Getting ready to drive from MD to FL and back. I can't get a map update for my Jeep (for some reason, Ma Mopar has decided to offer maps for "up to '13" and "'15 and later"...but NOT FOR 2014 vehicles....). No matter, I use waze anyway. But, the Jeep has a nice 8.4" screen and my iPhone 6 is relatively small, especially when driving. My question is this - can I use a spare iPhone 6S Plus that I have (no cell service, it's a spare wifi "remote control" for my concert sound system), tethered to my main phone, simply to have the larger display when driving? I have a magnet mount on the dash next to the stereo, so it's always in view...and the S+ is just a bigger screen. Easier on my old eyes. Anyone ever tether a device for Waze? | ||

I'd like to know that too. I just got an iPad that I can't do cellular on but I am thinking to tether it to my phone and I'd love to use Waze on it. | ||

If you tether (item A) to your cellular data on the phone with a plan (item B) , the item A should work identically to item B regardless of the app you use. Waze, pandora, facebook, whatever. | ||

As long as you can get it an internet connection (most likely by hotspot from your main phone), it will work, that is how I used to do it. | ||

Sure.....I've done with my wife's iPad mini (that is wifi only) tethered to my iphone a few times. We borrow a buddies old Suburban every year for a family trip. I dash mount it right in front of the old factory radio, plug the audio into his line in jack, and then stream Pandora and Waze for a good 10hrs straight. Works great Only PITA thing is it will be a major battery suck for both, so I would keep them plugged into a power source. Other than that, should work perfectly fine. | ||

Experimented on the way to work today. No tether required. The GPS in the 6+ took care of it on its own! I figured "let's try this" and turned off the wifi hotspot in my actual phone. Worked all the way to work, just like using my phone. Apparently "location services" takes care of it  | ||

Waze will route you offline fine assuming you have all the proper map data on the phone already (so do it at least once on wifi). You lose out on the realtime features like rerouting for traffic, police alerts and so on. If you plan on using it offline, you are best using a different app like Here Maps which can download entire states ahead of time to your phone storage, making it work more similar to a dedicated GPS unit. | ||

Good point on the live data - main reason I use it, especially on long trips like the one coming up - is FOR traffic and cops. Last year it probably saved me 3 hours - told me "exit here" in SC, for what I thought was no reason. Drove a parallel access road for about 19 miles...I95 was dead stopped the whole time I was breezing down that service road. I could use the larger screen for my map display, but it wouldn't "talk" through the stereo unless I set it as my primary device. Which means I'd lose the ability to make/get calls while I drive (on a 12+ hour trip, hands-free calls are GOLD to alleviate boredom!). I thought about having my regular phone also running waze, just out of sight but still making the audio link, and using the larger phone just for the display...but that's getting awfully complicated for a minor size increase... | ||

I use Waze almost every day for my commute (60 miles each way). I typically stream Pandora or podcasts and never have the Waze visual map open. I just have it running in the background with my destination set, but no audible directions. I still get all of the incident/police warnings coming through my car stereo. I also listen out for the redirecting chime sound. If I hear that, then I will reach down to pick up my phone to see what is going on and why it is attempting to reroute me. | ||

Ha ha ha!!! Made me laugh! Thinking about my commute of less than a hundred feet for the past eighteen years. If I have to redirect my route means the dog pooped on the side walk again. I hate not getting that message after dark!!  | ||

I used it last night for my 60 mile commute home (not that I don't know where that is). I put in my destination and then turned wifi off. It works about like Tom Tom but it won't talk to me in that mode. Screen is nice and big. | ||

Hear ya on that Joe - I live a mile from my shop and I get there by 9am at least half the time. It's almost always dark when I go home tho. Z |
