Can of worms open....

Your first pistol? I'll assume protection and fun.

Get a Glock. Not fancy, not expensive, not finicky. Theres a reason they're so popular, but you won't impress your friends with it.
You can choose any variety of size, and caliber easily. The G19 is probably the most popular as a full size 9mm.

Nothing wrong with the vast majority of pistols today, but get a name brand ONLY. No cheap stuff.

M&P is a solid choice.
I’ve had mine for a few years and still love it.

9mm is a great caliber for effective ballistics, flatter trajectory, recoil, and low cost for practice ammo.

After trying a few holsters I’ve settled with a leather desantis thumb snap OWB for comfort and retention reasons.

Yah, can of worms. ; )
my reasons for transferring 2 glocks I had are that the grip angle is different than every other pistol and that the grip is shaped like a brick, but my hand isn’t. Not sure about the plastic ‘iron’ sights either, but metal ones can be bought for less than $100 and are easy to upgrade.

Despite my reasons they ARE very popular. If I were to get a glock again, I’d build a P80 frame and put 3-dot ‘metal-type’ iron sights on it. 33rd mags are fun

If you have any buddies who shoot, I’d suggest trying out a few of thier pistols to see what you like/dislike. Gun shows are also nice to be able to handle a wide selection of pistols side by side. A large FFL with a good selection might also help you make an educated decision.

Either way, Don’t let them make a few assumptions tell you right off the bat what gun you need. It’s not a pair of shoes that you can just return if you keep the receipt and the box. ; )

He lives in Canada so I think he can't do the 80% thing.

Personally, my worm from the can of first pistol is .22 Ruger MK

I have an old MK1 and really love it.
It's heavy so low recoil and accurate.

This is purely a range toy though.

The S&W M&P are fine pistols. If it feels good in your hand, and the levers can be easily worked, you can't really go wrong with that choice.

I would only look at Glock if your natural point of aim with a M&P, or most other pistols, has you pointing the muzzle way low. There are other options, similar to Glock that don't have their unusual point of aim. IMO, the Glocks unusual point of aim is the only reason I would point someone in that direction... If that point of aim suited them.

Nillace has the best suggestion. Go to a firing range and try out as many as you can.

Gun guys have very strong opinions that you are wrong no matter what you do, haha.

Any modern pistol will be fine, as long as it's not cheap.

Find a range that rents guns. Spend some time with several models, and you'll be able to make a more informed decision.

There's a range near me that rents by the hour. You don't rent A gun, you rent ALL their guns, one at a time. Just bring the current one back, and they'll give you a different one. Only caveat is that you have to use their ammo, not the stuff you brought with you. You may be able to find a range close to you with the same sort of deal. Makes it easy to try several guns at the range on the cheap.

Mhpalin,
Knowing nothing about your firearms experience other than you're looking for a pistol.

I suggest looking at a .22 caliber to start out.

One of my friends is a police officer. We were talking guns one night and he'd never heard of a H&K P7. I showed him mine and his comment was that it was really heavy! In today's standards he would be correct. He then showed me his duty weapon which was the S&W M&P 40. The grips were very nice and it was very light in comparison to the P7. Needing a weapon that you can carry all day yet powerful enough to protect yourself it was definitely a good call. To shoot it at the range might get a little old after a while.
So if you are buying this as a range gun you might consider something a little heavier that properly fits your hand. Your hand will appreciate the extra weight when having fun at the range. A larger heavier weapon would be your best choice for accuracy and ease of shooting.

If you're buying this for defense/carry, find one that you can carry and or conceal easily. A large, high capacity hand gun is useless if you do not have it with you. If you're just buying a range gun, the sky is the limit.

I'll throw the CZ P-07 Duty into the list of suggestions. I traded my Glock 19 for one. The single/double action is great, letting you use single for accuracy and double for safety and ready carry. I'm a 1911 guy and the ergonomics of the CZ are more familiar and comfortable than the Glock or M&P.

+1 to finding shop/range that will let you rent guns to try out.
I did that with my ex when she was shopping for her first gun.

M&P gets my vote.

Researching is good, listening to others opinions is ok, but you need to hold a bunch of pistols and see what geometry and ergonomics suit you.

Glocks are fine, everyone swears by them, but I hate their ergonomics and geometry, so I will never own one.

Honestly, for a range gun a .22 is fantastic. I've got a Ruger 22/45 that shoots great, and .22 ammo is about the cheapest you can find. It kills paper just as well as any other gun I own.

My take on this...

A pistol is no different than a knife in that both items are as personal as your bike. Both weapons are weapons of either last resort or only resort. If you are studious about your bike, you must do the same for your first pistol. Or any pistol, for that matter.

My first and still only pistol is the Steyr M40 compact. The trapezoidal sight system put off some people but it works fine for me. I took almost no time adjusting to it.

Before the Steyr, I shot friends' Glocks, SWs, and even a few Kimbers, of various calibers. All excellent brands. The Steyr just felt more comfortable in my hands as I do shoot with my weak left hand. The Steyr is more secured after recoils and made it easier to reacquire the target. For some of my friends, the Steyr feels small in their larger hands and made their shooting more difficult.

So the bottom line is that you should handle and shoot the pistol that attracts you as much as possible. I hope to never use my Steyr outside of the range, but with over 2k rounds so far, I am confident enough not to fumble it if needed.

Yrs ago when I visited my mother in LV, at the lowest point of the economic recession and squatters were in the empty houses, there was a disturbance in the street that I had to send my mother and aunt into the back and I drawn my Steyr. The guy was high or drunk or both, and he was waving a pistol and swearing at a house across the street from us. At times like this, you cannot afford to be uncertain of how your weapon feels to you.

If you have a gun range that lets you test firearms, I'd highly recommend doing that. We have an indoor range that lets us shoot an unlimited number of firearms (you pay for the ammo) for a set price. Good to get them in your hands because all guns feel different.

Echoing some of the others - try as many as you can get your hands on. Just doing some "googling" I see a gun shop/indoor range. I'd bet they'd let you try a few if you were serious. I can't recommend them but find yourself a gun range and shop. They usually let you try guns dang near for free if you buy their bullets.

http://phoenixrange.ca/

The Smith M&P or SD9 are very similar to the Glock 19. Smith was sued by Glock and they pay royalties and an undisclosed sum. Smith are a little better for smaller hands than the Glock. The SD9 is Sunny's choice over the Glock because of how it fit her hand when shooting.

YMMV - try all you can.

Than the Glock 43?

I'm not a fan-boy, but they make more than the G19...

I have an M&P 9 and love it.
Also have the M&P Bodyguard .380 and am OK but don't love it.
It's full time double action and a very heavy trigger.
The 9 is almost as crisp as my Interarms 1911A1.

Good pistols.

For paper punching I like the High Standard Citation.

Canik TP9 is a good one for the money.

CZ P10C is another.

Glock is a good, simple gun, though they're a little overpriced, IMO.

Walther PPQ is another.

A Colt 1911 is my favorite pistol in the world, followed by a Beretta 92, HK VP9, CZ 40P, and a Polymer80 Glock. My Springfield RO Compact 1911 has honorable mention.

Oh I forgot to mention the Citadel 9mm 1911.
I bought one for a steal when they first came out and I've been highly impressed with the quality and reliability of it. The damn thing just works, every time. Which for budget 1911 is really saying something.
They're made by the same people that make the Rock Island 1911s. The prices have gone up on them but I think you can still get one for under $500.

This is the internet. if you went to a general motorcycle forum and asked what would be a good first bike, you'd get answers ranging from a 50cc step through to a Gold Wing.

If you ask about first pistols, you're going to get answers from the one you like to every possible alternative and every possible modification to make it a better gun.

Me; I think you ought to get a Blunderbuss. it's a time proven design and stone simple to maintain. Plus, guns were true works of art a few short centuries ago. Check out this fine example:

You can likely carry that in Canada.

Hi everyone looking at buying a 9mm been looking at a S&W M&P 9 range kit, seems to be a good buy.

Several years ago the dude behind the counter at my LGS plopped an S&W M&P9 range kit up on the counter and said you need this.

I've since added an M&P9 Compact and M&P9 Shield (which is my typical EDC).

The vids below are at the range with the M&P9 full size (the original "range kit" pistol), stock out of the box. The circle in the second video is overall 3" in diameter, and the target is at 7 yards (21 feet):

What do you guys think of this pistol as a first one?

Top-flight brand name, priced right, three backstraps to choose from, goes boom every time, and pretty accurate in stock form. Plus, there's a lot of aftermarket support. What's not to like?

The best advice on this thread? Try as many pistols as you can before you purchase. Happy hunting!

Best,
