55º @ 7:00 AM

It’s warm! It’s supposed to hit 60º F (15.5º C) today. It’s going to be cloudy with a pretty good chance of showers, but it’s warm! I’ll probably take the lights down this morning; but I could ride someplace this afternoon. It would be nice to let the bike get up to temperature again. The short hops in cold weather that I’ve been doing are what’s known as Severe Duty, and the poor Roadster has put up with it without complaint. I wonder if Rudy’s BBQ in Springfield (OH) is still open? That might be a good destination.

Yesterday was even warmer, but I was pretty much Under the Weather. I had a Colonoscopy and that killed any ideas about going out on the bike. Not only was I feeling the effects of the anesthesia, but the Prep continued to affect my digestive tract until I went to bed last night. I really dislike having a Colonoscopy. The prep is very uncomfortable. At one point, I was sitting on the toilet for so long that my leg fell asleep and I had a real problem standing up when I was finally able to rise. The good news is that I don’t have to have another for a few years. The procedure itself isn’t that bad; they knocked me out and I never felt a thing. I guess I should compliment the staff at the Tri-State Endoscopy Center. The nurses were all intelligent and empathetic (and very attractive). The Anesthetic Nurse was a real knockout blonde (I wish I had thought of that line before she hit me with whatever drug she gave me).

David was my ride, and after I was released, we went to an IHOP for brunch. It was well after noon by the time we got out of the Center. Once home, I alternated between taking short naps and hitting the bathroom. (Did I mention that I hate the Prep?) I saw that the sun had broken through the cloud cover and the temp was up into the 60s, but I had no desire whatsoever to get on the bike.

Today, I feel a whole lot better. I started a load of laundry as soon as I got up, and when I finish this Snippet, I’ll head outside and take down the Christmas lights. Then, I’ll go for a ride. The weather’s supposed to turn ugly after today; they’re talking about a major snow storm for tomorrow or Saturday and high temps in the Teens and 20s for the next week. If I don’t get a ride in today, I don’t know when the next opportunity will be.

Better get my sore ass in gear.

Mine was early this morning. I've already downed a cheese burger with onions and a cup of grape juice with 2 teaspoons of Bragg's vinegar in it. I too am eye balling taking down the lights today. I got the blowmen and the tree already.

I started a new job this week. I wanted to be a wrecker truck driver when I was younger. Managed to find a boss willing to train me. I like it so far. I may learn hard tomorrow and Saturday.

Look at it this way Crusty, for a little while you had proof that you're not full of it!

We had a great day yesterday with 60 degrees. We brewed a nice ESB while sipping a previously made Scottish Heavy. We should have enough beer to survive the rest of the Winter!

It's warm here now but turns to crap tonight. No doubt tomorrow for you. Enjoy your day!

I loved the "cleansed" feeling before my colonoscopy (but not how I got there) and was a little nervous laying in the bed waiting for the procedure. I was even more surprised when they gave me something to put me out during the wHole event (the SO was completely awake for hers).

What pissed me off was when they woke me up during the procedure to show me how good it was going....

Really? You woke me up to show me a portion of the procedure? WTF?!?

I made it a mission to find a new Proc Doc.

From what I recall from my last round the doc said he would wake me to help turn or move When he got to a certain point.

Maybe that would have been why they risk waking a sleeping bear?!?

I posted this over in the Racing Forum, but I think that if I also post it here, then maybe it might pique someone's interest and maybe they'll go see one of these races and discover just how good they are.

Waiting For Daytona

It's the middle of January. At present, the temp is 12º F and we got another dusting of snow last night. I'm not doing a whole lot of riding.

But I've bought tickets for six races. The Daytona TT, Atlanta Short Track, both Springfield Miles and the TT and Short Track races that go with them. I know that there's a lot of work going on and that there will be a lot of changes to bikes and teams by the time March rolls around. I've got lots of questions, but information is kind of sketchy.

There have been a couple of things I've heard; Shayna Texter won't be riding for RMR. I don't know who she will be riding for. Her Brother Cory had a disappointing year and is going to be campaigning on a single this year. Jake Johnson has left the Harley Factory team and will be riding for Estension Racing.

However, that makes me wonder; who's going to take Johnson's place on the H-D team? And where is Sammy Halbert going? He was the only non Indian rider to give that team fits consistently throughout the season. Yes, Bauman won at Lima and the TT in Sturgis, but Halbert won the X Games 1/2 Mile and was there at the front all season long. I wonder if the H-D team grabbed him to replace Johnson?

Henry Wiles showed that he's still the master of Peoria and was leading the Buffalo Chip TT by a bunch when he had that hard landing after the jump and ripped his engine open. The one time I was able to see the Lima 1/2 Mile was back in 2008, and he led the entire race on an Aprilia until turn 4 of the last lap when Joe Kopp just managed to get by him and win the race.

Jeffrey Carver showed that the XR 750 isn't as obsolete as many people think at the 1/2 Mile in Ft. Worth, Texas. He also was in the hunt at the season finale in Perris, CA and finished second.

I also wonder if Vance & Hines will get the XG 750R sorted out? I've heard claims that the engine is making enough power, but I'm not sure I believe that. I think it's more complex than just horsepower, but horsepower wins the Miles. The Harleys seemed to be mid pack finishers for most of the season. I'd dearly love to see them up front fighting with the Indians.

And what's happened to the Kawasakis? They were the Wave of the Future until the Indians came along. Smith was almost untouchable on a Mile on his. Now, it's all about the Indians. I wonder if somebody out there will be able to build a Kaw that can compete with the front runners?

AFT announced that there's almost 2 Million Dollars available in Contingencies. It's nice to see some money coming into Flat Track after years of being the Forgotten Race Series. Still, I wonder what the purse is at a typical National? The AMA used to have that info readily available, but now, I have no idea where to find out. I'm sure these riders are underpaid, but things are looking a lot better than they have been in a long time.

Anyhow, those are just some of the things that are running through my head on this cold, snowy Mid-January morning.

Maybe a ride is in order...

Semi Coherent Babblings

I’m a Morning person. I enjoy watching the sun rise and I’m most active before noon. Usually, when I decide to do something in the morning, I carry it through the day. Yesterday, though, I didn’t.

About mid morning, I decided I’d just hole up for the day. I wasn’t going out at all. I was going to maybe watch an old movie or read a book, but the outside world wasn’t going to see me. That attitude changed just after noon. I knew it was warm; nearly all the snow had melted and the gray skies weren’t shedding rain yet. I put on my gear and fired up the Roadster. I decided to take a ride over to the general store in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. I took the Anderson Ferry across the Ohio River and noticed the water level was up. The water was pretty muddy looking and there was a lot of debris floating downstream with the current. Lots of logs and other natural items along with plastic bottles, bits of styrofoam and even a glass bottle with a cap on it. I don’t know why, but I really enjoy taking ferries when I’m on my bike. I once changed my route and destination spontaneously so that I could take a ferry across Lake Champlain

Once across the river, I set out on backroads. I get a real kick out of the name Bullittsville, KY. It tickles me the same way the name Rabbit Hash does. I always feel that there should be a banjo playing in the background and there should be an abundance of excessively jacked up 4x4s and muscle cars from the late 60s and early 70s. The roads are a motorcyclist’s dream however, very twisty with light traffic and beautiful scenery. The roads were wet and many of the turns had gravel on them, so I kept my speed down to “Little Old Lady” levels. I still enjoyed the ride. It was the longest ride I’ve taken in months.

After a while, I rode by the General Store. The place was jammed with cars and I had a very hard time finding a place to park the bike. I finally squeezed in between a parked car and a tree then went over to the outhouse. My bladder was urgently calling for my attention, otherwise I wouldn’t have stopped. The outhouse is a Four Holer. Two for Does and two for Bucks. Rabbit Hash is right on the river, and I could see a large Paddle Wheeler moored over on the opposite bank.

One disappointment was that I didn’t see a single other bike on the ride. There were none in Rabbit Hash and I thought I’s see at least a couple of other crazy Diehards, but if they were out riding, they weren’t in Rabbit Hash.

Once I finished my business, I got back on the Roadster and retraced my path home, hitting the quarter car wash before I got to the house. The poor bike was covered with sand, salt and other Road Phlegm and it hurt me to see that.

I needed that ride. I was falling into a pit of morose lethargy before I went out. Being on the bike, even for just one tank of gas broke me out of that hole and recharged my spirits.

Once the weather gets warmer, I think that I’ll take that “Porno Ride” and go beyond Rabbit Hash to Big Bone Lick State Park which just happens to be on Beaver Road. Those names may tickle my gutter level humor, but I bet the roads are superb. I don’t think there are any boring roads near the River.

If a ride in mid 50 degree temps can be so uplifting, I can just anticipate how good it’s going to feel once the temps hit the ‘70s. Spring is Coming!

You're inspiring me Crusty! We had a big storm come through last night with a lot of rain so the salted streets should be washed off. It's now 61 degrees outside and after reading your post I'm heading out to put air in the tires of the Buell. It's a little windy but I don't mind, it's been quite a while since I've been on 2 wheels.

Made a day trip to Omaha and back Saturday.

Bought a bunch of heads from Dan, met him in Bellevue, NE at 3pm.
Made it home just as the 33 degree drizzle changed to 31 degree snow.

Really starting to love this Buick Ranier, 1250 miles in 17 hours. Didn't doze off once.

Due to the underwhelming demand for pictures of my repainted living room, I broke out the point&shoot and took a couple of photos using my usual masterly Photographic skills. So, out of two pictures that I took, one is actually viewable.

Kicking’ Around In My Head

I’m kind of proud of myself. Megan and Rocky came by to visit in early December and they brought my Christmas presents with them. They gave me many of my favorite New England foods that I can’t get here. I’m proud for a couple of reasons. First, even though I knew what the various items were, I didn’t touch any of them until Christmas Day. Second, I used them sparingly enough that they lasted. I still have some of the Cain’s Relish, B&M Baked Beans (my favorite variety - Bacon & Onion) and even a couple of the Kayem Natural Casing franks. The franks will be gone this week, but they were greatly appreciated; each and every one. The Maple Syrup went relatively quickly. I had waffles every day for breakfast until it was gone. Even though I was meticulously diligent in my use and I don’t think a single drop went to waste, it just didn’t last. It sure was wonderful, though.

The reason I brought this up was because I was struck this morning by an old Demon and I had a couple of the franks for breakfast. Two Kayem Natural Casing Franks with Cain’s Sweet Pickle Relish and French’s Yellow Mustard on Potato Bread rolls accompanied by a cup of Kenyan Coffee with cream. I know that it isn’t the wisest choice for a breakfast menu, but it sure tasted Heavenly. Every so often, I do something like this and I just love doing it.

I’ve started looking at the ’78 Sportster. It’s going to need a bit of work to get it up and running, but mostly, it’ll need some money thrown at it. I’m thinking that I’ll set it up like Bill had his original 78 set up. I won’t bother putting a kick starter on it, though. Bill had Guido at the shop put one on his XLH, but my ankle won’t let me kick over a Sportster, so the expense and trouble won’t be worth it. The last time I kick started a bike, I wound up sitting on the ground in serious pain while the bike sat on its side stand, idling happily. I’m going to have to find a Superglide gas tank, as well as both fenders and another seat. The seat that’s with it isn’t in the best shape. Bill loved the stock seat, and I also have a good opinion of it, so I’ll just have to keep my eyes open. If I remember correctly, the generator in it is bad, but there was a replacement generator in the saddlebags. I guess the first order of business is to see if I can get it to start and run. After that, I’ll start addressing the other issues. Maybe I can get it going early enough to ride it to some Vintage events. We’ll see.

I bought tickets to two more races, yesterday. I now have seats for the Lima 1/2 Mile and the Weedsport, NY Short Track. That’s 8 races with more to come. I’ll definitely get a ticket to the Red Mile as soon as tickets become available. I keep thinking about the Mile at the Meadowlands in October, but I don’t know if I’ll make that. I probably won’t buy a ticket for Peoria in advance. All the “Seating” there is first come, first serve since there are no seats. I’ll bring a camping chair with me when I go; last year, the ground started getting uncomfortable on the hillside I was sitting on.

I ordered a Mixture Enrichener (Choke) cable for the Roadster a couple of weeks ago. The choke won’t stay out once the bike starts and it’s a pain in the ass having to wait until the engine warms up enough to ride off whenever I go out. I called the Dealer on Friday, but it hasn’t come in yet. The Roadster hates Winter almost as much as I do.

Well; today is the Toilet Bowl; no, the Super Toilet; uh, the Super Bowl! Yeah; that it! I hope the Patriots totally embarrass the Beagles; uh, no… Eagles! I don’t really care much about feetball, but I still want the Pats to win in dominating fashion. I might even turn the game on for a few minutes. Unless the players don’t stand for the National Anthem. Then I won’t watch at all.

I also hope that we don’t get much snow and that the roads will be good enough to ride on tomorrow.

John, our friend Joe Albert's read your post today and texted me to tell you that your choke cable has a friction nut that needs to be tightened down to prevent the choke from backing off while running.Had I read the Badweb this morning you would have made me remember the first time my Superglide choke did that.I thought the damn thing was broken until they told me at the HD shop what the problem was.

Anyway, happy Super Toilet Bowl, and have a good one!

It's been getting steadily worse over the past few months. I can't tighten the plastic adjuster any more. I need a new choke cable. The last cold spell did it in. Now, unless I hold the cable out, it pulls right in. I figured a way to put a paper clip on it to hold it open, but then I have to stop once it's warmed up to take the clip off.

Once I get the new choke cable, all will be well again.
