam (the black one) yesterday. He was almost 12 years old, Great Pyrenees.

He collapsed in the back yard on Saturday, had to carry all 120 pounds of him up the hill wrapped in a blanket, got him comfy in the house and called the kids to come see him Sunday morning before we took the last ride to the vet.

He was a good boy, and he's with his best buddy now.

Sorry to hear of your sad loss. Dogs have such a presence in our lives that the hole they leave behind can't really be refilled.

Sad to hear of this, Matthew. It's part of the deal we make when we adopt them into our lives. We've been re-doing the landscaping around where we've buried two of our late dogs, right next to our seating area under two dogwood trees. I've taken a picture of it, getting ready to send it to you.

Funny story: In the middle of the picture, there's a fake, cast plaster/concrete dog that my aunt in Florida gave me. When we last went to visit her, she had that dog laying in her carport on the approach to her door. We had both our dogs with us, visiting for the first time- as we walked up on the "dog", it spooked my Basenji so bad, he froze, hackles UP... took him about a minute to realize it wasn't real! We laughed so hard...

Again, my condolences, friend.

Here's a thought, FWIW- once you and your family get through the grieving time, focus on your best candidates for a new adoption... IIRC you still have that gorgeous "calico" Australian shepherd, and dawgies are pack animals. I firmly believe one should have at least 2 dogs to do it right. Lord knows there are too many homeless animals, it'd do a soul good to bring one home if you can.

Some time ago, after we tragically and unexpectedly lost one of the best dogs EVAAAR, our beloved "Chloe", we adopted "Rocky", a Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix... he's now the most devoted, BESTEST guard dog and Momma's boy on the planet. Barks at EVERYONE who visits us, including my sweetie's brother, and waits to attack you as you're LEAVING. Truly a "mental" case, no doubt, honestly IS brain-damaged, but he's priceless nonetheless.

Prayers and good mojo for you and Max, good buddy.

Thanks for posting that, Big Rider. I've got one of those in my desk from when we lost Chloe... yours may be slightly better written than mine.

Makes you think though... heck, all the critters I've had in my life would just cover me up once I got across! ; )

Addi is starting to realize that he's gone... this morning she noticed that his food and water bowls were not there and she had a strange look in her eye... we'll see how she's doing when I get home today.

I've had to step out of the room a couple of times, trying to hold it together.

Thanks, everyone for your kind words... I'm having a really tough time with this.

I've had two pyrs over twenty one years (1st one made it to 8 second one to 13). We have a rescue boxer/beagle type mix breed now, and she seems to have acclimated to us just fine, but those pyrs...
Stubborn as rocks, difficult to train, & full of wanderlust if the gates open. They barked at anything that moves outside the fence, and wore a path barking at the back fence line. Trash hounds the minute you left the room. More than once I found them both with the trash can lid over their heads. One as a pup ate half my living room. Pyrenees are for people "all in with dog ownership"no one wants to watch them when you leave town for vacation. One trip, I spent more on kennel fees than I did for campground sites.
Drooling lazy barking shedding lumps both of them.

And I still miss them both.

I have the last of two that is getting very close to the same point, every day I wonder how much longer does she have.

Always sad when one of our friends goes.

"More than once I found them both with the trash can lid over their heads."

LOL!!!

Basenjis are weird dogs. They're known to go for used tissue, Q-tips, and such, which usually is in the bathroom trashcan. I'd come home every now and then and my first Basenji, Loki, would be wearing the trashcan lid like a collar, or one of those cones... somewhere I have a picture. He must've worn that thing for hours until I got home.

If you put any credit towards Buddhism, I hope to do right by my dogs well enough to become one of them, with a good "owner". Looking at Rocky, under the desk where it's cool, on the wood floor, just snoozing and looking after me.

Matthew- part of the pain is just coming home from work. Addi also knows. Grief isn't something to run from or avoid, it's completely natural.

We humans know about two things only- death and taxes. Life is a beeatch, but it's good, even with the bad.

I feel your pain. I had to put down Rocky, my 17 yo companion a while back and a few months ago Freckles, my 15 yo companion. It's tough. Those two dogs were all I had. Coming home to silence was shattering.

I didn't think I would get another dog but I stumbled across Trampus on CL and went to look at him. He was a rescue dog and he is a handful but it's nice to have a dog again. He's no Rocky or Freckles but he's a goofy little entertainer. We have bonded pretty good. I just hope he out lives me because I don't want to have to go through that again.

Sorry for your loss Matthew.

I rescued my neighbor's dog today, it escaped, AGAIN.

Called the guy and explained that (a) dog escaped (b) I managed to reclaim said dog. Put it back in its enclosure.

With the help of a nice girl in the park next to my house who was wearing a lifeguard T-shirt. Spent a good half hour or more of my time trying to save this dog's life, as it lives on a busy street. Very sweet boy, didn't know me, but I handled him well.

No face to face thank you from the renters, or nuthin. FCCcktards.

Please pardon my aggravation, I just hate that stupid people decide they can handle/own/care for animals.

I'm going to bed before I get existential

NOT SAFE FOR KIDS>>> SWEAR WORDS

http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic= 1661

A buddy has had 3 Great Pyrenees pass in the last couple of years. Sympathy for your loss.

You can teach a Pyrenees anything, except not to bark.

He lives next to a park, lots of wild life.
I was visiting one evening, and a coyote howled in the near distance. The guy 4 houses down has a small pack of German Shepherd Dogs. They proceed to go ape. The doggy version of "we'll kick your butt! Better Stay Away!!!"

His Pyrenees, OTOH, made the joyous barking that says "Come play! Come Play!" with a near silent undertone of "So we can eat you".

My sister also lost her dog this year, a full sized poodle, ( who they had to stop taking to the dog park because he beat up pit bulls ) pretty much their kid.

The only question is if you go get another dog right away, or in a while.

Bless you.
