The best mystery horror period piece movie about magicians with a psychological thriller bent I can recall.
Or some combination of the above words. Hard to do a review without a spoiler.
Let's just say, look at the cast, most of the award nominations were for costume & cinematography plus best movie best actor best science fiction etc.
Frankly it was too smart for Hollywood. Consider that Hugh Jackman got acting awards for the P.T.Barnum movie ( no doubt well done ) in a year he did Logan. Not saying he didn't deserve credit for doing a weird musical. But I enjoy storytelling. A slanted bio-pic vs. Very adult drama that in the future will define the best of the Superhero genre? In a few years a serious superhero movie review will say "A great attempt at mainstreaming the genre that fails to match the intensity of Logan or the pathos of The Phoenix Saga"
Period magician movie reviews now use The Prestige as the target missed.
Thanks a bunch, buddy! I got to see David Bowie on a double bill with Trent Reznor years ago in Atlanta, he's long been near the top of my favorite musicians. Of all his acting roles, I need to review them all. Both he and Sting worked with one of my favorite drummers, Omar Hakim... what a career.
So, back atcha- when Sting left the Police and formed the band for Dream Of The Blue Turtles, Hakim was his drummer- with Kenny Kirkland on keys, Darrel Jones on bass, Branford Marsalis on sax, Dolette McDonald and Janice Pendarvis singing. Kicking off the tour with three dates in Paris, he recorded Bring On The Night- there's a double CD set AND an award winning documentary. I've got both. The video is truly magnificent, see if you can track it down. Watching them rehearse in the castle of Napoleon's cousin is a hoot. The CD set is great too, played LOUD!
