I'm a who fan, especially the 2005 reboot/continuation of the ancient show. I personally look forward to a female Doctor.
Spoiler alert... Spoiler alert
I also loved the latest companion. The first openly gay female character on the show, the running gag that she can't get laid because the world coming to an end interrupts her was initially hilarious. Imagine your first date with a girl being interrupted by The Pope.
End Spoilers.
Although Bill was the first openly gay female companion she was preceded by Captain Jack, openly everything sexual male. I'd say bi..... but that doesn't cover it. He doesn't care if they are human as long as they say yes.. like Captain Kirk.
But brave.... ok, just following orders BBC mandatory sexuality break through aside, the New Doctor is not the first powerful female character in science fiction or tv or movies.
The works of many writers going back decades have had strong female characters. As usual Robert Heinlein was there long before with his preference for hot, redhead, omnicompetent heroes. ( like his wife, Virginia ) or EE "Doc" Smith and his hyper competent female characters. Or Tolkien and his.... although a modern feminist nut would object to the Little Mermaid plot with Arwen.
In other words. Much ado about little. From both sides.
One of the first books I remember was a biography of Thomas Edison. A hero of mine for years. It was a shock to find how slimy the guy could be.
Electrocution as a method of capital punishment was a publicity stunt campaign to discredit alternating current. From the seller of direct current equipment.
I don't like several of these choices, Videodrome, for example, but at the time it was a fresh, nightmare inducing film that stuck with me, even if I never want to see it again. Others like Inception seem like pretentious crap to me, although with great effects.
Which just goes to show that taste is taste and a movie I gush over may leave you cold.
Any opinions on this list?
I will say that 3, 4, 5, 18, 20, 21, 26, 28, 32, and of course, Bladerunner ( original cut ) are classics and I recommend them without reservation. ( yes, even Buckaroo Banzai, it's awesome in so many ways )
11, 16, 23, ( which I loved )& 30 all get honorable mention but. And the But can be severe.
17, Starship Troopers, REALLY torqued me off with it's butchery of the source material, which the Director hated. Ironically I love the parts where he's most heavy handed, and the furthest from the source material, the infomercials pushing the fascism he wrongly saw in the original... and I don't think he ever read. I really believe this is a movie made from a description of a book. Third hand.
There are a few I don't remember, or didn't see, or just didn't enjoy. ( #1 comes to mind, but that might be for personal reasons )
I've always been a fan of the Cop Buddy Movie. We've had a lack of them since the racism that made them Bold has eased. I did enjoy Alien Nation, both the film and the tv series, which substituted an Alien for the Black Cop or Asian Cop ( or in the Jackie Chan series, the Black American Cop to the Asian partner )
Orc partner? Yeah, I'm going to have to pay Netflix for this one.
Saw Justice League. Thumbs up. Not so much the dark brooding tone of the previous Man Of Steel & Batman vs Superman. Some dark & brooding but thematically justified and not dire. ( gotta have some bad vibes to get better from. )
Special effects top notch. A little monochrome compared to the Technicolor tone of Marvel movies.
Enjoyed the acting. Ben Affleck is a darn good caped crusader. Pity personal issues may take him out of role in future flicks. Gal Gadot is gorgeous and owns the role. No one sucks.
Worth a theater ticket. There is a post credit clip, but if your bladder is full go ahead once the black & white credits begin. Plenty of time as the special effects credits are lengthy. Honestly you can catch it on YouTube shortly if not already and not be too disappointed.
DO NOT LEAVE until the b&w credits begin. There is a short music & graphics credits segment ( like with Age Of Ultron ) & then a worth the wait scene. No spoilers.
Good. Better than the previous Thor Dark World. Dovetails nicely with Captain America Civil War, without needing to see the other movie. A set up film for Infinity War.
Acting? Great. Jeff Goldbloom is fun, and everyone does a decent job. Great comedic moments. Decent drama too. Loved the Dr. Strange scenes.
Special effects top notch. Overall tone is deliberately 1980's colorful. ( think early 80's zooming rainbow credits. ... just look at the trailer )
Good. Impossible to beat first movie if only because it was so surprisingly good.
But they stayed true in spirit. Gadgets & over the top villain, check. Characters you like, check. Tongue in cheek mockery of the gentleman spy genre, check. Stunts to rival a Bond film, check.
Can't & won't do spoilers. Check second run theaters if you've got the time. If not, it's worth the watch some evening when it's available. R rated for violence and brief partial nudity. Like the first one, not for small children. Watch before deciding if the kids are mature enough.

Carrie Fisher in her last performance was touching. The plot was a bit uneven. Special effects good as expected. Better. The use of real sets instead of green screen may have cost more, but worth it to the actors. They say being in a "real" set made it far easier to react and stay in character, and it shows.
Bottom line. If you're a Star Wars fan, you won't be disappointed. You might complain about major plot points or tone or whatever fans kvetch about, but you'll be glad you saw it.
If you've never seen any of the series? Go see Jumanji. Then find a rabid fan and watch the films in the order they recommend. Including the animated series. Jumping into a franchise this old is a problem.
Full disclosure. I stood in line for the first showing of A New Hope. Yeah. I'm that old. I've always considered the Star Wars series as a fairy tale with blasters. Bad science fiction. Poor dialogue. Stupid political angle religious deconstruction. And a good time.
If I wanted to suggest a Great fairy tale, see Brave. Pixar's masterpiece. Great dialogue and heroics? The Incredibles, or a Marvel movie.
But for fans..... you'll walk out awed. Maybe angry. But you'll look forward to the next one.
It wouldn't surprise me to have missed a film considered the best by you and certainly by Hollywood. I usually haven't seen the Oscar nominated movies.
If Daphne Keen doesn't get nominated for best supporting actress I won't even watch the Oscars. ( Logan )
I have hopes for A wrinkle In Time, the classic young adult/children's Sci-fi story. Will it survive the big screen and idiot politics?
Also Pacific Rim 2. Could be good, could be bad.
Alita Battle Angel. Please don't suck. Anime has a rocky history in American conversions to live action. Dragonball? Damn. Bad. Ghost In The Shell? Good.
I will of course fanboy gush over Marvel Movies, but The Xmen Dark Phoenix is THE comic book story that changed the genre. Will it work on the silver screen?
I'm not sure I'd want to see it Big Screen. I'm weird in I get odd watching combat when it gets too real. The story is very worth watching. The content is a little intense. Not really a date movie.
Date movie? Like Apocalypse Now or A Bridge Too Far?
Here's a commentary on a movie that triggered PTSD in Veterans.
As a fan/student of Cinema, some things stand out. The Rolling Hallways in Inception? Bah, done better with Fred Astaire, and 2001. CGI Zeros in Pearl Harbor? Bah, Star Wars III A New Hope did it better with models. Heck, Strike Witches on Anime tv.
Making Combat seem real yet still having a structure to tell a story, ( which is NOT the real world ) that takes real work.
1: I stood in line for the first showing of A New Hope. You stood in this line in 1981, correct? Star Wars was renamed and re-released four years after the original Star Wars came out. When I saw it 4 days after it opened on a Saturday morning with my father. It was 1977 and I was 5 years old. There weren't any real lines for Star Wars then, because it wasn't a big deal.
